  • as long as we agree they can be fun. They aren't the most efficient units, and if you really wanted a mounted force of colourful knights they may not be in theme. I am sure when the FAB happens tons of discussion as to their role will rightly come up and play out, which is cool. I was just a little confused by the rhetoric concerning their uselessness. I enjoy using them even if they aren't top tier.

  • When I play KoE... I use peasants. I like them as they feel to me like cheap, 100% expendable chaff. While it is true that EoS heavy infantry have access to special rules that let them perform better wound for wound than peasants... They are base 10pts each instead of 7pts each for peasants.... For 210pts you can get 30 peasants with spears or halberds and a musician. Sure they have goblin stats, but you only pay goblin pts for them. Put them in line formation and you get 24 or 30 attacks that c…

  • Meaning the GTA and Montreal, and meet in the Middle in Ottawa?

  • Ah, I see. The thing is, out here on the East Coast, a 3 hour drive to Oshawa isn't an option. The CTC is a big sponsored event, there seemed to be lots of stuff going on in general, so taking a long weekend to hop on a plane and play some toy soldiers at the "Premier Canadian Tabletop Games Event" seemed like a good idea. I don't know if I can muster the same enthusiasm and cash frankly to fly to Oshawa. Even if my Dad grew up there. True Story. Oshawa of all places.

  • 1st weekend of May If I was driving, I would offer to bring a bucket of terrain, but the plan was to fly...

Yes, but that assumes that your 20 heavy infantry flanker suffers no wounds in the combat. Lose one model and the Rank bonus goes to 2+ not 3+, and you gave up the wound. Heavy Cavalry at least have 1+ armour saves so don't give up combat resolution as easily. That said, I don't think Knights should be support detachments to infantry.

  • Hi Fellow Canadian 9th age players. I am told that there is no one organizing the 9th Age at the CTC this year, in part because there was not enough interest or participation last year. Just shouting out in to the coid here, but was anyone interested in having 9th Age at this premier event? I am physically in Halifax so I can't really offer to organize, but I am willing to help in whatever remote capacity I can... is there any interest out here in internet land? Anyone in the Ottawa area? Just d…

  • A few thoughts. They may wander, blame my adult ADD. 1 there is a saying in military history / studies - “amateurs study tactics, professionals study logistics” in part because until the 20th century more soldiers died of disease and malnutrition than combat... pretty much the world over. 2 I have played a fair amount of 40k lately because my kids like to play and to paint space marines. I have been tricked in to joining and helping them. I like the setting, I like the models, I like the terrain…

That is a few things you are assuming there. 1 that the support unit has hand weapon and shield, not spears, halberds, xbows or handguns. 2 that the support charge can find and get to a flank, which against a competent opponent does not often occur. 3 that opponents with 2 or more attacks are rare. if I could line up a supporting charge with parry in a 1 attack enemy’s flank, I would already be taking it anyway. Much more often the opportunity available is to charge the front facing of an enemy …

Hi @DanT / well now that you have added a bonus for the counter and support charges... wow. Yes those are real bonuses. The ability to negate impact hits would actually make you choose whether to stand and shoot or declare a counter charge with a shooting support unit. Cool. The -1 A for a support charge would coax you in to charging in with a support unit that would normally just be adding to the enemies combat resolution by dying. Nice use of the design space. housekeeping note you still have …

Fair, but you are removing the cavalry pick option from the last version, so I didn't think of it as an overload... but I understand your desire to simplify. So, from a rules point of view counts as halberd is A-OK. While on that note, I think that the Big flying monster entry in lieu of the 'Dragon' is a perfect solution. Model it as you please. Just make sure it is big, scary, winged or obviously flying, and has a human on top. Done.

If the IG can take Halberds, the loss of the Lightning Reflexes actually makes more sense, so that now there are 3 options... HW+S - Parry bonus, Strength 4, Arm 4, agi 3 OR Halberds, Strength 5, Arm 3, agi 3 OR Great Weapons, Strength 6, Arm 3, agi 0 You can have 'Best' defense at St. 4, 'worst' defense at St. 6, or compromise 'mid' defense at St. 5. I wish the GW & Halb versions could get shields for ranged defense, but can't win them all. Now as much as I love Halberds on IG infantry, I am le…

Overall interesting options in the new list you propose. Couple thoughts. So the Support units lose the fight in extra rank base advantage, but now get free orders from nearby parent units. Certainly this will promote more use of parent support. Combined with the painful Motley crew rule, militia are out and light infantry are back in for me. The unwieldy problem is now solved by an order, and the orders for accurate etc. are now more plentiful, so the eliteness of the militia takes a huge hit, …

  • You aren't wrong about the subset of folks in KoE.

  • Thanks Dan. I am not looking for an easy button. Just trying to see if we are talking about the same stuff. If you define MMU by points value not model count then OK. By that criteria, I play MMU as well... 2 blocks of 40 halberds, lots of toys in support, 30 Imperial guard. If you don't have 80+ heavy infantry are you a serious EoS Player? I am not going to demonstrate for the Court by showing on this Doll where the Bad WotDG list touched me... but it was not a gentle touch. I don't hate the Eo…

  • Alright Dan... that was well worked out. I do agree that your proposed guidelines are almost describing what we have now. my issue is that those guidelines talked a lot more about what EoS is not good at, and not “all about“, than it did about what it is good at. I note that you think EoS should get some help in the artillery department. Good, because as the army currently stands it is in need of help to not suck. (This is Meta dependant too I suppose, suffice to say in my meta it sucks) That an…

  • Ok, I will admit I am curious. What does a top tournament EoS list look like? What is the secret sauce of synergy magic that I am missing? not being condescending or sarcastic, I am genuinely curious about what the choices in the army look like at the nominal top of the curve? I understand that unsupported Imperial guard are not the best thing ever... but I have seen them used in tournament play, presumably at the higher end of things, so what changes in the composition at the high end? I have t…

  • I am not against magic and priests or the occasional fantasy beast. It is just that when looking for a theme or vision for the army I tend to lean towards ‘normal’ un enhanced people dealing with a crazy fantasy world, and doing the best they can. I own (or have passed down to my kids in the hopes they might paint them) EoS, KoE, HBE, SE, DH, ID, OnG, UD and SA. Most of these have really high amounts of high fantasy elements. Loads of monsters and magic and pointy ears. Some work best with inter…
