  • Quote from Fnarrr: “Of course not No one wants to get under average for their army at ETC, and Furion is screwing with the averages! Best option for every one of the 10 HbE attending is "I do well, other 9 guys do bad, I'm awesome AND my army gets buffs" ” "Intrigue at Court" in action!

  • Quote from Harlequin: “After all I can only agree to this post. The problem was maybe a bit the power level but more the iconic units for Wood Elves. At least for me. I started to play these guys 20 years ago because of Wardancers and Waywatchers. 9th Age summed this up to be a more generalized chess-like system for competitive play. ” I've seen several people say things like this recently, and I don't really understand it. Pathfinders I understand, they're overpriced and horrendously squishy in…

  • Quote from Peacemaker: “This isn't quite true. It changes what enemy units they are more vulnerable to. I has everything to do with role specializations.Small subtleties in the rules that have this kind of effect is what makes T9A different then Kings of War or Age of Sigmar where those games are literally rolling 3/4+ to hit then 3/4+ to wound which very few ways to impact those rolls. ” Well designed special rules CAN have that effect, however, when simple attribute changes could achieve the d…

  • Quote from umbranar: “Quote from xciccox: “Elves are supposed be fast and agile...so what about give them distracting in cc? And no armor special rules? ” I am guessing they have Lightning Reflexes, high OS and DS and Agi to show that. ” This is an old argument. None of those really make them difficult to kill, so we end up with a race who are supposed to have a high regard for their own lives, but fight like berserkers, killing easily and dying even easier. High DS (and most elves have DS 4, or…

  • Quote from WhammeWhamme: “Secondly... if we can't thread the needle and make elite units that AREN'T S4 R4 and wearing plate, all our elite infantry units are going to feel really darn similar. So yes, the DE team has to find a way to make the armour "feel better" mechanically. Hopefully they're up to the task. Not seeing the problem here? ” That just means making special rules to achieve a similar net effect to simply giving them S/R4 or 3+/4+ AS. They end up different on paper, but in reality,…

  • SE do the most unorthodox battlelines going. A few 15-18 strong FG units, then several BD units and FR units, chuck in some banners of speed, relentless company, a banner of deception etc. Master Shaman. Some Heathriders with Silent mist to disrupt march and reforms. It's a battleline which can completely redeploy before the second turn and change the shape of the battle right from the start, forcing an opponent to lose a couple of turns repositioning, and potentially pull off some smaller redep…

  • Quote from MountainBuns: ““DE defensive abilities are often tailored to their close quarter fighting theme. For example close combat centric special saves and avoiding to-be hit at (very) short range or in close combat could be themes for DE defensive capabilities. Any defensive capabilities above normal elven standards should clearly follow this theme.“ In my opinion a lack of ranged defensive capabilities reduces the tactical allure of the army by forcing us to engage the first combat we can g…

  • Quote from Calisson: “The way DE was described in the old times was "pick up your fights". Happy to see DE set to become the emblematic faction of MSU, but will we get enough maneuvering to be able to avoid unwanted combats? The DE art of war, perfected by generations of players, was to use MSU to avoid engaging the opponent's death star while destroying all its other units. I wonder how it becomes in the guidelines: "Lateral movement is decent in (some) shooty units, but limited in combat units…

  • I think what a lot of people here are getting at is that the army needs to be able to spend a few turns maneuvering to set up good charges with multiple units, not just rush forward and charge as soon as possible to get through the shooting etc. I think these guidelines leave room for that. You can be vulnerable to ranged damage but still have ways to mitigate it, they just need to be somewhat skill based rather than flat bonuses against ranged damage. Things like short ranged protection for fas…

  • Quote from Wesser: “ It's because BsB is so powerful, but as you also need a General and perhaps a dedicated Wizard (though combining the above is possible) it's suddenly a lot of points on characters. The simple truth is that combat characters (especially the more middling ones like elves) need to do something for their unit. If Hunter's Honour didn't exist would Forest Guard kindred ever be played? Consider what would happen if Hunter's Honour was lowered to say.. 50 points, but was disallowed…

