  • Sometimes even I am struck speechless by the generosity of my dwarven hosts. A few weeks ago I was offered the opportunity to examine the corpses of a band of marauders that had struck one of the trading caravans traveling from Hammerhold through te Ashen Wastes into the realms of the Ogres, to there trade fine dwarf-wrought steel for vast amounts of Auroch and Yak pelts and meat, raised by the Ogres in great number on the slopes of their great mountains.



    The creatures were apparently fast-moving slavers, striking quickly at a lightly defended part of the caravan before carrying away their victims, their mutated hindquarters enabling them to outpace any pursuers as none of them were mounted.
    The six bodies I were given to study had been felled by crossbow bolts and shotte as the dwarven escort counter-attacked. It is possible by the muttering of the caravan guards that i overheard that the creatures also had infantry support, but no bodies of such were provided to me and the dwarves were reluctant to discuss them with me.



    The bodies were badly decomposed when they arrived to Hammerhold but I have included several sketches based on the bodies, the equipment and witness-accounts from the caravan personnel to illustrate how imagine how they looked in life.


    The creatures were all large, the smallest of them twice the height of a dwarf, with the weight to match, the largest of them being the size of a Bögenhafven prize bull; a most imposing stature! I would hate the sight of such a grand creature bearing down on me, intent on my demise!


    Other than their bipedal form, they had few similarities. The two smallest of the herd were still twice the size of a dwarf, and lightly armoured, in the manner of the depraved men of the northern ice wastes, with tight-fitting helmets concealing their features. While the clime of the Ashen Wastes is very differnet form that in the north, such similarities could mean that these raiders either do war or perhaps even trade with the northmen.
    Given the position of their horns it is unlikely that the helmets can ever be removed and may indeed have been forged right on their heads! Such as act would surely mean that the creatures either possess some form of magical resistance to fire or simply and astonishing willpower and stamina to endure such pain. Surely such as act would tax even the enduring dwarves!


    Two of the other corpses were much larger, being the size of a smaller bull. They were very similar in both features and gear, possibly they were brothers, or at least part of the game grouping in whatever society these creatures live in?
    Weighting close to a thousand pounds even dead and unarmoured, they must have made exemplary linebreakers on the charge. I have a hard time imaging even a dwarven shieldwall standing up to such a creature.
    Their armour were more advanced than their smaller brethren being heavily armoured over their entire figure except for their massively muscled arms with great slabs of iron.
    Still, their protection was fairly primitive, being strapped on with leather straps instead of fitting them properly, making it clear that their gear was either looted or perhaps traded, clearly it was originally meant for someone else.

    Only the gauntlets and great, high helmets seemed to really fit them well.

    As for physical features I was much intrigued by the massive tusks sprouting from their lower jaws and contrasting with such brute features, their finely coiffed beards which even several weeks after death still smelled faintly of perfumed oil. It is clear then that despite their barbaric appearance, these were civilized creatures, not merely roving marauders.



    The next centaur-like creature also proved interesting. It was built closer to the ground that the others, with a somewhat smaller lower body and a grossly oversized, almost ogre-like upper body and unlike the previous specimens it had armour clearly made for it. Clad in a close-fitting breastplate, great black laquered pauldrons and both forelegs armoured in thick greaves and heavy bracers on both arms and wielding a great blade a fair bit longer than my own lanky form, it too must have been fearsome in life.


    The creature either fought helmetless or its helmet had been lost in battle but it too had similar tusks as the previous ones together with short, thick horns sprouting from heavy brows.

    Given the higher quality of its armour, most of which seems to have been custom-made for it, I feel that this creature must have been the leader of the band, or at the very least the second in command to the last creature.





    The least creature of the six was also the largest of them, the humanoid portion almost the size of a Ogre and the quadruped part as large as any prize bull I ever saw at a market!

  • Episode 11! Thats a year of hobby (I missed a month)! It would be great to get some feedback on this "series" if anyone actually enjoys seeing what we have done each month. Is there something you would like to see more of?

