  • So just a quick one, as I've been a bit caught up with things and have a tourney next weekend that i'm prepping for so haven't had much time to crack on with this as much as i'd have liked to (tsch family and other hobbies tsch!). But still some progress has been made so here we go. Overarching aim for most of this is to create things that are tabletop standard (or at least appear to be) and that don't require you to go out and spend the big bucks!

    First we start off with the Terrain building. A tutorial will follow so wont go into too much detail now, but here are some pics for your viewing pleasure.

  • Hey guys, so after the slog of painting (which i'm not quite finished with yet lol) I turn my concentrations to the background of my story and characters and really look to establish the von Hesselinks into the campaign.

    Interestingly these characters are based on some private fluff that @PTG - Hyper-G and I wrote a long time ago waaaay back in 2009!! This was when we were just 2 young boys getting into the world of toy soldiers and playing small skirmish games complete with narrative battles and stories to go along with them. As such I actually had a wealth of characters to choose from and over the years the characters evolved to go along with the models and units i picked. Still, I never had a real reason to continue their fluff until now and how I have enjoyed getting them out of the figurative closet!

    So, we focus on the leader, his lover and their necromancer helper and their journey to Avras to help the Vampire Queen Fontaine in defending her throne. think of these as Origins stories. Enjoy!

  • Just as I thought after the first box of their models, Raging Heroes is ruling the roost when it comes to female combat models. Even more so when it comes to their cavalry models. As I mention in the video above, these are for gaming and in thus I made it easier on myself when it comes to colors, because more than likely I am going to break these atleast once while on the gaming table. But as you can see below:
    They can be even more complicated when it comes to colors and layers. The biggest thing about these models is that they do not rank up as well as other cavalry models due to how they are supposed to be posed, and the range of their poses. So it is IMPERATIVE that you plan ahead by a few feet in order to make sure the unit looks cohesive and doesn't look too cluttered, I even have mine numbered on the bottom. For my vampire knights I even went as far as to have raven unit fillers so they have room to breath, something I wish I had the forethought on when doing my earlier grail knights. But, thats why I am here.

  • Hello folks! I am happy to say I have (finally) finished some of the models I have been painting for the Avras campaign! Got a character and 3 units all done at the same time so think its best to show it all off! Now there are some things moving forward that I may add/tweak to the models so I can't say they are 100% done and never to be touched again - especially as VC seem to be my next main tourney army I will be using (spoiler alert) quite soon in the future - but for the purposes of the campaign I can consider them complete.

    Anyway, let's get straight to it!

    I quite the the colour scheme and how the pink has come out, although it's not as clean as i would have liked. I think this comes down to using my old paints rather than getting new ones, but also because i tried a lot of 'trial & error' colour combinations and techniques. First I tried out just making her dress white with a red wash to creat the pink, but that came out too similar to the red of her breastplate so took that off and tried to mix colours to create the shade i liked. Havent ever done mixing before so i'm pleased with the outcome, but becuase of all the messing around with the actual model i feel its not as smooth as i could have made it. Similarly, the face is the first time I have looked at getting proper details out of it and 'trusting' my painting skills on it. As a result it looks a bit blotchy and a bit 'cartoony' (as normally i would put faint colours in the areas i need detail and then do a wash to cover over the cracks) but its not terrible so i'll take it. The eyes were hard to do and ended up doing them several times before I was 'happy'. I imagine she will be constantly tampered with as I go on, but this is as good as it gets for now!     Pleased with these because when i put them next to my other 20 ghouls they look pretty similar and can easily make 1 big block by mixing the two in. Used the same techniques but did a little more detail on these, and picked out the rope and metal more than the previous 20. The only thing I would do with these is add some detail to the mouths and give them a wash to darken them up - but i will need to look at the whole group to see how best to do that, so once again for now they are complete!


    Pleased with these and the only alteration/addition for these will be adding a wash to the bases. Otherwise I think they came out quite nicely and are near identical to the last ones I've done which will help when adding them to future armies!

    Vampire Spawn

    Will not likely change these at all now so this really is the finished article for these boys. I have some regrets as I believe I was a bit heavy on the white dry brushing but as is the trend it appears, they look like my previous 3 i had done and painted up so now make a nice looking unit!

    I will leave it there for now. Still to paint are 20 zombies and 5 barrow knights who are in the early stages so need a few more sessions before i can get anywhere near complete, but they will come in time! There is 3 months after-all before the campaign is complete so plenty of chances to get them involved at a later date. In my final stages for my last character fluff too so will be hoping to update you all early next week on the characters and the start of their journey back to Avras! Oh i'm so excited! [Read More]
  • Lets be fair here: The Games Workshop snake ladies from back in the day were super weird. They had multiple slaanesh boobies, they were modeled by what appeared to be a man 6 beers in.. they just didnt look good. I was happy to see Games workshop remade some new snake ladies, but at 50 bucks a box and some rather boring sculpts, I wasnt into it. I really wanted to run a Medusa heavy Dark Elf list in the future, and about rocketed out of my chair when I saw some pre-sculpts from Raging Heroes. Feminine snake Ladies? In my Corsair loving home? Oh yes... yes please:

    I still cant get over how cute they are. Despite being mono-poseish, they are still extremely dynamic poses that make a lot of sense and really capture some snakey movement. Additionally, they really went traditional on the forge, where there are a lot less pieces to put together and really improves on a lot of issues I had in the past where I had to glue the faces onto the heads. Putting them together was a dream... cleaning the flash and the brushing was a bit of a nightmare when you're trying to get their snakey coils clean and make sure the soap gets into all the nooks and crannies so there is no chance of paint flaking away. Speaking of flaking, there is very little flex to these models, which has been a nightmare when it comes to the Angels. While beautiful models, they are fragile and flexable. These are stout as hell, and its a breather.

    That being said, I really wish that the tops of the snake bodies had more scale to them. Its more like a Wyrm with flexable, more skin like scales, and kinda takes a little bit away from the fun of painting them. Some nice thick scales would have been appreciated in the task of painting some fun scale patterns...but we cant have everything we want, now can we? However im just glad to have a snake lady model that doesn't look like the beer googles have worn off...
