  • New Heroes - What ideas do you have?

Okay, lets have a little exercise here :)

I know what you are thinking...

Don't we have enough hero choices, and shouldn't we fix the Cairn Wraith and the Von Karnsteins before coming up with new stuff?

Perhaps so, but while the Vampire bloodlines are ofc the focus of the book I've long felt the other hero choices were in a dull state. The Necromancer is fine, but the Barrow King is somewhat bland (but people at least play him even if only one build), the Cairn Wraith is completely redundant and the Banshee feels like a unit rather than character.

For a character-driven army I think we could really use a bit of fresh air, so what are your ideas? Who knows, maybe the eventual LAB teams will pick up some of them (i'll be sure to make the right people aware at least).

    For starters here's my idea:

    The Coven Member
I've had a problem with the disconnect from humanity in the Vampire books since 7th, as Vampires are essentially just monsters. Where are the swains (those addicted to the blood kiss or the lure of immortality), the dupes (peasants who haven't noticed longevity of their lord) and so forth? Vampires can't exist without their cattle after all

So I've created a cheap support character, who bring some humanity into the project. I have vague ideas for each Bloodline to affect Coven Members slightly (such as Nosferatu being able to cast Hereditary basic version through an Acolyte for example), but maybe that's too complex

    Points idea: 120

    Adv March DI Rea
    4 8 7 0
    OWS STR AP Agi Attacks
    3 3 1 4 2
    HP DWS Res
    3 3 4

May take magical items up 100 points

    Must be upgraded to either:

Swain (even the noblest may be lured to the side of a Vampire – to serve as an admiring bodyguard, or perhaps a ready source of nourishing blood):
Gains +2OWS, +2 DWS, +1STR, +1 AP, heavy armour and shield. Before making rolls for Vampiric you may have the Swain lose 1 HP with no saves of any kind allowed. One model with Vampiric in the unit gains +3 to the Vampiric Roll

Acolyte (Some Coven Members receive rudimentary training, enough to direct the shambling hordes of Undeath on the battlefield):
Model gains Channel (1) and any Core unit it joins gains Autonomous.

Dreg (The dregs of humanity sometimes find dubious succor under the wings of a vampire, and despite their pathetic state, they go where a Vampire cannot):
Before the battle choose an enemy unit. For the first D3 turns that unit counts as being under the effect of Evil Eye (Attribute of Witchcraft Lore)
  • I would mostly want to see new units or options that correspond to options available on the market. Mantic has scarecrows now and Fireforge Games will have armored zombies. There is a lot more these days than what we started with, time to update.

Brotherhood of the Dragon only, dragon priest: This is a specialist at healing vampires only within 6" (vampiric). To do so he must get fresh blood/life essence from combat, so he will have to be on the front lines. The priest should have an altar like chariot/construct (to buff stats) that must be protected. If it gets destroyed all vampires within 8" suffer some kind of side effect such as -1 Att for 1 turn.

Von Karnstein only, werewolf: this hero turns slain enemies into lesser werewolves. Werewolves count as scoring units if they can amass more than 10 of them. The lesser werewolves struggle with their new life and must take a Dis test each turn to stay or run.

Lamia only, enslaved bodyguard: point limit of say 200. The vampire enslaves an opposing hero to protect her in this battle. Roll a D6 to test every round to see if the hero breaks the skill. The vampire may drain the body guard of 1 HP to gain 1 HP. If the hero breaks the spell, then it is in a unique position to attack the vampire with a bloody rage

Strigoi only, scarecrows: replace the rules for a terrain piece with "cornfield" (Lands of the 9th Age terrain supplement).
Stat wise I would go with a zombie on a stick, so movement 0. It's only goal is to transform the battlefield and force the opponent to deal with removing them.
When not removed, the scarecrow occupied terrain generates a unit of 10 scarecrows in turn 5, this unit has scoring.

Nosferatu only, pathologist: a collaborator for money helping a Necromancer or vampire hunting for knowledge (if they pay well enough), this character can only join zombie units and buys them upgrades. The buffs should turn zombies into true anvils, so more Res or make them explode from being stitched up properly while gasses within ferment.