  • Quote from cptcosmic: “Quote from CariadocThorne: “While Ironic, might not be as bizarre as it seems. Some SE players are switching to DE because "guerilla" SE is not in a great place atm, and players feel forced to use Dryad and Thicket Beast blocks. ” the way most want to play "guerilla" just does not work in this game imho and I think it will never do. you have to have a strong centerpiece that zones to make room for your army. SE can do that with a dragon though but I think that is not what …

  • Quote from Adam: “Quote from Kimara_Online: “We need something new to make people exited to play hbe again. And we need a change gurilla army to phalanx spesialists ” Quote from Kimara_Online: “So long, you are all like middleaged women crying over a self impossed diett. Ill go play my hbe as sylvan elves, only downside is that my lion cloaked lord will have to to ride his lion (great stag) with an elvencloak. And my lionguard will have to work around -1s with their 2 attacks. Cya again in a cou…

  • As for Kindreds, I like the current system, but I think it needs to change. The problem is not really the kindreds itself, but more that hero level combat characters in some armies (all 3 elven armies suffer this to some extent) no longer have much of a role outside of BSB. For SE this means we get some PF chieftains, and usually a BSB, but other than that, people tend to go for the extra hitting power of a Prince for all their characters. In the homebrew I'm currently working on, I have address…

  • Quote from Galdenos: “Sorry to ask but ... Why are we discussing DE in the SE forum ? :o ” Because the relationship between the 3 elven factions means that the DE guidelines could have serious implications for SE. For example, the guidelines discuss DE havinng a focus on mobile short-range shooting to differentiate them from HE and SE. Except SE shooting is also mobile, and while it has decent range, it is only really strong at short range, so there is a significant overlap there. Realistically,…

  • Hi guys, please have a look at the preliminary DE LAB. Dread Elves LAB Design guidelines Feedback thread Come back and leave your feedback here please.

  • Quote from AlexCat: “Quote from arwaker: “Therefore the only option is to assume similar skill distributions among all armies. This might in reality not be the case, and strong players might be the reason that their army appears better that it really is. This is unfortunate. But the good news is, that with large numbers of games and players in the analysis, this effect is getting smaller and smaller, it is falling below the statistical noise. ” And what about bandwagon effect? Many players switc…

  • Quote from Phaeoron: “Excuse my spitballing, but... How about we come back to the idea of a sylvan bow? 24" range, the same 15" for short range as sylvan longbow. Archers: the only unit with sylvan longbow, the only rnf shooter. As is now. Sentinel: sylvan bow, option for great weapon, poison arrows, scout, skirmish. Pathfnders: sylvan bow, arcane bodkins (ap arrows), scout, skirmish, syl blades, caltrops (once per game, when pf declare a stand and shoot reaction, the charging unit treats all te…

  • Quote from DanT: “I don't disagree exactly, and I think what you are saying here has much merit. However, my observations over the past 20years are that the blockier the game, the harsher the curbs on avoidance need to be. If everyone is pushed more towards blocks, avoidance gets naturally stronger, because that is what it is good against. Just an observation to be aware of, not saying it cannot be worked around. ” I agree completely. This is why I think that SE players have to accept a trade-of…

  • Quote from DanT: “Quote from Hachiman Taro: “Rather than treating SE as an insoluble problem it might be more productive to flip the script and embrace the idea of a game that embraces diverse and interesting playstyles. *shrugs* I was just pointing out how things are, I was making no judgements about how they should be. I personally don't believe it is insoluble, and I actually think we aren't far off. Nonetheless, conceptually SE (and any other army that is conceptually not block based) is a p…

  • Quote from DanT: “Quote from CariadocThorne: “Personally I'm less worried about the number of SE lists than what units they contain. I don't believe that SE are "underpowered" in terms of external balance, at least not significantly, but I do think there we have some significant internal balance issues, particularly with FG/FR vs Dryads and Thicket beasts. ” And is teams data the right place to look for this...?*shrugs*... I'm not saying it is or it isn't. Merely that different individual/sub-fo…
