  • So looking at the actual year to year SE ETC data: 1) The number of SE players basically halved from ETC 2018 to ETC 2019 (from 21 to 11). 2) The units that were identified as problematic in terms of pick rates by the SE ACS pre and post ETC 2018 have remained so, and generally the areas of concern have ben exacerbated in this data: - Dryads remain extremely ubiquitously selected (picked in 90%+ of SE lists, the most of any unit by a significant margin), often in small units. - Thicket Beasts (p…

  • Quote from franmann: “I find it really interesting that all elven armies are the least represented in ETC, but the top team (Poland) has all of them. ” I do find that really interesting too. It'll be even more interesting to see how they play and what they get out of them. Hopefully there's some nice lessons to learn from it. For now, while it feels like there are a few things that it would be really nice to be able to go in and fix yesterday, it's also good that the book seems like it can be pl…

  • Quote from Just_Flo: “I am sorry I dont grasp the point of info in the memo. ” It tells you how some players feel about things in a particular moment. Like when I was listening to a podcast a few weeks ago and they were discussing how they thought Pyromancy was a really good Path. Then someone mentioned playing it against SE, and everyone on the podcast just broke into spontaneous laughter for a few seconds, and made no other comment. It's not a data point you can easily plot on a graph, but it …

  • If I thought someone was incapable of recognising their own biases, I likely wouldnt bother pointing them out to them. My experience is that a PHD isnt a vaccine from bias though (I know a decent amount of scientists). In fact outside ones field particularly, it can even be a hinderance. Both the Polish list you pointed out and the meme you didn't like are similar in a way though. They're anecdotal information that could be useful upon further investigation. The truth is somewhere in the middle.

  • Quote from DanT: “Assuming I haven't failed at basic reading, Polish SE with no trees is pretty fascinating... ” Quote from DanT: “Quote from Snajper: “fine.jpg ” I love nuanced comments about the complexities of interpreting the data. They are my favourite forum posts. Perhaps you could share your robust analysis methodology that leads you to having such faith in your conclusions? ” To be fair, 'look one player in a good team took something different' isn't exactly a robust methodology either. B…

  • Or conversely "DE really would suit having this thing that isnt emphasised enough"

  • Quote from msu117: “Beat me to it somewhat @Hachiman Taro Feel free to comment on any aspect of the guidelines but also I would love to hear any high level discussion on the merits of the SE Kindreds system or negatives and compare those with the current DE Cult system and suggestions to improve upon the DE system and keep it unique Please don't focus on current game balance specifics, simply the system with which to differentiate characters, fluff, look and feel to army. ” One thing in regard t…

  • Overall I feel like it's pretty good. I like making Cults feel more like a bonus than a restriction. I like that there seems to be deliberate spaces left we fit into with lateral movement, longer range light shooting etc, and spaces we equally don't invade too much - mti monster mashes etc

  • Kestrel Knights

Hachiman Taro - - Sylvan Elves (SE)

    Post

I think Kestrels are an excellent unit (wish the points were better balanced between the shield ones and the bow ones is all). Their big strength is in their movement though, you have to be exploiting that to get favourable fights I think rather than taking main combat units head on. They'll lose if you just charge them at things that are less mobile but more fighty.

  • Quote from DanT: “Sorry, I've been away for a (very busy) weekend.I don't really understand what this is about anymore. Is there an answer wanted or expected off me? ” No.

  • Quote from DanT: “Quote from Hachiman Taro: “Quote from DanT: “Quote from Hachiman Taro: “That's not the case for all things though. It seems likely there's a cognitive bias at work in the minds of very skilled players of this game (like you and danT) though. Because very skilled players can take most things and do fairly well with them, that gives the impression that everying is more or less balanced, whether that is true or not. ” I think you are assuming some things here.Things like: me (or o…

  • Quote from DanT: “Quote from Alexwellace: “to me it's looked like there's always been a little bit of tension between the rules of the overall project and the SE book and there are cases we've suffered from that. ” This is kinda right and kinda wrong.Other books can claim similar examples to yours, albeit perhaps not as many or of such import. The correct statement is that there is tension between "SE" and "rank and file battle game"; it was no different in legacy days. I think this is a highly …

  • Quote from SmithF: “Re: magic items Frequently present: Hunter's Honor Curse of the Black Stag Banner of Deception Banner of Silent Mist Hail Shot Rarely present: Spirit of the Whirlwind Predator Pennant Sacred Seeds Glyph of Amryl Almost never/never present: Bough of Wyscan Lifeseed Feathers Shielding Bark Mist Walker's Mirror Horn of the Wild Hunt Drums of Cenyrn I've tried to explain the "never present" category, and I think that this is due to needing to base your list on said items/combos f…

  • I can see the rules loophole argument, but personally I find it kind of evocative. Undead things thing is kinda coming back until you find a way around it Given it's counterable I dont find it too problematic. I feel like its intructive though that something a lot of players find a downside intuitively has been skillfully used by one player as a strong feature to score well. Combined with Druidism, it might not even be too different to how the deadites use it against us. Perhaps theres a lesson …

  • Thematic restrictions / variations based around seasons is a cool idea given how many SE armies are season themed

  • I'd be ok losing Break the Spirit on Briar Maidens for a witchcraft spell after considering it. If you want to do that you take a Shamanism Druid, especially since you can't cast it twice, illustrating that one of the reasons Briar Maiden Conclaves don't get taken these days - they don't have a non redundant distinct role anymore. That and / or Truth of time would both be Ok to swap IMHO. Master of Earth has more of the kind of Duality I think suits them (healing and hurting at once) though real…

  • I mean if your personal image of a witch is just a crooked nosed crone in black, sure that probably references more closely to DE than SE. But it's hard to deny there's a lot more to witches historically and culturally than that, even the wicked witch of the west is matched with Glinda the good witch, white witches (say in Narnia) are common, Galadriel is directly referred to as a witch in Lord of the Rings (the movies at least). Maleficent in the recent movie is another example that's pretty SE…

  • I mean it's just that fay / elven woods / wild witches appear in myths and literature from prehistory (circe) , to celtic germanic and norse western fantasy literature sources strony rely on, consistently and commonly all the way to popular modern fantasy (including Tolkien (Galadriel) and Game of Thrones (children of the forest)). And if the common GW models used for Briar Maidens dont look like witches not much does, if you're being at all fair. I just don't really see how there's a reasonable…

  • Who's talking about SE being more witchy than DE?