  • Honestly, the normal people undead are well covered, and unless we get some peasant militia/ living thralls, we won’t exactly see many living character options in our roster. But more things can be undead than just humans, and that inclusion is sorely lacking in our character selection. So, in this vein (pun definitely intended) I’d like to see some of the following things:

    Undying Khan
    Undying Khan (370-410 points)
Single model, Large infantry, 40x40 base
    UniversalAdvMarchDisReaTraits
    5”10”81Undead, Ashes to Ashes, Fearless
    DefenseHPDWSResArm
    5450Heavy armor, Fortitude (5+)
    OffenseAttOWSStrAPAgi
    54522Battle Focus

Caller of the Feast: At the end of the combat phase, roll a d6 for every wound caused by this model. On a roll of 4+, this model's unit raises 1 wound. Characters may not raise wounds in this manner.

Mantle of Undeath: R&F models in a unit with at least one model with this special rule gain a Fortitude (6+) save, or increase their Fortitude save by +1 if they had one (to a maximum of 4+).

Sacrificial Bodies: When allocating attacks from shooting or magic, all R&F models in this character’s unit must be allocated at least 1 attack before any may be directed at this character.

    Options:
    • May take magic items (up to 100)
    • May gain Vampiric (6+) (40 points)
    • If vampiric, may take one non-ancient bloodline power. Cannot join a bloodline. (no limit)

    Weapon options:
    • Paired Weapons (10 points)
    • Halberd (15 points)
    • Great Weapon (25 points)

Unit purpose: To be an option that can keep our units from crumbling into dust without being a spellcasting necromancer or an 800 point vampire with 1 weapon enhancement. Being big, it’s easier to attack in close-combat. Being just as tough and strong as the vampires, it’s not too vulnerable, but it could still be taken down without too much risk given the wide profile and basic 5+/5++ that works as his full base-kit protection.

Sacrificial bodies is there to protect your big fatty from enemy shooting even when deployed in smaller units so that you can place him in more than just Ghast bricks.

The 6+ vampiric option is there because, well, vampirism can afflict any member of any race, right? So let’s get some ogre vampires and such in here! This can make the model notably more expensive if they also include a bloodline power, but the model is unable to join a bloodline themselves. Effectively, they are vampires, but outside of the vampiric houses that humans have set up. They are khans, not some pompous nobles and their ilk.

    Eternal
A bigger version of ethereal undead that functions as a spellcaster and either deploys on its own or within a unit of SPIRIT HOSTS in order to give our swarmy bois some relevancy.

Eternal (290 points) (Counts towards Tormented Souls)
Single Model, Large Infantry, 40x40 base
    UniversalAdvMarchDisReaTraits
6”12”81Ashes to Ashes, Autonomous, Fearless, Ghost Walk, Undead, Wizard Apprentice
    DefenseHPDWSResArm
    4640Aegis (3+, 5+ vs Magical attacks)
    OffenseAttOWSStrAPAgi
    64333

Soul Thief: Models may not roll Aegis saves against woulds caused by this character’s combat attacks. If this character caused at least one unsaved wound in the previous turn’s combat phase, it gains Channel (+1)

Ethereal Lord: As long as this character is within 3” of a unit of friendly Spirit Hosts, it cannot be targeted by enemy damage spells or shooting attacks.

Spectral Influence: Mounts ridden by this model gain an Aegis (5+)

    Spell path options:
    • Evocation
    • Occultism
    • Thaumaturgy

    Options:
    • May become a wizard adept (70 points)
    • May become a wizard master (160 points)
    • May take magical enchantments (up to 100) (up to 200 if wizard master)
    • May gain Font of the Eternals (100 points)

Font of the Eternals: At the beginning of the magic phase, this model may expend up to 1 Veil Token to raise 1 wound on itself and 1 wound on a unit of friendly models with Ghost Walk within 3” of it.

    Mount Options:
    Monstrous Revenant* (110 points)
    • MUST take Great Revenant upgrade (upgrade cost already included)

*This model part’s cost does not count towards Tormented Souls limit

Purpose of this model: To be a spooky spooky ghost... that’s not enough? Drat. Alright, then it’s also an aggressive spellcaster that’s deployed solo (a LARGE downside in VC, given how multi-charging tends to work for us..) that can use spirit hosts as shields and keep your ethereal elements alive. Of course, since this model counts towards our ethereal limit, and can (in the tradition of all VC characters with options) become quite expensive, spirit hosts might well be the ONLY other ethereal elements in your list.

Font of the Eternals also works with our mounted wights and other ghost horses. This is intended.

The mount being forced to go big is to show that only a large mount will fit this big boy.

    Dracolitche
And this one. Just to be silly, and because our characters mounted on dragons just are NOT popular. The cost of the vampire on top and the death of Fortitude save bonuses killed dragon mount viability.