    "Mercenary" WIP. I've always wanted to do a unit of Mercenaries, but since I'm a practical being, the prospect of modelling 7-8 unique models that all have to be magnetized was a bit daunting. I do love converting, but this specific project was just something that I had to push myself into. I decided to help myself with some easy bits, that had been used by many other ogre players, and if it turns out too "ordinary", I will have a new hunter model at least!

    I have continued to work on my WotDG Pestilence project! To paint my once Chosen, I have used full Duncan's Painting Guides on Youtube, and the entire army is built around the colors he uses in those videos. My first thought was to make it a swamp theme with cliffs. However as I just bought a winter table (as you can see in the latest 9th Scroll), I decided to change the swamp to an icy lake. The Pox walkers behind the bases will be my barbarian regiment, along with some Games Workshop Nurglings. I used the same techniques for the walkers as I used for the Once Chosen. The Snails will be used as warhounds and were made from actual snail shells and goblin spider legs. I am hoping to have a game ready army for the Danish tournament Battle of Copenhagen in February.

    This month I have been really trying to clear my painting table for space. I have so many models and not so much space. I had half painted my Vampire Spawn so finished those off. They were a bit of a modelling project as I had lost 2 legs somewhere and re-positioning the models to fit the ruined building was a bit of a task! I like to add some humans that are getting eaten/killed etc to give the army a bit of character, and this was no different.

    The Bats were taking up a lot of space and only took a little time to paint. They were done using exactly the same scheme as the Vampire spawn, down to the eyes, to give coherence to the bats of the army. I also added some unfortunate humans being chased and carried off by the "Happy Bats"!

  • On Flying Skiffs and Their Mysterious Decline (Part I) (Steam Bombers)


    One of the things that so much surprised my military sponsors during their ill-fated last conflict with Hammerhold was the appearance of fast-moving light flying skiffs of precious unknown design. Their appearance allowed the normally slow dwarven forces excelelnt scouting capabilities and even some skirmishing quite on par with that offered by our own Reiter squadrons, especially when combined with accurate fire from concealed Ranger squads.



    This being one of the explicit purposes with my studies with the dwarves, I asked Queen Haephaestia for permission, as was graciously allowed to study these marvelous creations both at dock and at flight. The Hammerhold fleet consisted of two heavily armed skiffs, at least four smaller vessels, and one much larger ship, which acted as a supply ship to the rest of the fleet as well as a potent combat platform in its own right. This chapter will detail the two skiffs.
    The one depicted in the woodcut above is the "Ancestral Wrath", a swifter twin-sailed design.


    While both skiffs were unique, and indeed according to my hosts, all such vessels are, being the remnant of a lost age of dwarven splendour, they still have many similarities. All such vessels are shaped much like a shallow-keeled boat, with a prow much like a northern longboat, and are kept aloft in disregard of all known natural laws by a powerful Runic Engine on the back of vessel, which somehow provides lift much like the wings of a great beast does. Such power is unpredictable though and the skiffs are known to dip and swerve almost at random, making them quite unsafe to sail in close quarters.

    Indeed on several occasions Reiter squadrons tried to trap these swift Skiffs against the mountainside to limit their mobility, only for the mountainside to erupt in a shower of bolts as well-concealed Ranger Troupes made their presence known.



    Such a unpredictable mount requires a very special crew, and even among a folk that tolerates the weirdness of Ranger Troupes, the insane fatalism of the Seeker Sect, the insular eccentricity of the Engineer Cult, and the single-minded fanaticism of the Forgemaidens, the crew of such vessels are seen as both unhinged and dangerous and are seldom welcome in polite company.
    Having a almost instinctive understanding of the eccentricities of their runic engine, split-second reflexes and a love for speed and the open sky that is most undwarven, they tend to twitch uncontrollably and feel at ill at ease inside most smaller chambers of a Dwarfhold.


    They are also heavy drinkers, which for dwarves is saying something! Whether in the sky or on the ground.





    While primarily used for trading with cities and Holds than cannot be reached by land (all such flying vessels are technically part of the Dwarven Trading Navy, not the militia or the Queen's Army) and scouting, the skiffs can defend themselves in combat with a light grapeshot cannon(originally invented to scatter the vast Harpy hosts congregating in some mountain areas long enough for the skiffs to break through) and a large munition of bombs that can wreak great damage to lightly armoured infantry to slow to shift in response to a sudden assault dive.


