  • I think @Wesser has an important point. He didn't say that SE are fine and don't need changes, he said that minor price tweaks won't fix the real problems with SE, and dropping prices all over the place to try and fix something which isn't a pricing problem is just likely to create other problems, and hurt us more in the long run. If we suddenly become OP in every match where the enemy DOESN'T have pyromancy or whatever, and reaonably matched against people who do have pyromancy, it's just going…

  • Quote from AlexCat: “And now you can effectively threaten him both at range and in combat with many of your units.Currently Elk lord for 550-600 pts zones out 1100 pts dragon because Dragon fears his charge. This situation you call balanced.” No, now we only threaten it in combat unless we have Divination, you are proposing reducing that to just divination. Quote from AlexCat: “I made my life much easier and only went through ETC lists, taking into account only strong teams:- austria has 10 arch…

  • Quote from AlexCat: “I dunno what you're talking about. 18 Sentinels do 2 hp to AD each turn. Is it rare to find them in modern SE lists? ” Actually, I'm in the process of (slowly) working through an enormous stack of SE tournament lists, specifically looking at shooting. So far (and I admit I've still got a lot of lists to get through, so this could change) 15 or more sentinels are present in less than a third of lists, and when they are, there is often no other serious shooting (ie less than 1…

  • Quote from AlexCat: “I didnt know the answer. I also didnt realise that "we cant deal with R7 AD" from a diva/poison/mass light AP1 shooting army would sound so familiar. ” SE don't have the massed bowfire to kill an AD. Considering the cap of 55 bows, and that even 40+ bows seems to be pretty rare in SE lists, the SE player will be doing well if he causes 2 wounds per turn with shooting, so even without taking the Hereditary into account, we're talking about the SE player devoting all of his sh…

  • Quote from AlexCat: “I'm having a strange feeling of dejavu. ” well, if you knew the answer, why did you ask? R7 isn't automatically problematic. But when it's on a fast, flying monster which can avoid most things which can face it in combat, fly over redirectors, and pick combats with stuff which can't really hurt it, any list which doesn't have cannons or the right magic path is going to be in a lot of trouble, while any cannons are still the bane of its existence. Pretty much the definition o…

  • Quote from AlexCat: “Quote: “Again - as far as Im concerned you Can buff it as much as you want as long as every army has decent counterplay. Res7/Fly leaves several armies with extremely little that Can hurt let alone kill it ” Like for example? ” Ooh, I know this one! SE. Nothing in the army has higher than S5 apart from characters, tree father and our own dragon. Tree father is too slow, SE dragon is weaker than AD, only realistic chance of killing an R7 AD would be elk prince with titanic mi…

CariadocThorne - - Sylvan Elves (SE)

    Post

Hi guys, please take a look at this survey, your input is much appreciated. the-ninth-age.com/community/ne…and-their-casters-survey/

  • On the subject of representing quality armour, there was an idea posted in the HBE thread recently,(I think it might have been by @DanT?) suggesting something along the lines of Elven armour giving +1AP against attacks below S5 or something. I think something along those lines might be great for both HBE and DE (SE likely focus more on making their armour light and flexible than strong, so shouldn't have it).

  • Quote from Kapten Kluns: “Quote from CariadocThorne: “For the record, my prefered "Elf rule" would be something more along the lines of: During first round of combat, reroll 1's to hit, enemy rerolls 6's to hit. Cover is applied as MR when targeted by damage dealing spells. GW wielding Elf elites would then get additional attention, such as LionGuard maybe getting flat 3+ AS, SM getting Lightning Reflexes but losing the extra +1 to hit rule, Forest Guard getting S4 and Halberds (net result of -1…

  • Quote from Cealyne: “I think the designs of SE spears and HBE spears should be switched. SE live more of a tribal setting and the soldiers should be citizens that defend the tribe and borders. Hunters that come together to defend their land. Not a professional soldier. HBE live more of militaristic life. They have a powerful navy and should have an equally powerful army of professional soldiers. Am I solo in this belief? ” Why? HE already have professional military units, the CS aren't one of th…

