Calcathin - - Highborn Elves (HE)

    Post

Quote from arwaker: “every list has Elein Reavers. They seem to be very important for HE. ” Well, it’s light cavalry in core with a clear needed role for the army and a good core-point rounder at 180pts. Once you add two units of Sea Guard / Spears/ Lancers you generally only have around 170-180pts left were Reavers fit nicely and, instead, minsized Spears/Lancers would bring you around 70pts above min core.

  • Quote from pazda_pl: “Quote from Kopistar: “i assume it also depends of the price. Diadem vs talisman of shielding + basalt ? ” Exactly, price is 10pts less on talisman+basalt, because I dont take dragon armour then.Quote from faramir: “4+ 4++ over 3+ 5++ every day, the amount of AP these days is too damn high! Plus a canonball doesn't care about your armour... ” Aginst cannons, probably the best plan, is to hide it any way, for the time when there is none ” dragonforged gives 2++ vs fire instead…

  • Quote from AlexCat: “Quote from Fnarrr: “Quote from AlexCat: “Mine is based around ETC first and foremost. ” ETC itself prevents some of the effects of bandwagonsIf the teams were 16 people strong, there wouldn't be any ” And promotes others.C'mon, look at the armies representation from year to year. If we could make a graph with HBE and UD numbers at the ETC for the last 3 years... my argument would get more ground. ” @arwaker is that a relatively simple thing to check with the information you …

  • @Furion For the centre hole: Make a small unit filler (20mm size for infantry) that you always place in that centre slot which “acts” as a pen slider (has a hole to introduce the pen through) . So no need to remove a miniature and you can make it look good. - Pros: looks good and can be integrated in any unit & don't need to lift models every time - Cons: in a number of cases you will still need to lift the unit because there will be obstacle/units preventing the rotation(*) (*) you will be able…

  • Quote from Adam: “Quote from sparkytrypod: “Question: in players opinions is it the spear that's keeping HBE somewhat competitive? If that was removed how would lists fare/look like? ” Spear, Hered, Moct imho these are the crutches keeping army somewhat in shape ” I’d add the combination of divination asfad master + RBT to that mix, as a ranged answer to quite a lot of threats the army otherwise struggles to deal with if it reaches CC. That is, since our Army doesn’t work that well in the aggres…

  • @faramir note the Irony in @AlexCat post

  • @Henrypmiller To your point on the design changes (assuming many others could be fixed by price): The below are “simple” ideas aiming for minimum design changes to fix some army options which were updated during the 2.0 journey. If anything, these are likely the only types of change which I believe could be allowed at this stage: - Ryma banner to not be restricted to R&F. Also, remove the restiction by which cavalry gets the short end of the stick with this banner [either gets also the +1 Ad…

  • Quote from Fnarrr: “Quote from Calcathin: “On Ranged vs combat spells balance topix: if hereditary was a ranged spell it would make MoCT even better/more versatile than it is now. I don’t think that’d be good for internal balance. Instead, option for a Pathmaster item for adepts / ranged boundspell items / wizard conclave with ranged damage would be a better approach since it would give that option to other entries in the book ” You can offer whatever carrots you like elsewhere in the book, but …

  • @Fnarrr on MoCT with BoAP topic: where i’m getting at is that you need to do further investments which are not black&white. Otherwise it is very unlikely you’ll risk 2-dice in an important phase. In that example you gave, you’d be investing 100pts in order to take advantage of this -1CV. So, not free at all, and debatable on whether it’s worth it over other options. In my view, that is a good outcome On Ranged vs combat spells balance topix: if hereditary was a ranged spell it would make MoCT ev…

  • Quote from Fnarrr: “Quote from DanT: “(B) If it were removed, HBE players would be disappointed in comparison by whatever it were replaced with. ” I would be disappointed by any other combat Hereditary, but its worth noting that given no other changes I think would take the SA spell over ours - the MoCT is geared towards combat buffs, and Cosmo and Div have a slight slant that way as well (especially considering Drain Magic comes with Asfad). The only time you may really want a combat Hereditary…