    The crew are generally organized with a older, more experienced captain steering the Skiff and a junior apprentice manning the Grapeshot cannonand dropping munitions.


    The single-sailed "Flying Hammer", masted much like the longboat it so resembles, was the second skiff i was allowed the take notes off.


    It is to me a mystery why the dwarves claim to no longer have the ability to make more of such miraculous vessels, for dwarven memory and bookkeeping are both exacting and ancient (their eccentricities regarding their Queens notwithstanding) so surely such a thing would not be allowed to become lost?
    But sadly none of the dwarves I questioned would answer my questions in this regard, merely gesturing angrily at the Skiff's figureheads and making oblique references to the skills needed being lost in the "Schism".
    Interesting enough the intonation on the words used for this Schism suggests that whatever it was, it was a great rift of both physical and political/religious nature.
    However as the figureheads offer no clue to me, I have little idea as of what they mean.



    I guess time alone will tell if this lost knowledge will be reclaimed or if the remaining vessels will surely grumble as the great statues of the dwarves do

  • This months hobby progress from the Ammertime Team:

    Henry - Not much to show for this month. I have been in Mongolia for 3 weeks and organising a 100 person event. I found time to make a good start on my forest ranger conversions though :) They are built from a number of different GW kits but mostly a combination of the Shadow warrirors and leftover Wildwood ranger kits from my forest guards.



    Casimir - This month was the lead up to Giant Fanatic and as such I've been rushing to complete everything for my list. The list I started out with was quite ambitious, with a lot to be painted. In the end I didn't manage to finish a second sphinx but basically everything else was completed. I finally finished my Shabti unit which has been years in the making. Painted my second colossus, also made from a Kratos action figure, you might have seen the first one in the 3rd edition of the scroll. I added one more winged reaper to my unit and polished off my architect conversion. All in all its been a pretty hectic month.



    Lasse Giant Fanatic 2017! I planned to make an narrative army, where I only used my hero - and special points on minotaurs. The pictures show my 4 heroes! This was the list:

  • Crossbows, Rangers, and voluntary exiles.


    Much have been written on the subject of dwarven rifles, by a lot of people who know very little on the subject and thus embarass themselves with every word. Not as many words have been wasted on the dwarven crossbow. and for a very good reason.
    A crossbow is a crossbow, no matter who makes it, the dwarven one is more solid and can be used as a club with very little damage to the weapon but is otherwise identical to those used by out own regiments.



    Dwarven militias from poorer settlements or lower classes will often choose the crossbow over the rifle for simple reasons of economics, the former being much cheaper to produce and many dwarfs with woodworking skills can produce their own with ease, instead of having to commission a master gunsmith.
    Public, or Militia regiments recieve a small stipend to cover the time spent in training, but its members much buy their equipment theirselves, often leading to a very varied appearance compared to the Proffesional, or Queen's regiments, who are provided for and equipped by the queen.
    For that reason, it is very common for public regiments to have a wealthy female sponsor who provides for them in return for social capital reaped from the regiment's success.

    Crossbows also have the advantage of silence which can be vital is the more unstable regions of the under-realm, where the sharp retort of a rifle-shot may bring the ceiling crashing down or bring undue attention. As such it is also a common weapon for political assassination in those few dwarfholds unstable enough where that is a occurrence.

    With Queen Haephestia having ruled it with a gold-steel fist since time immemorial, that thankfully is not the case for Hammerhold.


    In open combat, the crossbow fulfills the same role as the rifle, allowing even a poorer settlement to unleash a withering volley of fire to support the massed regiments of heavy militia speardwarves and axedwarves. Such a combined force is usually enough to see off all but the most determined attack from anything less than a professional army, heavy armour and stout shields rendering counter fire all but impotent.

    The regiment depicted in these woodcuts is Habrik's Shafters (and yes, the Hammerhold dwarves have enough Imperial visitors to fully understand and embrace the double-meaning of their name) and their banner depicts Habrik himself, now long-dead, in the normal ancestor-worshipping manner of public regiments.