... So why not make these zombie dragons their own character entries? Or, at least, make an entry that functions on its own, as dragons are magical, intelligent beasts of incredible power, so it would make sense that they would pursue multiple avenues of immortality.

    Dracolitche (480-510 points)
Single model, Gargantuan Beast, 50x100 base
    UniversalAdvMarchDisReaTraits
    Walk
    Fly
    6”

    7”
    12”
    14”
91Undead, Ashes to Ashes, Fearless, Fly (7”/14”), Wizard Apprentice
    DefenseHPDWSResArm
    5663Fortitude (5+)
    OffenseAttOWSStrAPAgi
    56632Breath Weapon (toxic)

    Spell path options:
    • Evocation
    • Thaumaturgy

    Options:
    • May become a Wizard Adept (70 points)
    • May take magical enchantments (Artifacts only) (up to 100 points)
    • May become a Great Wyrm (25 points)
    • May gain Vampiric (5+) (60 points)

Great Wyrm: This model gains +1 HP and Arm, increases its base size to 100x150 and may become a Wizard Master for 160 points.

Purpose: To be an undead, spellcasting, immortal dragon. That might be vampiric.

Random commentator: “Say Gnomes, you make a lot of stuff involving dragons-” SHUT UP! I DON’T HAVE A PROBLEM, YOU HAVE A PROBLEM!

But really it’s to give VC an option to deploy some beautiful dragon zombie models without needing to take a sub-optimal character model that really doesn’t work anymore. Loss of the vampire on top should make this model between 300-600 points cheaper (depending on loadout), even if it makes the model less offensively potent.

And those are my random thoughts. I’m sorry if I got the T9A names of things wrong, hard to check from my phone. x- x
Apparently I can't have mod tags in my signature anymore. Sadness is cast. It is placed on the stack. Sadness resolves.

    Here have my homebrew

  • Interesting thread. Random thoughts as I read through:

I guess we don't know what the focus of the FAB will be... WDG/DL changed from 4 Gods to 7. Do we know for sure that current bloodlines will stick?

so, someone else has seen this? Such a cool supplement and was so looking forward to seeing what VC special terrain piece was and then we got... a cornfield?!?

Anyways, to the actual topic of the thread, perhaps some kind of colossal spirit so people can use their Nagash model?

I think it's pretty certain that Vampires will be the focus of the book :)

But whether the current bloodlines will remain in their current form, name or number is ofc up in the air. Right now each bloodline very much feels like something similar in another game.

one would hope! was definitely thinking more about the latter

Apparently corn grows well on mass graves. The ideas could have been more daring but I think it was limited to small changes. It adds some fear tactics combined with morale needs, so maybe just the name is wrong.

Well WodG surprised me in that regard. OTOH there are many takes on "Dark Gods"

Vampire archetypes are much more defined. New one could be added ofc, but it's hard to remove any.

That is ofc unless they want to drop bloodlines altogether like in 8th, which I personally would find a terrible shame

this is another good topic to discuss... dont want to continue hijacking this thread though. will probably create a new thread.

Looking forward to coming back here and reading about some cool new heroes :)
  • The Rotmaster.

A courtier level vampire with the ability to boost zombies!

Any zombies in the army gains the ability to autoraise zombies, depending on wounds caused by the unit. So a unit of zombies causing 3 wounds on an enemy unit gets 3 zombies back at the end of the phase. "But PJ, zombies never do any meaningful wounds?". True, but the rule also extends to any characters in the unit! So stick a couple of nasty vamps in the unit, and watch them grow!
Also, start boosting those zombies with spells! :D

  • Red Widow

Wizard Apprentice with the ability to use poison attacks that are also lethal strike, minor character for character assassination but cheaper than barrow king with less magic item allowance, and autonomous.

    The Laughing Men

Scarecrow unit that sacrifices toughness for high attacks and high armor piercing with skeleton strength. Also flammable, cause terror, stubborn in fields. Should have a build in aegis of 5 or 6+ as the enemy hacks away at the straw to try and kill them

    The Furred and Fanged

Karnstein only, but a werewolf unit. Extremely fast, not as tough as vargulfs but have the ability to raise wounds back into the unit and also have the ability to gain model count of enemies wounded in battle. Run off of regeneration saves like a vargulf but is a unit instead of a single model, autonomous, cant fly, but gain stubborn in forests. Could also be a skirmishing unit.

    Web Huntress

Lamian only. A spider-taur (half spider half woman), large sized hero unit that excels at binding and slowing units via shooting. Ambushes out of forests and ruins.