  • Quote from DanT: “Quote from Calcathin: “A) Personally, I don’t think a change to 9+ CV would have such a meaningful impact, specially since the spell is not repeatable. From 10+ to 9+ most times you’ll use same number of dice. Primarily, it would mitigate failed cast probability, which I think is good to reduce “bad luck” feeling and would be a welcome change. 2-dicing would be a bit more achievable but still quite a risk for a BoM master or a BoAP adept. So, overall, going from 10+ to 9+ is mo…

  • Quote from DanT: “Nonetheless, I would make the following predictions for hypothetical scenarios (which are unlikely to manifest): (A) If the CV were reduced, the external power level of the book would change non-negligibly, over time ultimately resulting (non-directly, before anyone objects ) in higher prices than in a parallel universe where the CV had not been decreased. (B) If it were removed, HBE players would be disappointed in comparison by whatever it were replaced with. ” B) Fully agree…

  • Quote from Adam: “@DanT I would take this position if it came with some cool badge like "Herald of the throne" or something ” As you can see from my badge, such things are possible. You first need to earn it though

  • Quote from Giladis: “HE are supposed to be good at speed not manouverbility. While HE will be more manouverbale than most other armies with lover Advance and March rates they should be inferior to other elves, especial Sylvan. Getting access to 3 flying monsters gives an army a lot of manouvrable hitting power. And let us not bring cost into this as it temporary and will eventually reach the sweet spot. ” You can achieve this in the Standard elf rules, so that R&F elven model parts are diffe…

  • @Teowulff even if he regains a wound, you’ve still caused 3 from a CR point of view. I don’t think its “reliable” in the sense of “nearly guaranteed” but rather a “reasonably good chance” You’re totally dependant on getting the charge though: to buff yourself in magic, have the +1 CR for charging and, if you get stuck, to have the one-off trigger from Nova still available in next round.

  • @Jarek If you're looking at beating it in combat, the Nova Flare Griffon mentioned by @TTGH is a good bet if you get to charge ( a reasonable assumption ). It averages 3.2W on the charge, plus an extra potential around 1W if you get an offensive spell through. You should be getting under 1W back on average and win combat by 4 (3+1) Does that look as good enough odds ?

  • Quote from Trains_get_robbed: “I only disagree on the RHC and Helm. The Helm should be a Shield enchantment as well opening up the ability to get a +2 AS for hefty +50-55 point investment, but taking up two armor slots. Continuing; no one takes the Chariot as is, and frankly it could be cheaper. ” Thank you. On the Helm, I agree with you and would be a really easily option to implement. Also a +1AS with additional +1AS vs magical. However the assumption on my post was “only price changes”. On th…

  • Quote from arwaker: “I think a naked commander with great weapon is a nice addendum for a spear block, because he provides some valuable S6 attacks to a unit that hardly can wound opponents with T5+. He has a cheapish block where shooting is less valuable against than into swordmasters. I don't think it makes much sense to put him into elite infantry, because those already have higher Str, and he pushes away one of those models from the frontline. ” Do you really think that is worth an investmen…

  • Quote from arwaker: “Just to confirm what is the topic: Nearly all HE commanders have a honor. The wish is to reduce the basic price of commanders, and increase the price of all his available honors by the same value. Do I understand your wish correctly? ” Yes, but you may look to increase the cost only for the honours which actually get taken, so it increases internal balance. Even in that case you may still be looking to lower cost of HWotF, Fleet Officer and Queen’s Cavalier honours. Same app…

  • Quote from Furion: “Quote from Edhelnaur: “Quote from Furion: “you overpaid for magic around 600 points. Book of Meladys for 140, Book of Arcane power for 80 Asfad for 200 Extra mage for 300 The fact you won vs dwarves (which is a very tough matchup) was most likely influenced by player skill and terrain. Still, well done winning 3900 vs 4500. ” Can you explain me this ? i don't understand the point you gave to all of this. Book isn't 100 ? Book 60 and Asfad 90 ? is this a rhetorical thing in en…