    Of far more interest is the rarer crossbow-armed style of regiments; the Rangers, and their role in society.

    Rangers dwarf a small stipends much as all public regiments do, but unlike others who are only part-time warriors, being a Ranger is not a choice to take lightly. Once the Oath of a Ranger is taken, the dwarf cannot return to any Dwarfhold for more than a single week a year as long as they adhere to the role of the Ranger, unless forced to do so by injury or illness. For that reason, a troupe must be almost entirely self-sufficient and most rangers carry all their belonging with them at all times, their crossbows and long knives being equally suited to hunting and cleaning game as they are at slitting throats.

    It should be noted that the Oath of a Ranger, unlike the Oath of the Seeker is completely completely voluntary, does not bring shame of the Rangers family, and can be renounced at any time. It is not uncommon for young dwarves who have trouble adapting to the very conservative dwarven society to spend a few years as a Ranger before settling down. Such runaways seldom stay for long. It is also seen as a good, if unusual way to see the world, as Rangers travel far and wide, both within the Dwarfhold's holdings and far beyond.



    Rangers spend all their days in the field, on the move, often under open skies, always on the move.

    For many outlying settlements owing fealty to the Queen, especially those not dwarven, a yearly visit by a Ranger troupe may well be the only contact they have with the Dwarfhold at all.

    They also provide accurate fire support for the Hold's army, skirmishing and scouting, as well as wildlife rescue in peacetimes.


    It falls to ranger troupes to patrol the Dwarfholds lands, making sure roads are safe and banditry is short-lived, either at the end of a volley of well-aimed bolts, or under the steelshod boots of a massed dwarven throng, summoned by said Rangers.




    [i]The majority of Rangers are females and most stay a Ranger for their entire life, seeing it as more of a calling and a mobile community than the martial profession it officially is.
    Rangerhood is also one of very few professions for a dwarven female that allows them to remain unmarried (the others being Seekers, Runesmiths and priests, the Forgemaiden bodyguard of the Hold's Runemistress, and a number of ceremonial titles, such as the First Hammer, First Shield).

  • Grim Blades, from the VOID

    Of the creatures that would harry our forces, the ones we titles as Grim Blades we a particular hassle. Far more numerous than the mightier Harbringers, they could not as easily be dissuaded by ranged fire but they were not as easy to drive off in close combat.

    We first came upon them when regrouping from pursuit along the shorelines, in a area where the water was strewn with strange bars and spur of golden metal protruding from the darkened waters, like the tops of a sunken city resting just out of reach beyond the shore.
    I do not know if we had strayed into their territory and it was merely a result of animalistic agression or if greater forces ordered their attack, but no more had we began to set up camp than we were set upon by this new foe.


    Consisting of a horde of scaled fishmen, they very least of them were the size of a man, but many were far more, both broader and taller with several reaching almost ogre-like stature. I will presume that those are the champions of their race as they exhibited typical dominant behaviour, harming and bulying their lessers at will.

    While the majority of the creatures wore no armour, their heavy scales were still able to resist a surprising amount of both shotte and blade and many of the larger ones wore armour made out of heavy shells dragged up from the sea floor and those could only be feller by a direct hit to the throat with shotte or a concerted effort by several soldiers in melee.


    Their weaponry was forged of the same alien, golden metal as those of the Harbringers though much less refined. Perhaps forged is not the right word, maybe scavenged is more correct? It seems like the fishmen have found metal left behind by their betters and roughly beaten it into the shape of a rough weapon, only effective because of the brute strength behind their blows.

    The weakest of their kind had little more than straight lengths of metal, crudely sharpened against rocks. But still, even the least of the fishmen were far stronger than a man and so even these crude weapons in combination with a mouth full of needle-sharp teeth would still serve them well in the chaos of a melee.


    A rare few seemed to have actual purpose-wrought weapons. I can only imagine these being forged by the Octopus-men as favours to a brave underling. Perhaps a mark of a favourite slave?


    With serried, ordered ranks of pike & shotte being the only thing keeping the Grim Blades at bay and with the risk of the pursuing Harbringers or Watchers finding us, I was once again left with no choice but to shamefully order a fighting retreat inlands, hoping to find respite further form the shore.
    As you no doubt know Inquisitor, it was not to be.

