Quote from Toomuchmodels: “if there's really no algorithm nor scientific method behind...why is it so difficult to just guess some values by heart by those experiencied players and go adjusting via pdf? ” That's more or less what the BLT does. They look at the unit, its current pricing, their personal experience playing with/against the unit, the changes made, look at commonly played tournament lists, look at the statistical result the data analytic team provides them about tournament results (a…

Quote from Sambazorcopter: “Let me stress that I'm not a mathematician, so I apologize in advance for my lack of knowledge of what an algorithm actually is. I assumed it was not necessarily expressed as a function, rather a mathematical approach to the problem with variables that would depend on the unit you're working with. ” I don't want to be off putting, but I do have a mathematical/computer science background, working in the field of data analytics and system building. With the questions ab…

The best chances you have to build an rule based point calculator is when it comes down to brut force fighting power of a unit compare to another unit. But the game is not only about moving two death star units into the center of the table and roling dice. That alone doesn't really help you for pointing the army, because it ignores the entire movement as well as the synagies you have with other troop types. Things like accessibility of chaff, or anti-chaff methods, and many many more aspects far…

How much value does an increase of Strength of 1 has? How much value does an increase of Attack of 1 has? How much value does an increase of Strength of 2 has? How much value does an increase of Attack of 2 has? Is it linea compare to cost of +1? Assume your unit already has S7 and with +2 get to S9 ... is that the same cost than a unit with S3 improved to S5? If the answer is no, than we are talking about a non-linear function right? Are there synergy effects if you have both +1 Attack and +1 S…

  • I am pretty sure the banner situation was the reason for the RT to change the scoring mechanic. I don't know why the situation of VS hasn't been changed. Maybe an hiccup between RT and BLT.

One part of the story is the need to handle the use of our content for cooperating companies. @Mr.Owl @lawgnome

  • I know for DL that one unit made quite a difference. I know nothing about VS. I am not even sure if that example was the right one.

The topic of internal/external balance is a bit more difficult than that. But you are ofcause welcome to have a try to building a rule based algorithm and proof me wrong.

The problem is you first need far more data than we currently have available, or how do you think such magical algorithms should materialize itself?

Quote from DaveRaven: “Quote from Giladis: “External balance is how a combined whole of a given points value compares to that of another army. Individual cost of units is influenced by how it compares to other units in the army as well beyond it, though without making direct comparisons. Establishing both internal and external balance at the same time is an immensely complicated task. ” OK, it is currently immensely complicated. How can it be made less complicated?Do you currently use an algorit…

  • Quote from berti: “One thing is, that in my opinion scoring should be linked to a banner ” We had problems with that for some armies. DL had basically only banners for core unites, VS too had similar problems I believe... I believe those cases where to motivation to disconnect Scoring from banners.

Quote: “ If RT said half a year ago to stop overpricing core units just because of core tax, than core tax is still there. Half a year ago the rules freeze was already there, no point cost correction was done since then. So core tax was there, and stayed, nothing was corrected. But it is nice to hear that the intention is there. So why not tell us that the concept of core tax is gone from the game and 2.0 will not have that concept? That would solve the whole problem if we knew that the core tax…

Quote from Smythen: “Ok. if I understand you correctly what you are saying is; An army with many strong melee options will have more expensive missile troops and vice versa. (Im not trying to trap you here, so lets not discuss dwarves ) ” That could be a design choice, yes. But obviously there are many other potential ways to build an externally balance army which is true to its ASAW Quote from Smythen: “I understand and respect the complexity of balancing, but it still feels wrong when that end…

Quote from Smythen: “Points are only for external balance. ” Sorry, no! External balance is done by looking at the whole army and all the synergies it can bring to the table. Pointing single units is not the main tool for external balance, although it has effects on it. Points are first an internal balance tool and later it has to be evaluated if the armies which can be build with that internal balance also work for external balance, but that's already step two of the balancing.

Quote from Smythen: “What I seek to achieve now after having read all these pro´s and Con's, is to stop making internal balance with points at all (as this actually makes no sense for external balance). ” And do it with water ballons instead? Points are an balance tool... internal balance primary. Which other method to do internal balance do you see?

That guidelines was already given to the BLT by the RT prior to v1.3 Quote from Sir_Joker: “The RT gave the BLT some time back (I think it was halve a year ago?) the guideline to not purposefully overprice any specific core unit unless there is a need to do so design-wise. For the chaff example: there are some armies which we want to have access to core chaff but we do not want the chaff units to push other core units out of the picture (mostly the R&F lower powered combat units). ” Nonethel…

I just wished you good luck, with your project. I wanted to imply that threatening to setup a new Projekt, which is more of your liking is no threat but has to be welcome. Quote from imperialengineer: “If core tax is meant to differentiate between similar units in an army book, what does that mean for external balance? Let's say we have a core unit (C) and a special unit (S). If they fill similar rolls they should have similar external balance considerations (considering synergies, etc....) But if S is externally balanced and C is a core version of S, when you tax C to differentiate from S don't you weaken C's external balance? ” External balance is not something …
