MARK THE DATE!
WTC OPEN 2020
5 Games, Teams of 5
Stay tuned - more informations coming soon!
@Stunt - can some mod maybe put all the content from this thread into some archive i have access to?
I´d like to keep this thread for WTC 2020, because the relevant group of players has subscribed to this thread and i´d love to not set up a new one by losing all these guys attention
SEE YOU ALL IN AMSTERDAM BTW
we tried our best to serve all needs and picked a date that does not clash with many other events and most important: a date that was available
I´d love to get everyone on board with the plans we made, but as we all know: it is impossible
We are working on the reader and homepage while clarifying the last details - we are positive that tickets for the event will be available soon!
Since we just announced time and place for WTC 2020 i´d like to take the time to add some words as a rationale WHY we took "Amsterdam, 2 days, 5 games".
The easy answer would have been: the polls we set up turned out in favour of these three combined options after we put together the combined voted from FB and the T9A forum.
In fact there is way more of a thinking process behind it.
It was a truely rough decision for us to make to let Herford as THE place to be for WTC down. The rationale why especially i myself had to get myself comfortable with a new place and venue i gave some while ago here in detail and do not want to repeat it. Just in short: the size of the volunteer-team behind WTC decreased, while we the size of the event incereased significantly. Without more guys leaving or burning out we would not have been able to keep WTC alive as it was.
Fortunately we can now act as a team with our friends from Alliance Open and due to the comfort the Hotel Schiphol offers all this takes away a lot of stress and work from my shoulders to go back and focus on doing proper communication and being the "caretaker" of the event and all the contacts and friends i made while WTC was growing - it feels like a block of concrete was cut from my feet while before i was constantly to keep my head above water
Main reason in the end why we went with Amsterdam for sure was: we are 100% sold by using the Hotel Schiphol as out venue the WTC will increase it´s quality significantly. And it will be able to survive and sustain!
Give it a try, although it might mean you have to spend some more hours in a car or you have to pay a bit more for taking a flight - we will make sure it will be worth it!
2days vs 3days: the vote was literally 50:50 in the end and thus we had to take into account all the mails and feedbacks via PM to take a final decision. We fully get that many players that take a long trip would love to play one more day to make it feel "worth it". Still for many occupational groups it is impossible to take a day off from work (teachers for example) and when we were looking into the jobs of the friends we made over time we figured out that this group is definitely not insignificant. Many of these guys are the driving forces behind their teams even and we had doubts that without these guys some teams would not make it to WTC at all. Given that for the dates we were looking for the hotel was only able to offer to us Saturday to Monday events for 3 days, while we wanted to go with Friday to Sunday and the fact that we want to enable access to WTC for everyone, we wen with 2 days in the end. One more thought that went into the decision-making process was, that we assume most guys who would come for 3 days would come for 2 days as well .... but not the other way round. Given everybody who likes to stay more than 2 days can easiely have really nice holidays in Amsterdam we felt like there is not much to lose.
5 Games: well, we of course know that more games with the amount of teams we are expecting to come to WTC will determine a much more clear winner and that taking a long flight for one weekend with 5 games only is not ideal. Still we had very strong feedback on only doing 5 games (and a clear majority on the vote). The main reasons were:
- flights back on sunday evening are easiely doable due to the airport being next to the venue and these flights are cheaper then the ones on monday usually.
- Since 3 games on Saturday will take a lot of time at least on the Sunday we want to give players the opportunity to visit Amsterdam´s city center before they leave.
- Players that come to the event by car and want to take a long drive back to be at work early on Monday will manage to be back home early enough.
Finally some words regarding the final date:
WTC used to be in April the week before or after Easter (especially due to school holidays to make sure the team can take days off at work to get everything set up). EML events made plans around this and we apologize when some TO has trouble because we moved into may. Good thing for us with May is, that April was usually overcrowded with ETC-related qualifiers and the French scene for example was kind of excluded due to their qualifier-events. We hope with the new date we will have the French teams on board again that once participated the TG PLAY!-Events :). Our preferred date would have been the first weekend of May (1st of May is a holiday in some countries), but the hotel already had a wedding booked. So we were kind of forced to pick the closest date to 1st of May to make sure we do not get closer to ETC with our event and to not conflict with the other big EML-events like Cracow etc too much.
We honestly gave all this a lot of thoughts and unfortunately we are aware that there is no way to make everyone happy in the end .... it is simply impossible given the stunning amount of players WTC has and had so far. Compromises have to be made, but in the end the most important thing is, that WTC will live on and that the team feels very comfortable with how WTC 2020 will improve comared to the events we had so far.
Give it a try, we promiose from the bottom of our hearts, that we will do our very best to make the WTC even better then the years before
P.S.: of course including hand-luggage-friendly trophies @Furion
Is it possible to come to the tournament without booking the food?
As stated several times before:
The food is what pays the venue. We pay 0€ for the hall itself, but the condition is that the participants pay the buffet-lunch.
The entry fee we are atm working on. It will be less then 100€ per person, so not as bad as initially expected btw.
Really looking forward to this event for next year. Very glad you guys are going to make it happen!
due to a decision of the Formula 1 to have the May Grand-Prix only 10km away from the Hotel WTC is going to happen in Zanvoort (Netherlands) on the first weekend of May, we just have been made aware that all rooms on the WTC weekend will be reserved for the F1 (although we reserved the majority of rooms for our event already).
The F1 is a major economic factor for the region and as such wargamers simply do not count as much as the F1 for the region.
Consequences: we have to change the date for WTC 2020 slightly.
We wholeheartedly apologize for this unfortunate event and hope none of you will have to drop or any other TO will be in trouble now :/.
To settle on an alternative date the hotel offered us either 25.-26. April or 16.-17. May 2020.
To make sure we at least pick the date which is liked by the majority of our players we will have a poll on the date. We as TO´s prefer the date in May and in case of a close to 50:50 we will go with that. If there is a clear mandate for April, we will of course go with that :).
The poll will end this friday at lunch (12:00 CET).
We made our case clear to the hotel btw to make sure no such faux-pas will happen again any day soon.
See you in Amsterdam and let´s not take this as a bad omen plz ;).
Bad news for 2-3 Norwegian teams as our constitution day is May 17 - a big, traditional family day.
So we will vote April !ETC 2013: Team Norway player - Dark Elves
Summer of 2014: 1st time dad
ESC 2015: Dark Elves, 15th place
ETC 2016: Team Norway captain - Empire of Sonnstahl
ETC 2017: Team Norway captain - Vampire Covenant
Summer of 2018: 2nd time dad
2019: TEC and PTC Warriors of the Dark gods
Following my battle reports on Facebook: @Gray Fox
As Grayfox said, 17th of May is more or less synonimous with "family and friends day". And IF you are fortunate to have enough wife-points to travel, half the country will be "going home" that weekend - so travelling will be pure hell. Looks like we will have 3, potentially 4 teams this year, but I'm fairly sure that number will be 0 if the date is set to 16-17/5
I pressed wrong button
My voice for May
