  • @arwaker. I like the fact that the failed stupidity test has an upside. I would prefer it if units in combat also had to test. DanT’s suggestion is more complex but also has more flavour as a result so I probably prefer it but there are merits to both ideas.

  • @DanT. I really like it. I assume they would keep the same stat line and the vomit rule? It would certainly open up new tactics for O&G players.

  • Correct, there should be a tactical challenge to using trolls, rather it just being a case of once every 4 or so turns they fail. I don’t mind them being difficult to use as long as there are ways to semi control it and they are enough benefit to make it worthwhile.

  • @xaby86 i don’t think it’s a bad idea but there is very little tactical element to it. Basically as long as they can see an enemy (which will be almost all the time) they take a test where they have a roughly 75% chance of success. Whilst I don’t like the current over-reliance on the general, I would prefer something that meant that you used the nearest units leadership instead as this still requires you to manage the stupidity and if you plan poorly you will suffer. With your solution there is …

  • Quote from Nazgob: “The problem with trolls as damage dealers is that gnashers have the same role. If trolls are rewritten as an anvil unit their role overlaps with Iron Orcs quite a bit. ” I don’t get this at all. Firstly all the army books have multiple damage dealing units. Why shouldn’t we have several to choose from. Secondly trolls are completely different to gnashers. The only similarity is S5. Gnashers are high Ag, high WS infantry killers that do huge amounts of damage but take huge amo…

  • The majority of people who play this and other fantasy games do so at home, with mates, or at local games clubs. To that kind of player the fluff is just as important as the rules, as evidenced by the success of GW. If this game is written just with tournament players in mind and with no consideration to fluff players it will sink in no time at all. And saying that people who think this are stupid is likely to just get you ignored on the forums.

  • Quote from kaisersose: “Quote from sgu97bjd: “Well there were about 5 taken to the ETC and they haven't significantly changed since then.... The ‘problem’ is that the bigger discipline bubble that a Wyvern gives you is really good in an O&G list because we are quite discipline dependent. So we pay a relatively high price for this compared to other armies where it matters less. I wouldn’t want to see too much of an improvement in its combat stats as it will become very expensive very fast. Th…

  • @DanT. I think stupidity is a very flavoursome rule. Trolls are almost always depicted in literature as being stupid so it should be represented on the table. I think it could be improved in terms of how it has been implemented. There could be an upside to being stupid, or trolls could use the closest models discipline rather than the generals which would allow some more flexibility.

  • Quote from Baldin: “what do you guys feel about switching Troll str and res. Thus making them res 5 str 4. This makes the troll more tanky, but less deadly. It also makes troll belch more usefull since trolls would only have ap1. ” I think that could be a very good solution.

  • Quote from yhandros: “Stupidity must go and they can optionally become scoring. Easy. ” @AutoHammer My comment that stupidity should stay was in response to this. Should have quoted it.

  • I agree with @Gingersmali. They need some help but not a complete rework. Stupidity is part of what trolls are, units have to have disadvantages and whilst trolls have too many at present we shouldn’t be trying to get rid of stupidity altogether, just lessen the impact slightly.

  • That may be an interesting thought experiment but the reason I play this game (and I am just speaking for myself here) is because I have an emotional attachment to the army I play with. As an example, I have a lifetime of being exposed to trolls and their characteristics, from fairy tales as a child, to lord of the rings, to pop culture, to the the game that shall not be named. All of these things have created that emotional attachment over a number of years and as a result I feel like I underst…

  • That tension is always going to be there. We have the book with probably the most options in 9th age so some overlap in purpose is inevitable. Personally I see this as a major plus and it’s what keeps me playing almost exclusively one army because I have some many ways to play it. Trolls are different enough imo from the other combat units but their downsides (not scoring, need for babysitter, flaming attacks) are currently leaving them on most people’s shelves. I don’t think it will take much t…

  • I don’t think there are major design problems with trolls, but minor tweaks are needed. Stupidity, vomit and regeneration are all very flavoursome rules and add a lot to the immersive experience of playing 9th age so I would be very sorry to see them go. I do however think that stupidity needs modifying, something like what @Wesser said where they have to use the nearest units Ld. I would go further and say that they do not benefit from either hold your ground or inspiring presence but the downs…

  • I stopped using them when their points were put up, it just wasn’t worth it. Now I would say they are about in the right place, not auto include certainly but a reasonable gamble.

  • Great book, just discovered this and love most of what you have done. My main suggestion would be with the gnasher wrecking team. The way it currently works it is like a grenade and is a pretty unique unit to our book. I realise that it is way too complicated and so needs simplifying but I think there are still ways to make it function like a grenade without all the complexity. I like how you have streamlined the movement, but at the moment if it gets charged it will probably die before doing mu…

  • @Baldin how do wizard apprentices compare in points? Are we still more expensive than empire, vermin etc?

  • Please don’t. I love cheap goblin heroes and an extra wound will only push up their cost.

  • 2 wrecking teams in this list seems like a big risk. You can’t really put them anywhere near your spider in case they roll a triple and accidentally plough into it
