I think the Kings of War Ogre models look way better than the GW ones and they're cheaper too, but I wondered if anyone has any experience with them before I potentially buy some. The only customer review for the 'mega army' says "I wanted to assemble some ogres as wielding a two-handed weapon, which is one of the available options. Unfortunately, this was not possible: as much as I tried, there was no way the shoulder would attach to the torso properly without having the wrists dislodge, and vice-versa." Here's a link to the page. The customer only gives them 2 stars. If you've bought Mantic Ogres, have you found assembly to be a problem? Any other opinions or experience with this model range?
The latest issue of the 9th Scroll is here! You can read all about it in the news.
I build my army using the mega army box from Mantic. The set includes many bags of 3 ogres with various bits. I think you get three different ogre body's in each little pack (these are torso and legs together). I had two issues with the models, first is the two hand weapon bits, they don't fit well and require some green stuff or careful removal of part of the ogre torso. The second issue was getting some of the ogres to stand on bases nicely, this required filing down on of the feet as that is a gate location.
But, they are still a great deal for starting an ogre army. I will post some pictures once I get home.
I use mainly mantic ogres and Love them. Price - to - quality is really great.
The two handed weapons models are a pain to assemble. The sword and shield and musket ones fit together very well.
I had problem with two models having warped legs that wouldnt connect to the base. Dipping them in hot water makes them adjustable.
4/5 i would rate the plastic mantic ogres.
I've got some as well,
The Details are nice, but ive had some Problems with some bits beeing bend and the Plastic is a little different from the GW Plastic, my Plastic Glue didnt want to keep them together.
Quite alright for the price.
The Tin models like Ogre Braves and Young Hunters are very nice!
I use the old GW ogres and face the same problem.
I've removed the saddle from the tusker, and put the ogres behind the tuskers with whips, 'driving them forward'.
For auroch and mammoth ive just removed the ogre riders. You could eventually put some mantic ogres with large spears on the base, as 'herders'.
I agree that this is a problem that most other armies don’t face. The Mantic ogres and the GW ogres have two very different design aesthetics, making it hard to mix the two.
I would probably use the Mantic ogre chariots for tuskers. As for the rock aurochs and frost mammoths, I do like the idea of having an ogre standing next to the beast acting as a handler. I would probably avoid buying the GW version of those two models, as you wouldn’t be able to do anything with the riders without them looking comparatively silly next to your army (unless you really like how those models look, of course).
If you have any skill with milliput/green stuff, you can turn one of your ogres into a rider by removing his legs and recrafting thes legs in a riding position. That’s what I’m going to be doing with mine (if I ever find the time).
Conversely, if you have a monster model you really like, you can also skip the rider all together. It may not work for the strictest of tournaments, but it works just fine for everything else (it’s what I’ve been doing for a long time with my two monsters).
