  • There are great many undead models by great many companies. Most of them are quite old and there is not much interesting you can do with a generic skeleton model anyway, so I am not linking all of them, limiting this selection to the models I like or find good value for the price. Instead, I link many alternative miniatures lists at the bottom of the post, so you can find more alternatives there.

There is now a discussion thread about the models here.

    A few comments first:
    • The models listed here are not perfect and many are not on the same level as the original ones (those are usually way older than the current GW range). I am not saying losing GW models won't be a pity, if anything this work is making me appreciate them even more. I am just saying that a solution exists. The important part is, the models are out there.
    • This is not only my work. I have used ideas and suggestions from various places and am very grateful for the collective wisdom of the internet communities.
    • In many cases I was unsure about the size of the models and was forced to go on guesswork only. I hope at least some of them will work.
    • When possible, I have tried to link to groups of models and larger units, if only to show multiple sculpts at once. Most of the companies sell the individual models as well, should that be preferred.
    • I am quite a chaotic person and may have overlooked something awesome. I usually try to link sites that offer greater number of useful models or the ones I know I have not exhausted, but searching around the linked models might yield even more fruit.
    • If you know about something useful not linked here, please let me know and I will add it. This is by no means an exhaustive list and can never be, but I would like to list as many possibilities as possible.

  • Skeletons are easy to find, but I expected the rest of Tomb Kings army to be very specific with their Egyptian feel. Luckily Gamezone does an extensive range and Crocodile Games and Reaper also have quite a lot of models. It should also be possible to search for historical Egyptians for stuff like chariots and converting them with some skeletal horses.

Grendel does some Egyptian scenery that could be also helpful.
And for even more suggestions, you can have a look at this list (I took most of my alternatives from there) and this one. [Read More]
  • There are many dwarf models and complete ranges out there, some of them old but many of them very pretty. The army as a whole is very simple, with no nasty surprises or anything complicated in the units and even the warmachines, while numerous, are relatively straightforward. In the end the biggest problem for me was the fact that most of the units look almost the same to me. I guess this is where my elven background shows. There are probably many more companies making dwarves as well.

  • The army from which I expected the most problems. Surprisingly, there are two Skaven ranges, one made by Mirliton and an extensive one by Black Tree Designs. I have zero experience with either company, I have however heard some bad things about Black Tree and their long delivery times, so proceed with caution. I have also heard something about Mantic working on a Skaven faction for their Kings of War, so maybe we're getting nicer models soon.

I recommend going through the whole Black Tree and Mirliton ranges and Black Hat Rat Men Pirates section. Black Scorpion makes a bloodbowl/fantasy football team, which might be useful as well. There are also rat heads as conversion bits, both plain and with gas masks (and some wearing Samurai helmets for those into such things). These can be put onto any model, probably including some steampunk or WWI ones. Steampunk weapons for weapon team conversions are by Curious Constructs. [Read More]

Daemons are a very colourful army with many models that are easy to find, but they also have quite a lot of strange things and warmachines I found almost impossible to replace. However, the nature of Chaos means great creative freedom in how to portray each unit, so don't feel constrained by my (very limited and based on GW) choices or even the original models.

  • There are tons of different barbarian miniatures (I didn't even link all of them), Gamezone has a full Chaos range and Avatars of War have some very nice models, including a few units as well as many different heroes. Beast Herds were one of the armies where I expected more problems and what saved the most when compiling this list were the amazing Mierce Miniatures (I am just worried about the price tag for such an army). And of course the alternative model threads at the Herdstone, from which I took many on this list: here and here. [Read More]
  • As the Kingdom of Equitaine is basically a historical human army, there should be many alternatives among historical wargames and heroes basically everywhere (I didn't even try to find all the possible historical manufacturers, mainly because I am not completely sure about the style the models should have). Gamezone also has a feudal knights range that seems to be exactly this. My favourite heroes are probably from Darksword, but there should be many other options as they are, again, just medieval humans.

    the-ninth-age.com/lexicon/inde…472-orcs-and-goblins-o-g/

Games Workshop Orcs are very specific, but also well-known enough to have many models and whole ranges made in exactly the same style. Gamezone has a range of models intended exactly for Warhammer units and Mantic has both Orcs and Goblins as separate ranges and that is only the tip of the iceberg. The greatest problem was the doom diver as the strangest thing the army has.

  • As we all know, the 9th Age team wants the game to be played for years to come, independent on any particular profit-oriented company. We already have the rules (at least the beta version), armylists are coming tomorrow and then we can start convincing people to play with us. The only question remaining is where do we find new models. Some of us might fear the production of certain miniatures might be shut down some day - what can we do then?

The Unsupported Armies blog was created with the aim to provide some concrete suggestions for all the numerous units we can field and I am very happy to be part of the growing 9th Age community. In the following days, posts will appear with alternative models for every entry of every army in the 9th age armylists.

    A few comments first:
    • The models listed here are not perfect and many are not on the same level as the original ones (those are usually way older than the current GW range). Some will have to be converted. But haven't we always done that? Many of the models in our armybooks have not been in GW stores for a long time, even not considering all the conversions for the reasons of price, personal taste or theme. I am not saying losing GW models won't be a pity, if anything this work is making me appreciate them even more. I am just saying that a solution exists. The important part is, the models are out there.
