The latest issue of the 9th Scroll is here! You can read all about it in the news.
Blade dancers moved to fleet of foot, starting size -2 models, base cost -10pts, additional models -2ppm
So 8 dancers for 320 points, 10 dancers for 380 and they now are in FoF, which is cramped as hell. Great.
Where they sooo OP?
This is my initial reaction, will go into depth once I've chewed through everything.
Blade Dancers cost 40 pts Per model now?!? and Fleet of Foot?
This is nuts, plain and simply nuts.
We are back at 7 out of 14 units + mounted characters being fleet of foot? We were just starting to go the right way with 6 of 14 in the last update!
Kestrel Knights didn't loose skirmish and got cheaper for more models added... but no one would add more models to a skirmishing monsterous base unit in the first place. The changes did nothing as we asked for, to actually make them work as a unit.
Shapeshifter is back to his old self but with a huge price tag. Erhm not sure if it changed anything for him to be picked again.
40% hidden arrows is good, except there are a ton of limitations tossed on our shooting units (Sentinels and Pathfinders) and now Briar Maidens take up two categories including this one.
Nice buff on the Forrest Prince. Definately a plus, now we just need some good bow options but pretty happy about the change.
Rangers now cheaper, good. But they still miss a defined role but now they are at least cheap enough to consider a unit.
Thicket Beast Scoring, hmm. I'd never consider using them as a scoring unit and always as a Vined unit with S 5. So.. maybe someone will draw benefit from it, okay I guess.
Sylvan Sentinels, slightly cheaper but with strange extra restrictions. You can really see how there is an arguement over how to make Sylvan Elves work with so many restrictions.
Pathfinders. Okay, now I am starting to question if anyone actually ever reads a Sylvan Elf post. This is the one unit which has garnered the most comments about being too expensive for what it does, and there is exactly no change to it.
All in all, the initial feel is that this is even worse than 1.2 for sylvan elves
At least including a comment on why our top issue (new skirmish rule) was not addressed would be nice. I suppose that putting our last uncomped iconic unit under the 45% cap while dropping points on its ranked equivalent sums it up.
Not being able to field anything like what i consider a SE army is where i draw the line just fyi.
*edit: I'll mess around with some lists but definitely reconsidering adepticon attendance atm.
And actually I know you've answered it once but this really merits asking again.
40 pts for a Blade Dancer? Seriously thats the most expensive infantry model in the game.
Even a WotDG Chosen with all the most expensive upgrades is cheaper.
22 base cost for the first 10 + 8 for Mark of Pestillence + 6 for Halberd = 36 pts per model and then 38 pts for models after the first 10.
Did you receive a counter argument as to why changing the lores about was rejected? We had an extremely strong argument behind our suggestion, quoting multiple instances of already published fluff and sound logical points based on our Army design poll. Did they simply not want change up sisters of the thorn role? Not want to add another lore? Still sticking to the idea that Divination personifies the spirit-side of the forest spirits even though the already published fluff explicitly states that Divination draws it's power from knowledge as opposed to shamanism which draws power from the spirit?
I'm not faulting them for not changing it to fit my vision of the army, just curious for flaws in the argument.
So stubborn in forest is equal to 21% point cost increase? For example Fallen (WDG light troops core infantry) didnt recieve any changes.
Purpose of 70 pts increase to shapeshifter cost? I will explain:
in 1.2 he was 120 pts with 5++ and no one would take him.
in 1.3 he is 140 with 6++ so it is +20 pts for -1 ward (great deal!)
in 1.3 he is 150 with 5++ but with Talisman slot occupied (so it is 30 pts nerf compaired to 1.2)
in 1.3 he is 190 with 4++ but with 50 points in armour/talisman slot (70 pts for +1 ward compared to 1.2, you know you can have 5+ 4++ armour for 90 pts with any character)
At least i hope Jack`s pickaxe could make him viable again...

The characters category is still listed as 35% in the pdf, while the change list says it should be 40%. Which one is correct?
Not. Ok. Sry.
When by far the most talked about issue for Sylvan Elves since 1.2 has been how useless Pathfinders are for cost, why was the only change for them to be further restricted?
Along with some other of the changes it gives the distinct impression player's concerns about the army are pointless and ignored.
The change I like the most is the increased stats on our Princes. Pretty useless buffs, but still really cool ! Like that. Just need a good, 150/200 points bow now.
The change yo unseen arrows is most welcome, as well as the up to Rangers.
In my opinion, Blade Dancers are really overcosted now. Sure, they were strong, but 40 ppm for naked infantry ? It's just too much. Too much points to lose. Same for the Shapeshifter, he was already subpar and he takes a heavy double nerf.
I think Pathfinders and Sentinels really needs some buffs, but they mostly need a rework, so we'll wait untill book review.
I would have like to see some love given to Wyscan Bow and Whirlwind Blade, and to our wizards, but it's more in the scope of a book review too.
Big question: I don't see how any of this helps our main request of better shooting? The Maidens are an effective reduction of the Unseen Arrows category and now we are even more restricted on Pathfinders/Sentinels.
Yay Init and BS for our prince. I can feel a fighty lord coming on! At least until HBE hears about it and insists they also get I9.
Positive about dancers being stubborn in a forest again, positive about the reduced unit starting size but would have liked a price drop as well. Not sure the base points increase per model is in relation to Stubbern though as we didn't see a points drop when they lost it. Wouldn't mind these guys dropping scoring and getting a points drop.
Positive about scoring Thicket Beasts. Grumpy about the unit now being max 6 models.
Positive about the Unseen Arrows max going up, grumpy about the fact that Briar Maidens are now in both and will take up way more than 5% of that category so effective reduction.
Positive about Thicket BSB dropping to 50pts. Good that they fixed that typo.
Positive about Rangers price drop. Still not sure how I'm going to use them, though they are becoming more attractive the cheaper they get!
Pathfinders Kindred to Unseen Arrows is a bit grumpy but not unexpected. Would have liked something for Pathfinders to help offset this but everything points to shooting being unfavourable so no chance of some love going in their direction. At least Obsidian is cheaper so the Kindred can provide some love against the Pyro Attribute spell.
Character Max going to 40% I assume is in alignment to everyone else. Doesn't effect us either way as from what I can see our characters are best spent with unit synergies in mind and few of those cost effective in the first place (I'm looking at you dancer Kindred).
Will be interesting to see how badly this screws my lists. I suspect not significantly..."The combination of lemon and habenero peppers was confusing to me. I will pay for this tomorrow i think." - Rosanjin Scholar, Iron Chef
