  • This is just a quick note to say I am very sorry for my disappearance of late. I am struggling with some health problems and it's quite difficult for me to keep track of everything.
I am trying to take notes of the suggestions for alternative models and one day will add them all, but at this moment I can't really promise when that will be.
I am very sorry for this and hope to be active again soon. Meanwhile good luck and strong nerves to all of you working on the project and many vistories to everyone playing 9th age. [Read More]
  • All the armies are now finished, at least until we get new factions like Kislev, Nippon, Estalia or Araby. Thank you for taking the journey with me and for all your support along the way. Knowing that what I'm doing is useful for people made a real difference.
I have some more topics I would like to touch upon and I will continue improving the existing lists - adding prices and hopefully more models as well, but now it's your turn to show us what YOU have. :)

Together with Marchosias, we have decided to present an alternative army competition, to let the community show what can be done and how good it can look.

    There will be two categories:

    ALTERNATIVE UNIT
    - any unit of at least minimal size according to the 9th Age rules, any manufacturer(s) except Games Workshop. Conversions are ok if most of the model qualifies - basically the rule for GW tournaments backwards :)

    ALTERNATIVE ARMY
    - a legal army (using 9th Age rules) of at least 1000 points consisting of only non-GW models. Again, conversions are ok, as long as most of each model is non-GW.

These categories will have different threads. To enter post your photo(s) in the relevant thread together with information what the models represent. Number of photos is up to you, feel free to show off.

    Unit category thread
    Army category thread

Winners will get fancy custom titles here on the forum, Hired swords sergeant for the unit category and Hired swords captain for the alternative army, at least until the next competition and maybe longer.

    COMPETITION RULES
    • One entry per person and race for the whole competition. You can participate with several entries in both categories but each entry has to be of a different race. (You can't enter an army and a unit from it at the same time)
    • Include name of the unit or army list for the army submission, we need to know what the models represent
    • The submission must be legal under 9th Age rules, WYSIWYG is encouraged but not necessary, creativity is more than welcome
    • Be considerate and nice :)
The competition starts tomorrow, on Monday 28th September and closes on Monday 12th October. A week should hopefully be enough to take a few photos. The winner will be decided by a democratic vote, which will be open from Tuesday Tuesday 13th October to Tuesday 20th October.

Voting will be based on representation of the unit(s), creativity and theme and painting skill, everyone will probably have different priorities. This is not a simple painting competition, so don't be afraid to enter - we do not expect expert level paintings, we are just curious what works for you. [Read More]
  • Another historical human army, the Empire can easily use any Landsknecht/Renaissance/30-year-war models. At the same time it has great many "big strange things" - Arcane Altars and Steel Tanks, mostly. I tried to find these as well as I could, but it's still possible at least some of these will have to be converted.

There is now a discussion thread about the models here.

    A few comments first:
    • The models listed here are not perfect and many are not on the same level as the original ones (those are usually way older than the current GW range). I am not saying losing GW models won't be a pity, if anything this work is making me appreciate them even more. I am just saying that a solution exists. The important part is, the models are out there.
    • This is not only my work. I have used ideas and suggestions from various places and am very grateful for the collective wisdom of the internet communities.
    • In many cases I was unsure about the size of the models and was forced to go on guesswork only. I hope at least some of them will work.
    • When possible, I have tried to link to groups of models and larger units, if only to show multiple sculpts at once. Most of the companies sell the individual models as well, should that be preferred.
    • I am quite a chaotic person and may have overlooked something awesome. I usually try to link sites that offer greater number of useful models or the ones I know I have not exhausted, but searching around the linked models might yield even more fruit.
    • If you know about something useful not linked here, please let me know and I will add it. This is by no means an exhaustive list and can never be, but I would like to list as many possibilities as possible.

  • Not an official GW army, but they are in the ETC list I've been using for unit lists and as the models are out there... (well, most of them, the war machines are a problem as usual)
This time I'm using Forge World as the official range (at least I think that's the closest we have) and am even more unsure about all the stuff they won't have, so if I've understood any of the units wrong, please let me know.

There is now a discussion thread about the models here.

  • As with the other elven armies, I expected the Wood Elves to be much easier than they turned out. I really like the Circle of Orboros models (they're specific, though), but the rest was mostly searching for bits and pieces and hoping to find something good enough to replace the beautiful current models.
For even more options I recommend asrai.org threads linked at the bottom of the post.

  • I expected Dark Elves to be easier than they turned out to be. I mean, how difficult can it be to find fantasy Elves? Apparently very, when you're speaking about rank and file units. Gamezone has a great-looking range, Mantic has some models and Hordes Legion of Everblight fits surprisingly well and both Raging Heroes and Avatars of War have awesome witch elves, but other than that there's fewer stuff than I would think. Raging Heroes are doing a kickstarter with a whole Dark Elf army, though, so in a year there should be more lovely choices.

  • I expected the Elves to be easy, I mean, how difficult can it be to find fantasy Elves? Apparently very, when you're speaking about rank and file units. Gamezone is great as always, Mantic is... well, cheap and West Wind is rather nice, but the rest was either luck to find a single unit (MOM Phoenix Guard, Russian Alternative and Thunderbolt Mountain elves) or desperation (Black Tree and Mirliton stuff).

  • I had originally expected Ogres to be rather specfic models out of which it would be difficult to make units, but was proven wrong. There are a few ranges that are very detailed and colourful and should make a lovely army.

  • An message rather than an alternative model list, for which I apologise. :(
The armies are almost complete, there are only three that I have not not finished and this blog is catching up fast with the Blogger one. This however means I should get super busy finishing those three if I want to maintain my one army a day routine and have less time for updating the existing lists. I am writing down all your suggestions and please keep them coming, I'll add all the models you are pointing out to me and more as soon as I can. (I already have some more links noted down and want to go once more through most of the companies - once I finish at least the basics.) [Read More]
  • The Reptilians are an army where I had more problems than I expected at first, quite the opposite from Ratmen. I knew Reaper had a ton of stuff plus there were many dinosaurs in toyshops at least, but it was hard to find much else that would fit. I have not yet found any alternatives for the Anurid High Priest and dinosaur platforms and will continue to look.

I also recommend going through the Shadowsea Draconid range , Crocodile Games Typhon and Sebeki ranges, Battlezone Lizardmen, Mirliton Lizardmen range, the Stray Ones range from Hell Dorado (if it's still possible to get those minis, look for Squamatta models) and doing a search for Reptus (or Lizardman) on Reaper website. Splintered Light Miniatures make a box of 20mm Lizardmen and Blood Dawn make =59625]15mm Lizardmen that are supposed to be rather large, both hopefully useable as skinks. Hordes Minions range have some lizard-like models that could maybe work as well. There are "real" miniature dinosaurs (such as these or these), but what I recommend the most are toy lines made by Schleich and Papo. Tabletop art are doing Lizard City bases, which fit the theme very well and with some creativity could maybe be used to build structures and platforms for the Anurid High Priest and the dinosaurs and Grendel have some Aztec/Olmec stuff in their 28mm scenery section.
