  • Seventh Age, as per the world hymn. There was no information on the Barren Mountains during my read-through of all 9th Scrolls late last year. I've yet to catch up since then. As for Barren Mountains as a transition border zone between DH and ID; it's a good idea, in the absence of known stuff at the moment. Geographically, any Dwarven cities there could easily be based on Hittites or Armenians, both with solid mountainous building records. Both have ancient roots (Urartu in the Armenian case), …

The prequels are a great story told poorly. The sequels have no story to speak of; they're a narrative opportunity squandered, and are all about rehashing the original trilogy incompetently. The prequels are very flawed, but still build on the overarching story and offer memorable moments. The sequels break the overarching story. Star Wars is a space opera for 12 year olds: I don't have high expectations on the story, other than it being coherent and dramatic. The prequels meet those criteria, a…

In Defiance of Fate A man, a will, unwilling. Unwilling to accept the destiny of life, the shared demise of stars. Willing to sacrifice all to deny death, our greatest waste, the opened scars. Unwilling to stand idly by his love, as she would die. Willing that forbidden union, to lay them low, at end of lie. A friend, a hand, no weakness. Greatest friend with fiercest heart, born to save those near. No comrade may be left behind, no consort ever perish, a hero without fear. Greatest warrior ever…

  • Quote from Giladis: “T9A Dwarves are different from WHFB ones. The names of people and settlements should give you insight into some of our inspiration alongside early modern fantasy origins ” Mayhap Swiss, Austrian and Transylvanian in the White Mountains, and maybe with pikes, royal marriage spree and full-bearded Vlad the Impaler respectively? At any rate you can still get some mileage out of antiquity-based doodles for predecessor Dwarf cultures of ancient Ages if you like, depending on how …

  • @xaby86: Think locally, or rather regionally: At a guess, Dwarven Holds in Vetia are likely to be based on Celts (and perhaps some Holds based on other continental European ancient cultures), while Jotun Peaks/Åskland are likely to be Nordic based (perhaps Slavic in eastern Jotun Peaks). Meanwhile, Kegiz Gavem may sport a central role in (ancient?) Dwarven history, perhaps as an original mother Hold, capital or whatever, meaning much of the detailed brainstorming here is likely to be incompatibl…

On y va! Si…

  • As an addendum, basing the world map on real Earth also give surprising worldbuilding potential in detail beyond geography. Human history is an immensely wealthy source of inspiration. I've drawn maps of fictive worlds from a very early age (8-9), yet the ploy of modelling it closely on the real world map never occurred to me; it would have seemed redundant, too simple and a wasted creative opportunity. Yet over time I've come to realize that this approach (also chosen by Warhammer Fantasy, beca…

  • Tjubgob Outrider Partatua Marrowsucker jounced upon the back of Chickenwing, his tall Bak-Kak-Ku mount. The giant avian ate the distance in long leaps. Mount and rider darted over a dusty hillock strewn with bushes and cedar trees. Cedar forests flourished this close to the coast down south. The scrawny Tjubgob gleefully noted that the south end of the hillock had been the place of a slave logging camp before enemies had struck, burning and slaying. Mangled corpses of shackled Humans and Goblins…

  • Miles Gloriosus

Here is a short clip from the movie A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1966): Entry of Miles Gloriosus (also on repeat) It's a perfectly played vainglorious braggart soldier stock character from ancient Roman comedy. Enjoy.

  • Besides, this tale rhymes well with the Swedish proverb "advokater och soldater är djävulens lekkamrater": "Lawyers and soldiers are the Devil's playmates."

  • @JimMorr A laidback outlook with few expectations tend to work out: One laughs at the good jokes, don't much mind writing choices one disagree with, and gets pleasantly surprised when background ramps up to high quality and epic moments. I'm actually starting to recommend T9A background to certain choice Oldhammer players now that it is pulling clever tricks, references and puns. In a way this isn't too dissimilar from Warhammer background, which also was loaded with jokes, references and puns. …

  • Reading the new Epic of Kibotesh gave an idea: Would it be possible to pull together some volunteers with equipment to record readings of T9A background pieces and put them on Youtube? As a small Librivox-style initiative. I've always devoured books, and still do when I can find the time. Yet a much more preoccupied life means I nowadays mostly get to listen to audiobooks while working with other things (one of the perks of sculpting and sorting castings). Most people can probably relate, e.g. l…

  • Regarding the Epic of Kibotesh: Lovely parody of the epic of Gilgamesh and Inanna's descent into the underworld! Wonderful cover design. It's good to see the Ninth Age background grow and find its own voice in the humour department. The story flipped into bonkers mode when they conned Sezurut out of his head. Good! I sympathize with Gantar's fury against the paragraph rider Lugar. The epic is like an unholy crossbreed of Mesopotamian myths and their endless legal documents. A great read and a lo…

  • That is fair. Thank you for all your helpful hard work and goodwill. Mainstream reach would be optimal (and you've certainly had eyes on the ball here), but I hope whatever paths are chosen work out for the project. I just hope you found some enjoyment and positive experience in your endeavours, and not just disappointment. Take care, and best of luck!

  • Keep at it! Once the tournament scene re-emerges from the pestilential tide you'll hopefully sport a surprise to stun people with. Brown sand with bone white-beige gravel/stones and a random mix of grasses, tufts and modelling flower patches should complement the colour scheme here. Alternatively, getting ahold of some GW skull kits and sprinkling the bases with them could replace the beige gravel/stones in this proposal.
