  • Quote from Kruber: “So how would you play against steam tank? Genuine question. In may experience tank is incredibly powerful unit and most of my opponent have to put considerable resources to neutralize it. But it's also my experience that as soon as there is some counter on the field it goes down really quickly. Alchemy, S6 attacks, etc.. ” Contextual on many things: your army, scenario, their army, deployment... My fundamental thesis is that the tank rarely wins games, it merely prevents the …

  • Quote from Peacemaker: “heh, I know the spanish guys won the ETC but we'll start laughing at them if they don't see how the Steam Tanks hard counters like Alchemy, cannons, strength 6, AP 3, stuff is the reason it can't keep going up in price. Seriously they need to play against lists that have the hard counters and then come back and say it's the best unit in the game. I think its just their meta. ” I did offer to fly to Spain and teach people how to play against it. Genuinely, I made this offe…

  • I dno if you are deliberately misinterpreting me, or I am stating things badly. I will assume the latter and attempt to clarify. Quote from Phosphorus: “Quote from DanT: “For what its worth, my view is that anyone using the steam tank to cover their flanks is playing EoS fundamentally wrong... I love it when EoS players do this against me, I then just ignore it and take their other stuff off. But that is by the by and not what this conversation is about. This discussion is also not about whether…

  • Quote from Krokz: “@DanT I think some armies can't just have Core as good as Special point for point? For example EoS and HbE heavy Cavalry or SE and DE light cavalry ” Chaff and support units aside, because that runs into other issues. But I see no reason why main combat units in core should not have the same points efficiency as if the same unit were in special. I have even been told that this is what we are supposed to be doing, although I think I am not alone in thinking we haven't managed i…

  • Not gonna happen. Besides, similar legacy armies were fine even before they had such artillery pieces, so I doubt it would meaningfully solve any existing problems better than the hellmaw.

  • Oh, I should add, there is one specific theoretical calculation that I have considered re:core. I define the important question to be "if this unit was special, is it equally points efficient as the other special units?". Thus, a direct comparison of core units to special units in the same book, is a sensible (but specific and limited) calculation that I would support as part of a core pricing methodology, in an attempt to improve the shortcomings of the empirical approach. However, turning this…

  • Quote from izakko: “Thanks for your reply @DanT. In which case do you agree that when we assess the point-efficiency in a vacuum that WDG would generally need to be more efficient in straight fights (there might be exceptions but I'm more interested in the general approach) due to the lack of "other options"? ” My answer (not official project answer, cos I don't have the time to go check to what extent the relevant people agree with what I'm saying; indeed there are definitely some who don't): I…

  • Quote from izakko: “@DanT I'll take a swing at this as I've always believed you to be one of the most understanding and reasonable RT members. Most WDG players are not challenging your pricing algorithm but rather the philosophy. Here's something to consider: Army 1 has a mix of good movement, magic, shooting and CC choices. Army 2 has only good CC choices. Based on current pricing logic, every option has to stand on its own, the result is that a full CC list from Army 1 stands an equal chance a…

Quote from Chorizo: “This has no merit. It comes inherited from WH.You have lot of options. Viable options few. The internal balance is very bad and nobody fix that. And this problem is old. (Board Riders, Trolls, GGI, etc.) And since last year, external balance is also bad. ” Can I just clarify that you think boarboyz are bad? Quote from kaisersose: “I did give arguments in my post and the answer was "I assume you’re joking". The O&G book has no clear strenghts. They have been removed by ne…

  • Quote from There Is No Spoon: “I would start with Core units, beginning with an algorithm or at the very least a set of principles with regard to stats/equipment and then adjust upwards/downwards based on army options, ie. Raise, synergy, AWSR, playstyle options. Finally, allow a bit of gut-feeling informed by tourney performance, but limit such influence to a small percentage of the total cost. ” Do you have an algorithm worked out? What values does it give for core unit for (picking a couple o…

  • You seem to be suggesting some sort of algorithm that is data independent. Is that correct? Every time I have looked into this I have found it to be horrendously complicated and deliver poor results. To clarify: are you advocating this solely for the prices of core units or for all units?

  • Ok. I haven't got time to answer every random complaint that gets brought up when I ask a specific question. My question stands. As a general question of methodology, not WotDG specific. I am not having an argument about whether it is better or worse than what has previously been done with WotDG. You personally know that there is much done previously with WotDG that I disagree with, so this seems like a pretty disingenuous response to what I thought was a reasonable question.

  • For what its worth, my view is that anyone using the steam tank to cover their flanks is playing EoS fundamentally wrong... I love it when EoS players do this against me, I then just ignore it and take their other stuff off. But that is by the by and not what this conversation is about. This discussion is also not about whether the tank is or isn't auto-include. Or about whether things that are auto include should go up in price. There are some auto-include things that did not go up in price in …

  • Quote from There Is No Spoon: “Quote from DanT: “Assuming unit vs unit pricing, and that there is a clear way to do this (this latter is a huge assumption I think; the devil is very much in the details here). If this methodology was implemented for pricing units, and resulted in wacky external balance, how would you solve it? ” Let me flip the question around: If an army specializes in playing as an Active CC aggressor, but cannot win combat in a straight up fight against Generalist reactive arm…

  • Quote from Councillor: “I’d guess you would have to roll a fair few dice against other core units in other armies at same point costs. In a vacuum. There needs to be a standard economy balance where point for point each unit is completely even before army roles come into it. Wdg should, point for point, best any other unit in straight up slugfest. Not unit for unit. There will always be other units that have niches and roles. But for the lack of shooting and currently magic it’s all we have. ” I…

  • Quote from Councillor: “I have an issue with the tournament play deciding what’s good and what isn’t, what needs a price decrease or not. Often we take units not because they are amazing, but because they are less inferior. Most armies use warriors in core. Everyone knows they’re far too expensive. Yet with every list using them we won’t see a price drop? ” The first part of your question is answered by external balance data. If a unit is used, but its army book is still significantly underperfo…

A thought (and perhaps not a good one): I worry that a set of how to guides would still not be a readable document. I don't think this is a bad idea, just that it is a separate product/goal to what I personally had in mind for this sort of thing.
