  • Greetings Forest Born; With the current world wide situation making it difficult to get games in against the new ID army book we are currently collecting feedback from the community about any options available to a SE army to counter an ID army or its units. Which units, character options, and tactics can we use to lay low these fiery fiends? Please avoid any discussions in this thread beyond ways a SE player can counter an ID army, use this thread for any other feedback you wish to give regardi…

  • One concept I have been experimenting with in my personal homebrew is a change to Master Archer: Instead having the best of both worlds (Either +2 to-hit or +2 AP) I changed it to simply be +1 AP & Lethal Strike. I then added Accurate to Pathfinders and removed Sylvan Sentinels entirely. So instead of trying to balance two separate skirmishing archer unit entries you have a single unit that fills the role of both. This version of Pathfinders isn't as effective vs their current targets, reducing …

  • Quote from Giladis: “Quote from CariadocThorne: “Any background you could share on the nature of the relationship between the Forest Spirits and the Elves would be appreciated. ” Imagine an elf lives in his house, the house is nice and when the conditions are right a wild cat sometimes comes inside causing bedlam, but just as quickly leaves. Then one day there is a vicious storm and the cat is thrown by the wind through your window net into your living room. The cat is bewildered, wet and cold s…

  • Quote from Alexwellace: “@funkyfellow views things in exactly the way I'd like to see the book. My heart bounces, selfishly and perhaps in jealousy, at seeing this thinking in the position of Sylvan ACS When I get some time post-exams I'll take a look at the Homebrew Full Army book you've got there in the signature, I expect great things! The only thing I disagree with you about is the temperament of the Forest Spirits, as I've always preferred the Forest Spirits to be suggestive of a Hive Mind …

  • Quote from DanT: “I have pondered a few times what I would do with SE. I've just put out my EoD mk1 homebrew (see sig), and this thread got me thinking about SE again, and maybe doing an SE homebrew. Here is a question for everyone that I feel I've never had satisfactorily answered by all the fluff I've read in more than 20 years: I get how SE fight in forests, particularly ambushes and smaller scales. How do they fight in a (big) more conventional battle? (I'm thinking fluff/imagination, not me…

  • Quote from Fleshbeast: “What are everyone’s thoughts on the Lammassu Scholar (or whatever it’s name is) with the two spells face down and reveal after dispel attempt? I don’t like it and will be home-ruling it out when I play casually. Just seems like an unnecessary change to a core mechanic. Keen to get an item which just removes the opponent’s magic phase entirely in future. ” Personally Riddle of the Lammassu was my favourite new rule in the whole LAB, I really love the flavour and I feel som…

  • Greetings Forest Born; As I am sure nearly all of you are aware the masters of the Infernal Dwarfs have seen fit to release their LAB unto the masses. We would love to hear your thoughts regarding the following about 9th Age's fiery new LAB: - The flavour and Background material. - The complexity of the army book. - The balance concerns you may have. - If you have played games vs the new book, your impressions from those games. - Other opinions about the new book you may have. As always please t…

One possible direction the project could explore come time for a LAB is removing the option for a Bsb from the book and giving SE units an alternative for re-rolling Disicpline Tests. My personal favourite would be if SE units re-rolled discipline when within 6" of a Forest. It makes Treesinging a lot more interesting for the army and adds some interesting counter play to games as well as greater importance to options like Sacred Seeds & the Hereditary Spell. Such a system could even be further …

Even split between any Elf with a Bow & Treefathers. My personal favourite unit are the Wild Huntsmen being led by the King in the Woods which I never left home without back in the old days.