  • Quote from Kapten Kluns: “Quote from CariadocThorne: “You think we enjoy wounding on 5+ while being wounded on 3+ or 2+? Why should other armies hitting and being hit on the same numbers be a problem? ” Is this a problem for you then I guess it is a problem about the elven core units? Because elfs have a lot of options with better to wound chances than an on avarage of 5+.Dont think I have to insert what those picks are. The problem arises when you meet some tasty blender elf that will be hit on…

  • Quote from Phaeoron: “Elves become lame if they can do every single thing better than anyone. Kryptonian elves make sense in Tolkiens works because in his mythos older means more powerful, but in a setting like ours where elves are a more everyday kinda folk, they absolutely need to be bad at something to be relatable. IMO of course. Elves are reluctant to wage wars precisely because they like things to stay as they are, including themselves continually breathing. In duels, the elvish agility an…

  • Quote from Shako: “This make me think theres a huge discrepancy between what an elf should feel like and what's good for the game.In movies/books, which are mostly written out of the perspective of humans/alike, elves come over as godlike creatures. Legolas evading I don't know how many goblin shots and easily killing 100 of them by himself. Living (in some cases only nearly) forever, master craftmanship, master with the blade and bow and commonly magic abilities. Does it feel off that elves are…

  • Quote from Phaeoron: “For me personally lightning reflexes works as it should. Let an elf close, and you'll be sorry. I've bern on the wrong end of the stick many times, but this is how an elf should should work. Hit elf, they die. Alloe elf within spears' reach... Oh, honey... Some tools against mass auto hits/area attacks could well be needed to mitigate RPS in matchups, but in essence an elf is all about: hit them first and hit them where it hurts. You can't take the counterpunch. ” I can't h…

  • @ninepaces hard target isn't the answer. Firstly some units already have it, what do they get? Secondly, it just leaves elves even more RPS vs anything which doesn't suffer to-hit penalties, like pyromancy or UD shooting. Maybe DE and HE still suffer excessively from regular shooting, but SE have tools to deal with it, yet the single biggest issue with the army by far is how vulnerable they are to dpell damage, UD shooting and other ranged damage which ignores to-hit modifiers.

  • Quote from DanT: “ I would be wary of making arguments based on deprecated old guidelines that no-one liked (And I suspect that you if you dig into it in detail, you will find that avoiding hits meant "avoid the things that have to try to hit")” That was specifically in reference to what "avoiding hits" SE have access to in the current book which was designed based on those guidelines. While I certainly expect our guidelines will be different when LAB time comes, I honestly don't see how avoidin…

  • Quote from WastelandWarrior: “well, autohits autohit everyone, not just elves (elves may take more damage from them due to low res etc. but thats a different thing) If avoiding hits from all sources is supposed to be an elven trait then the designers have failed badly. As far as I'm aware SE have the spear of distracting and that's it. None of the units have paid points into being distracting have they? Magic is grotesque against elves though, I won't try and deny that. No idea how to fix it tho…

  • Quote from WastelandWarrior: “Quote from CariadocThorne: “If attacks which ignored armour or resilience were as common as attacks which ignore to-hit modifiers armies which rely on those would struggle just as much ” no confirmation bias at play here at all..... AP everywhere, poison, lethal strike (won't mention magic as it has a workaround for everything) easily as present as impact hits, grinds and stomps.... or is that my bias showing ” See, people complain about the amount of AP everywhere …

  • Quote from Fnarrr: “Quote from Phaeoron: “But forces you to take trees ” Conceptual question: clearly a mix between elves and trees is and should be a thing. But then: - should tree-only armies be a thing? - should elf-only armies be a thing? I'm asking because a "yes" for both of those means there will be some overlapping functionality between the two, like with dryads and spears. And I think that makes a very difficult situation to balance if all 3 play styles are to be on a roughly equivalent…

  • Quote from Fnarrr: “Fair - I went for the MR, because soft cover already gimps standard shooting. ” I've proposed something similar, but gaining MR any time the unit would have cover against a normal shooting attack from the caster. I think it gives just enough of a boost to help against being blasted of the table by pyromancy etc, but requires thought on the SE player's part to use, rather than being "always on".