  • Hello everyone and welcome to my first blog post as a member of the content team. Hopefully some of you have seen my previous user blog, I will carry that one going but mostly just for images of completed members of the Wrath Warriors, now dubbed “The Bloodrain Tribe”. I’m going to post a lot more regularly on this blog with content other than army pictures. This will be a hobby and painting blog but I may branch out into other Ninth Age related topics, watch this space.


    So to start off I thought I would do a guide on bases and in particular how I do my bases as I get asked that a lot. So I shall reveal all my secrets, warts and all. Now I used to be of the opinion that bases shouldn’t really matter that much and the paint job on the model should be what people focus on, how wrong I was. Apparently there is a saying amongst the Pro Painters, “Base and Faces”, These are the two areas that people look at when looking at a model. Faces are a whole other nightmare that I will save for another day so I’ll talk about bases. The base is a great way of adding more to a model whether it be a mini diorama











    A chance to add more ways of showing of painting skills or to display different techniques.





    As you can tell I’m a big fan of dioramas, particularly on character bases, it’s an easy but effective way of giving a character a back story and even showing off some qualities in that character.


    I did that a lot with my Kingdom of Equitaine army but where I went completely wrong with them is that every unit is based slightly differently (there was going to be a display board that was going to help it make sense). For Kingdom of Equitaine every model shold already be different from the last as it’s the way with heraldry so to tie them together you really need some cohesive basing. Maybe one day I’ll go back to them and redo all their bases but I’m not sure I could go through that.


    For the Warriors of the Dark Gods I wanted a theme and I wanted each base to be similar to unite them but different from each other. Uniformity doesn’t really occur in nature which is the problem I have with the resin bases produced by some companies. So for the Warriors I decided to do some snow bases but also to use some water effects as I had just learnt how to use them so thought I’d put it into practice. As I was going for arctic theme I couldn’t just go with water I had to get some ice in the water as well which led me to this discovery.





    That is a Krycell Ice sheet from Precision Ice and Snow, it comes in different colours as well so you can go to town with that stuff and make some fantastic looking things. It costs about £10 and they have always thrown in some free stuff with every order as well! I use their snow effects as well and it’s good but I can’t really rate it as I haven’t used others and they have been on the bases for a year now and it hasn’t yellowed yet (a common problem with baking soda apparently).

    Here is a list of what you will need to replicate the bases of my Warriors:

    • Krycell Ice Sheet
    • Snow Effects
    • Milliput
    • Slate rocks
    • PVA glue
    • Sand
    • Paints for base
    • Super glue
    • Acetate/OHP sheets
    • Waterproof tape (Parafilm or Plumbing Sealing Tape)
    • Sandpaper of various grades (80 – 3000 but can go as low as 1000 if needs be)
    • Gloss varnish
    • Hairspray (if required)
    So starting off with the base, it’s just a bit of MDF that I get from Sarissa Precision, I drill a 6mm hole in the centre and then put a 6mm neodymium magnet in the hole with a bit of superglue. I do this just for transporting purposes as I have a big plastic box with some steel sheet in the bottom, it makes it much easier to move my army around as they are all magnetised to the bottom. This is completely optional and I just find this the easiest way. I will do a guide on magnetising your bases another time.


    Next it’s time to create the base, I use Milliput to create the base, it’s fun and mess. As the base is going to be half sea and half land I create a gradual incline to represent a beach. I then add some rocks by using some small slate rocks I bought off eBay. All of this bit is completely up to you how you do it, there is no set rule. The only important part is to make sure the edges, particularly where the water will meet the land, are flush with the edge of the base (the reason will become clear later on). If the Milliput goes over the edge of the base that is fine, it will all be sanded down to make it smooth anyway.





    Position your model on the base whilst it’s still malleable to ensure the model will fit on and to make sure that the model will be flat on the base at the end of the process. I have often made the base and then it ends up the model is balancing by one toe rather than a whole foot! I always pin my models to their bases, so if you are like me you’ll also want a foot to be over some of the Milliput rather than a rock so you can drill into it with a pin vice.
