Fantasy Battles: The 9th Age is an independent table top miniature wargame set in a fantasy world, in which players take control of armies and set them upon one another in conflicts ranging from minor skirmishes to mighty battles with hundreds of models.

The game and all of its rules are completely free to download and use, and consist of a main rulebook and over fifteen army documents, ranging from stoic men and noble elves to the feral orcs and dread worshipers of the dark gods. You can easily assemble your own army using appropriate 28mm miniatures from any manufacturer.

Fantasy Battles: The 9th Age has been created by a group of experienced wargamers, a large supportive staff and continuous input from the wargaming community. We aim to provide a competitive, balanced and fun game, with updates and new rules to be released regularly.

We’ve created 16 unique armies from the Dread Elves in the west to the Ogre Khans in the east. Each army has different units and playstyles and can be represented by models from any 28mm model company. People said it was impossible, but we have created a game that is both balanced and fun. Don’t believe us? Try it for yourselves.

    Orison tokens are generated during the Pre-Game Sequence. Orison (X) adds X Orison tokens. Multiple instances of Orison (X) do not stack unless they are written as Orison (+X). At the start of any phase or Round of Combat, one or more Orison Tokens can be used. For each token, choose one friendly non-fleeding unit within 8" of any friendly non-Fleeing model with Orison (X). The chosen unit gains one of the following:

    • Holy Strike: Attack Attribute - Close Combat. Model parts without Harnessed gain +1 to hit.
    • Holy Shield: Personal Protection. Aegis (+1, max. 4+).
    • Holy Wrath: Universal Rule. Fear; any model that already has Fear gains Terror instead.

    Several instances of an effect do not stack. A unit may only gain one Orison effect per phase, unless specifically stated otherwise.

    The model gains +1 Health Point, up to a maximum of 3. At the start of each friendly Magic Phase, the model’s unit, or a model inside the model’s unit, may Raise 1 Health Point with the following restrictions:
    • No single unit can Recover or Raise more than 1 Health Point per Player Turn from this ability.
    • Champions cannot be Raised by Ordo Minister.

    Fountain of Youth (Druidism) cannot target any models in a unit that Recovered or Raised Health Points this way in the same Magic Phase.

The sum of the Gallantry values of all units on theArmy List is restricted to 1 per 650 Army Points, rounding fractions up (this means that e.g. a 4500 pts army cancontain units with a combined Gallantry value of up to 7).

    You might not be aware, that the 2000pt or 2250pt list in 8th edition is equivalent to 4500pts in ninth age. This is really the full sized list.
  • My 2 cents on the minotaur warlord is he needs a bigger price drop for me to consider him again. I may take a GW version now he's cheaper, with the sole job of blocking up tough targets, but that would be a corner case application. Lack of swiftstride
