  • @Baranovich an example from GW itself. In 6th edition the BSB allowed to re-roll only Break tests but the specific wording was that a "unit within 12 in of the BSB may re-roll failed Break tests". This is clearly counterintuitive because the BSB is supposed to inspire you all the time, not only whenever it's beneficial for you, and sometimes you'd rather not take the re-roll and Break. This is why, while I understand your intention, must vs may is very important to have clear rules.

  • As mentioned before, they are working on improving the clarity of the rules, this is the main thread and there is a thread per chapter of the book: The road to 205 - Help Wanted (community)

  • Quote from N3okorrales: “Quote from Randdogs: “Quote from Hoffa: “Exactly what is written. In large parts of europe gaming culture is not centred around stores. Stores are not are not wer you go to play games or meet new gamers. ” Read opposite for the US. ” of course you read the opposite from the us, just a hint of socialism is treated like ebola. I sugested them to do the same thing we do in europe, create a youth asociation at your local town hall, ask for space to play and start doing activ…

  • I think instead of clashing heads against each other, we should realize that gaming cultures are different across different countries. I grew up in a town (~200k inhabitants, maybe a bit more now) in Spain. Warhammer products were sold in a couple of stores dedicated to either toys (limited stock) or board games+comics+roleplaying (your classical local game store). GW decided to open a store there maybe 6 or 7 years after I first started to play Warhammer, and although I guess they got to introd…

  • @Fnarrr I have a question that goes a bit out of scope of HBE and more to the game in general. How do you see the role of heavy cavalry as a unit type in T9A at the moment? I have seen complaints both here and in the EoS subforum that core Knights are somewhat lacking a purpose that's not anti-chaff, character delivery or fast scoring, and only very killy entries like Vampire Knights or Knights of Ryma are included for their damage output. Monstruous Cavalry is always better at grinding than reg…

  • I don't think I have ever seen anyone in this subforum asking for a pure gunline, more like complaining we have too many gunline elements (this is partly due to GW heritage, QG, Sloops, QC honour come from 8th additions). In any case a shooty style would be covered under a), wouldn't it? Infantry I understand as part of either a) or b). Jack of all trades isn't part of b)? I don't think we can do monster mash though? Unless you mean bringing 2 Dragons and a Phoenix.

  • I think it was mentioned to be: a) Castle and Countercharge b) Combined Arms (balanced mix of combat, magic, shooting that requires unit coordination to achieve victory). c) Cavalry and monsters where the focus is on speed and aggression but getting stuck is very punishing (weakness in grinding weaker than normal for elves due to number of bodies traded for speed). To give an example, I believe that the Queen's Cavalier honour was intended to promote c) if mounted in a Monster, and b) if on a Ho…

  • Quote from Eldan: “I liked the changes of eight edition when it came around. Because for the first time in quite a while I felt as if large units of Skaven actually had a chance against things like chaos warriors, elves or vampires, because they wouldn't just clash, five elite models and a hero would wipe out the first rank and that was combat. Supporting attacks and horde formations were a great idea, as far as I'm concerned. (Horde formation I always fluffed as envelopment in my head.) ” How d…

  • Quote from kisanis: “Dear god I forgot how that used to work.I skipped 7 and just played A LOT of WHFB 6. Supporting attacks, shooting in 2 ranks, and the ability for death-stars to just deny the ability to strike back (you smash in with a big block of knights, kill a bunch of enemies, break them, overrun, repeat). I think returning to something like this would be good, but would have to be done carefully in a 3.0 version to make sure we don't interfere with the game too much. As far as the bina…

  • Quote from Lagerlof: “In what scenario would a cav unit fail to charge infantry and then get charged themselves in real life Or how come knights can charge knights but only one of them can effectively use their lances? Did the other knight unit pause for tea? ” Fair points, although for the first one I think WFB had the premise (carried over here) that a failed charge means the unit becomes disorganized and is unable to react to the infantry charge to counter-charge themselves. It would be cool …

  • Quote from RobotsWillRule: “I understand facing/LOS rules are a mechanic to make facing important, but it is unrealistic (no one in the unit turned their head?) and more importantly it limits gameplay. When units are big, slow and can’t see they can’t do anything. Players need to be able to play. Turns don’t need to be limited to 6 but they will be limited so players need to be able to do us much as possible/ reasonable in those turns. Remove LOS arc, make infantry faster and let friendly units …

  • I have noticed Cosmology being almost absent (I think 1 list took a Cosmology Master), while the most favoured choice is Divination followed by Pyromancy. Can someone illustrate me why is Divination considered much better than Cosmology? Is it because the two magic missiles are key vs monsters plus the attribute is good for Panic/Break tests? Thanks for helping a noob out P.S. I guess also Asfad plus a MoCT allows a nice range increase.

  • Quote from Aenarion43: “That was the question, yes. Did you consider Book of Arcane Power enabling a 2 dice Favor to be too powerful. Thank you for the prompt answer. The discussion came about from @Fnarrr saying that 2 dice for Favor was too powerful. I replied that Book of Arcane Mastery enabled it with (to me) an acceptable chance of success. ” Yes but he mentioned that restrictions and chance of success are what makes it ok, I guess in particular the fact that it has to be the first spell ca…

  • It would seem that our EoS friends also think their knights are not good enough, even with the 1+ AS: Fixing empire knights The main argument is that Knights of the Sun Griffon simply perform the same role better than Electoral Cavalry. However at the end of the thread there is a list with a 13 Electoral Cavalry unit housing a Knight Commander, a Prelate and a BSB Marshal, and a report of how the list performed in a team tournament in Norway with 10 teams. The list played DE, VC and SE twice. Li…

  • I think this thread is very interesting. I am a player in a similar situation to @JimMorr, I played 6th edition and I slowly stopped during 7th (university, power creep of army books, GW price hikes were the main reasons). I skipped 8th completely although I have read some battle reports online. I discovered T9A last year because I wanted to play a fantasy wargame again and I wanted to finish painting my own army (I find it relaxing to paint). I was originally attracted to WFB as a teenager by t…

  • The ideal case is when 2+ people want to learn so that you can match them against each other and teach them the rules and comment on their play. For 1 person, the solution of @Windelov is quite good. My fourth T9A game was against an ETC player and he was very polite, explaining things and pointing out mistakes (after I took the decisions). It was a good learning experience, but I had already played WFB in the past, so I wasn't a complete newbie.

  • Quote from Fnarrr: “Thing is, heirloom does that for HbE because the hereditary is flexible enough to take in most cases. You also get Asfad and DM. So you do get 6 spells on a single model, with -1 to CVs ” They are starting from the assumption that Drain Magic is useless (or very niche at best), I don't think they are going to agree with this.

  • Quote from AlexCat: “Quote: “Also moot, you should be magic'ing it away. ” And this is where it gets interesting.Looking at the latest "pro" HBE rosters I can see only MoCT for magic and no more. How are you gonnd magic it if you dont have single magic missile? ” Well, I imagine if only MoCT is present there is either Queensguard, SGR or Sloops right? Also isn't Pyro/Alchemy OotFH popular? And I have seen several Cosmology Adepts for cheap Perception of Strength + Ice and Fire. Maybe I should ch…