As someone who plays both SE & HE I find the characters section for both to be about the same balance-wise from my own experience. They both tend to have a few builds that are commonly seen and are well worth their points cost as well as a handful of niche builds with some weird restrictions that you might see the odd time every now and then. A SE character is designed to operate differently from an HE character and I find they each perform vital but different functions for their respective armi…

  • Quote from CariadocThorne: “Quote from Giladis: “The latest Scroll has a preview of the thought direction of for two DE characters. the-ninth-age.com/community/fi…-issue-20-march-1st-2020/ Maybe you can draw some inspiration from it for SE ” I like them both, but I was just wondering whether there is a change of direction here. The Manslayer looks like a powerful individual fighter, so I was wondering whether this means a relaxation of the previous separation of character roles between the elven…

  • I really digged the new cover style, another great issue guys! @Henrypmiller Would you mind sharing the name of the dragon model that you used in the painting flames tutorial and where you got it from? I'd love to pick one up for my samurai army (counts as HE). Cheers!

  • Quote from Giladis: “The latest Scroll has a preview of the thought direction of for two DE characters. the-ninth-age.com/community/fi…-issue-20-march-1st-2020/ Maybe you can draw some inspiration from it for SE ” Personally I have long desired for a Wizard's chosen Path of Magic to affect the model's profile or add some kind of ability, so that alone makes me love the concept, cool stuff!

  • I also personally lean more towards focussing on the "fey" theme for nature spirits over the 4 elements style. I feel the mythology of the 4 elements fits Greco Roman themed factions a bit better than the traditionally more Gaelic/Celtic SE. That being said the idea certainly does have merit and there are ways the two themes could be married together. Having unit entries/upgrades that represent the following could fit both flavours; Earth - Gnomes, Spriggans Water - Undines, Nymphs, Selkies Air …

  • Quote from CariadocThorne: “Warning! Rambling thoughts ahead! One of the things in particular I was looking at with my design was that so far all the Forest Spirits are tree-themed, which is fine and fitting and all seeing as trees are kind of the defining feature of a forest . However, they are Forest Spirits, not Tree spirits, while the AoN is an Avatar of Nature, and both forests and nature contain more than just trees. Nature themes could include the classic 4 natural elements, Earth, Air, F…

  • Hi all; I just saw the posting for this competition, here is a unit entry from the Sylvan Elves home brew in my signature: Sylvan Elves the-ninth-age.com/community/ga…868d5948ee9aa225c3b3c10aa 72089_storm_raptor.jpg Storm Raptor - Privateer Press 77946_Roc.jpg Grimtalon Deluxe Boxed Set - Reaper Miniatures The intent is to replace the dragon with a more nature themed monster as the centerpiece mount for the army, leaving dragons to other races such as HE. The homebrew adds a Dragonfey mount (and…

  • Updated the Homebrew to 2.2.5 The biggest change in this update was the addition of Supernal to many of the Sylvan Spirits. While working on this homebrew's first supplement it became clear that it would need to be able to draw on Supernal-like units from the base book as well as it's own faction specific units. It was an addition I was hesitant to experiment with in the past because it has many complex and difficult to balance interactions with the rest of the army. The reasoning behind not giv…

  • Quote from Henrypmiller: “How would people feel about reducing the range of the sylvan bow? It could be 24" range, but short range is 15" or something similar. I quite like how it works now but im just curious. ” For a change like that to work the army would need to acquire some new sources of long range shooting I believe. I find SE already have a hard time against armies with easy access to 30" shooting. As mentioned by others such a change would have a strong knockoff effect for elven combat …

  • A lot of players in my area have SE armies but traditionally only a few of us bring them out to events. I am told by many of these players its because they are unsure of how to properly use the army against a variety of opponents in a competitive setting. Those of us that do bring SE tend to do quite well though, but I think this partially because of a favourable meta. There's been a big slowdown of events since the last update due to the holidays so it's difficult to see where things are at in …

  • SE 2019 final update

Here are some tactics I find very useful for SE when up against armies that out-shoot them on paper. If I get to choose deployment I try and give my opponent the side with some impassable terrain to gum up their lines. Crowding their units closer together makes it easier for me to take advantage of LoS shenigans. Depending on the layout this can even allow me to isolate and take down a portion of my opponents army before they can respond. Deploying out of range of my opponents shooting units if …
