Fantasy Battles: The 9th Age

This site uses cookies. By continuing to browse this site, you are agreeing to our Cookie Policy.

Fantasy Battles: The 9th Age is an independent table top miniature wargame set in a fantasy world, in which players take control of armies and set them upon one another in conflicts ranging from minor skirmishes to mighty battles with hundreds of models.

The game and all of its rules are completely free to download and use, and consist of a main rulebook and over fifteen army documents, ranging from stoic men and noble elves to the feral orcs and dread worshipers of the dark gods. You can easily assemble your own army using appropriate 28mm miniatures from any manufacturer.

Fantasy Battles: The 9th Age has been created by a group of experienced wargamers, a large supportive staff and continuous input from the wargaming community. We aim to provide a competitive, balanced and fun game, with updates and new rules to be released regularly.

We’ve created 16 unique armies from the Dread Elves in the west to the Ogre Khans in the east. Each army has different units and playstyles and can be represented by models from any 28mm model company. People said it was impossible, but we have created a game that is both balanced and fun. Don’t believe us? Try it for yourselves.

Happy wargaming.

Am I correct in thinking that Shady Gits are not upgrades to Common Goblin units (since you 'take' them and don't 'upgrade' a model to be one)? If your Common Goblin unit is running with bows, you then don't pay for a bow for these guys?

  • wcf.user.avatar.alt
    micdicdoc

With Shady Gits, the max size of the unit is then 63 models? Do I have this right?

  • wcf.user.avatar.alt
    piteglio

i see it the other way. unlike Mad Gits, you *deploy* Shady Gits. so i would pay 57 goblins, 3 gits, and 60 bows. but i look forward to the opinion of someone who know more than i do.

    Lich King

I'd say: 1. they're part of the unit and the units maximum size is set to 60. Regardless of the type of model.

  • wcf.user.avatar.alt
    Lich King

    2. You don't need to buy bows for them. They can't even buy a bow. So they don't pay and they can't use bows. So 57 Common goblins with bows and three shady gits

  • wcf.user.avatar.alt
    micdicdoc

Arguably then, 2. also applies when buying Mad Gits?

  • wcf.user.avatar.alt
    micdicdoc

So if you want three Mad Gits you could only ever have a max 57 Cave Goblins?

  • wcf.user.avatar.alt
    Lich King

I'd say the Surprise rule makes them not count against that limit since they're not deployed with unit

    15.G Break Test
Each unit on the side that lost the Round of Combat must take a Break Test. The order is chosen by the losing player.
A Break Test is a Discipline Test with a negative modifier equal to the Combat Score difference (i.e. if the Combat
Score was 6 to 3, the units on the losing side take Break Tests with a −3 modifier).

If the test is passed, the unit remains Engaged in the Combat. If the test is failed, the unit Breaks and Flees. Remember
that units within 6” of a friendly unit that Breaks must take a Panic Test (see Panic Test ).

I suppose if MR was a double edged sword it would be a more meaningful choice. I’d happily forgo casting buffs on my elite troops which arguably don’t need them, so I could stop Pyro!

    5.C.a Discipline Tests
Discipline Tests are a special type of Characteristic Test and follow their own rules. To perform a Discipline Test,
roll 2D6 and compare the result with the model’s Discipline Characteristic. If the result is less than or equal to the
Discipline value, the test is passed. Otherwise, the test is failed.
