I might as well come clean and show you guys another one of my reason why all my other threads are snailing along...

This time it is my O&G army. The basic concept is orc bodies from "Kings of war" with heads from "Spellcrow". This was to achieve a more lean less gorilla type of orc... while still having the huge characterful cartoony heads! Hopes this makes sense

Also got an armoured giant conversion going on... a mix of common goblins with cave goblin arms... a bunch of trolls and a lot more!

Right now the painting is on for my spear armed orcs, but more to come in the next couple of years

And thinking about getting some "new" shields for my orcs aswell. These days it is all about capturing that old school feel - do not ask me why, something has just clicked in my head

Can you guyes help me out with which shields would look the best? The colour will most likely be a strong red, but I have considered a yellow as well...
There are two designs I am currently looking at:
Rotten Factory or Warmonger Miniatures

round shields for hand weapon guys, kite shields for spear armed units. That's my general rule anyway.

Does this have some historic background? The idea is cool, but I think I am going to go with just one of the companies to keep the look similar. I think perhaps the kite shield company also have some round shields aswell... I will dig a bit deeper!
Regarding the colour, red would be the standard go-to colour. I am wondering how good a yellow shield would look, any thoughts?

I say round shields, I like them better and the details looks sharper.
A rich yellow would work just fine for them IMHO!

Without any facts to back this at all, but my assumption is that kited shields for spearmen come from that they push the tip of the shield in the earth for an impending charge by mounted enemies.

Also, have you ever tried to fight with a sword and kite shield? It's hard, way easier to use a round shield.

I guess the long kite shields just look better with the length of the spears. So there's a visual reason I pair those 2 up.

Kited shields were first used by cavalry because you'd use the rounded part to protect the torso and the elongated part wouldn't be in the way while protecting the leg. Afaik.

Got some work in on giant Jesus...turns out he is french ;P - boots and legs still WIP, and the Club will get some spikes me thinks!

Working on a concept for a cheap orc spearman. Thinking it was a desert tribe that got defeated and denied access to the good gear - only spears (but of a different less industrial design). And forced to join the WAAAGH! Might use them as feral orcs due to lack of armour...

Head from Spellcrow, body from Mantic, arms and spear tip from GW orcs and hands plus spear shaft from GW goblins... plus a wee bit ó green stuff

It was very interesting see the mix of arms and kits. The NG arms actually look good on the common goblins. Then using the gobbo arms on the orcs looks even better, they are the right size for those bodies. Great conversions overall.

A very interesting blog and Jesus is coming along nicely, yeah, you will be busy for years to come. :thumbsup:

looking back at the shields I would say that the kite shields are probably best for a unit where you will have to repeat shield designs. There's a lot more variety to go around.
