How the 9th Age works

  • We still see a number of comments and signs that not everyone really understands how the 9th Age project works and how those different project teams work together. Today we like to share some more insides and make it a bit more explicit.

    The Executive Board (ExB)
    The Executive Board is the steering Committee of the 9th Age project. Its responsible for the overall project management.

    How to become an ExB member?
    The traditional "career path" is: RT/AvB -> ExB

    What does the ExB do?
    • Decides over the overall scope and deadlines for the different project development cycles.
    • Defines the tasks and responsibilities of the different project teams.
    • Decides on applications and promotion for the AvB, RT, RTS, BB, ABC and AS project teams.
    • Represents the project towards third parties, such as the ETC, Shop owners, model makers, the media, etc..
    • Decides about project spendings.
    • Responsible for the release of official project publications.
    What does the ExB not do?
    • Does not decide over the 9th Age Rules.
    • Does not decide over the 9th Age Background.

    The Advisory Board (AvB)
    There is literally no discussion or decisions by the Executive Board without the Advisory Board being involved.
    The Advisory Board consults the Executive Board, but does not have direct voting rights in its decisions.
    Besides advising the Executive Board the Advisory Board also supports the project management by taking lead on specific (project management related) tasks defined by the Executive Board.

    How to become an AvB member?
    The traditional "career path" is: AS/TS/RTS -> AvB

    What does the AvB do?
    • Advise the ExB on all project management related topics.
    • Supports the project management by taking lead in specific (project management related) tasks.
    What does the AvB not do?
    • Does not decide over the overall scope and deadlines for the different project development cycles.
    • Does not decide on applications and promotion for the AvB, RT, RTS, BB, ABC and AS project teams.
    • Does not decide about project spendings.

    The Background and Art Team (B&A)
    Supports the 9th Age project by developing Artwork and Background texts for the 9th Age publications. The Background and Art Team works within scope and under the deadlines defined by the Executive Board.

    • Develops the 9th Age World and its Background.
    • Has the last word on the names of units and rules in the 9th Age publications.
    • Responsible for the Artwork of the project.

    • Does not decide about the 9th Age Rules.
    • Does not decide about layout for the 9th Age publications.

    The Review Team (RvT)
    Supports the 9th Age project by helping out with layout, grammar and spelling corrections.

    What does the RvT do?
    • Responsible for proof reading of 9th Age publications.
    • Supports the RT and ABC teams to rephrase unclear rules.
    • Has the last word on spelling and grammar of text used in 9th Age publications.
    • Has the last word on the layout used in 9th Age publications.
    What does the RvT not do?
    • Does not decide about the content of 9th Age Rules.
    • Does not decide about the content of 9th Age Background.

    The Rules-Team (RT)
    The Rules-Teams is responsible for all 9th Age rules. This includes both the BRB, where the Rules-Teams is the main authority, as well as the overall balance of the army books. The Rules-Team works within scope and under the deadlines defined by the Executive Board.

    What does the RT do?
    • Is responsible for all 9th Age rules.
    • Writes the core rules found in the Rulebook and Paths of Magic.
    • Defines the Guild lines rules under which the Armybooks are to be designed.
    • Reviews the Armybooks and has final say about all rules/costs found in the Armybooks.
    What does the RT not do?
    • Has no saying on the project management.
    • Does not decide about the 9th Age Background.

    The Rules-Team Support (RTS)
    Rules-Team Support supports the Rules Team with interacting with the community and Armybook committees

    • Supports the RT on matters of communication both team internal as well as towards the public.
    • Keep the community involved about design choices and reasoning behind it.

    The Balance Board (BB)
    The Balancing Board advices the Rules-Team on terms of internal and external balance.

    • Advise the Rules-Team
    • Review the core rules and Armybooks regarding internal and external balance.
    What does the BB not do?
    • Write Rules and/or Design Armybooks.

    The Armybook Committee (ABC)
    The Armybook Committee is responsible for its respective army book and its rules. As such the Armybook Committee works under the rules and supervision of the Rules-Team.

    What does the ABC do?
    • Designs the rules of the Armybooks following the rules given by the RT.
    • Takes feedback provided by AS/TS and takes them into consideration when designing the rules of the Armybooks.
    • Design-Phase: Takes change requests regarding rules/costs from RT and BB and finds a solution for the problems pointed out.
    • Design-Phase: Proposes rule/cost changes on the Armybooks to the RT for review.
    • Balancing-Phase: Advices the RT and BB on matter concerning the Armybooks internal/external balance.
    • Advises the B&A team concerning the background of the respective army.
    What does the ABC no dot?
    • Does not decide about the Armybook Background.
    • Does not have the final say regarding rule/cost of the respective Armybook.

    The Army Support (AS)
    The Army Support is responsible for the community work for their respective army both on the website as well as on other forums and websites. As such the Army Support works under the guidelines and supervision of the Executive Board. The Army Support consults the Armybook Committee of its respective army and acts both as its spokesman as well as contact person for the community.

    What does the AS do?
    • Listen to what the community has to say and report their findings to RT/ABC
    • Represent the project towards the respective army specific community.
    • Keeps the community involved about design choices and reasoning behind it regarding the respective army.
    • Moderates the respective army specific sub-forum.
    • Advises the B&A team concerning the background of the respective army.

    The Tournament Support (TS)
    The Tournament Support is responsible to keep contact with tournament organizers running 9th Age tournament and coordinated support for and by the 9th Age project.

    What does the TS do?
    • Gets in touch with tournament organizers.
    • Tries to get as much relevant tournament data (defined by Data Analyst and Balance Board) as possible.
    • Keeps the 9th Age tournament calendar up to date.
    • Supports local tournaments and tournament organizers.
