  • It really is a great excercise! I think the Sylvan book in particular is so fun to homebrew because the units we have right now, is almost perfect. All we need is a bit more of a army wide directional shift towards guerrilla combat/short ranged warfare and a few fluff driven changes. Essentially the book is a fun to work with, because we’re almost there. I’d like to make an argument to you against separating kindreds into character options, not saying either is right , but I’ll run the other sid…

  • Is there a specific reason for it being a Vampire Courtier (the hero version, 100pts of magic items) and not a Vampire Count (the lord level, 200pts of magic items)? The Courtiers tend to have problems buying proper defensive kit while keeping offence due to low allowance, especially on foot. I'd say a Count is far more in the league of Iron Orc Warboss, Great Kharns and High Princes already displayed in the game.

  • When the LAB is being made, we should be thinking of things from a design space rather than a balance point of view. Say Rangers are good right now, and Treefathers aren't. When the LAB is made, Treefathers will almost definately keep the design space of large tree monster, tough with limited mobility. Rangers on the other hand don't have as much of a design identity, as relatively fast-ish great-weapon elves. But what's their clear design role? Are they anti-monster, due to Fearless? Are they a…

  • I'm not sure if I should've posted the full list since the tournament is still in play, but the flies had champions (I assume to make use of clensing flame) and Unhinging Jaw while the scourge had some defensive kit in Brimstones and Chitinous Scales. I'm certain the list could play with Blazing Glories w/ Cloven Hooves instead of Bloat Flies, but it'd probably play noticeably differently. Would probably use it to get Withering Vapours on the Scourge or kit out the Horde Threshers.

Does anyone remember when the Scourge and Bloat Flies were considered so bad as to be unusable and never taken? Nope, me neither Good core internal balance. All 3 of our monstrous special units (Hoarders, Brazens, Clawed Fiends) taken. Chariots and Glories and Flies and Hellhounds (who seem to have found a place as a cheap combat unit, rather than chaff) of all descriptions all over the place. All 3 of our dedicated chaff pieces being used for different reasons. Eidolons and Hope Harvesters seei…

  • A list caught my attention in a UB tournement that occurred this weekend as being particularly fun, enjoyable and very daemon-y. It used a Evo adept Scourge and Sentinel (Dark Pulpit) on Thuam w/ Mark of the Eternal champion, then filled up on Lemure darts in core, 3 Horde threshers, 2 units of Bloat flies, and 2 units of Sirens for chaff. The above magic set up, alongside all of the autohits generated by flies and chariots, seems very synergistic. Evocation provides Whispers (-1 Res) and Spectr…

  • Quote from CariadocThorne: “I think GW core makes MORE sense for SE. The live deep in the forest, now what kind of weapon is an elf living deep in the forest most likely to have (aside from a bow)? I'd say a big ol' axe which can chop firewood, take down trees and ward of large predators. Before anyone protests at the idea of elves chopping down trees with an axe, just consider that they are unlikely to all be mages capable of singing trees. Sure, when you want to build a city, you get some tree…

  • Quote from Wesser: “Id much much rather see FG back as the 6th edition type Make a unique SE weapon: Count as both a spear and paired weapons and give all elves Adv6 on profile Oh... and allow Druids to take Kindreds. Would love a Wildhunter Druid ” This is what I want, but not for Forest Guard. As far as I'm concerned, Forest Guard seems too formal of a concept for our core troops. The Trewi don't even really have a centralized government, despite having actual gods walking under the same treel…

  • Quote from Giladis: “Quote from Alexwellace: “none of them have an elite spear unit ” HE do ” I guess I meant non-core spear focussed unit. Sea Guard and I guess it could be argued Queens Guard can be considered elite spears, but their defining feature is their hybrid ranged nature, not the fact that they have a spear. But there is no special unit in DE or HbE who's identity is distinctly 'Spear', in the same way that Sword Masters are clearly 'Great Sword' or that Black Guard are 'halberd'.

  • Partially because I didn't want to clutter this thread, partially to plug my own views and partially because I've been trapped in a 6 hour video call talking about laboratory technique health and safety, I've put together my own skeleton view of how the SE LAB should look. the-ninth-age.com/community/in…ure-the-army/#post1407690 My main aim was to move Sylvans towards a more mobile melee army, and to strengthen units individual design identities. My largest changes are *The Chief is replaced by …

  • Everyone else seems to be doing this, so why not pitch in! Sylvan Elves are a book very close to being perfectly acceptable, but also having a huge amount of area for improvement in strengthening army identity. SE Aren't a shooty army, HbE out shoot and out magic us considerably. SE aren't a rush down combat army, Killer Insticts and Death Trance make DE much better at that. SE should be a mobility army, using shooting to remove obsticals to making combat, or weakening monsters to the point that…

  • I completely agree that GW Elves in core and Spear Elves in special would be a very interesting move. All other Elves have a elite great weapon unit, and none of them have an elite spear unit. I've been thinking that combat Sylvan Elves should have march 10 advance 6 for a while now, just to really point out our speed. Rangers shouldn't be spinting through the forest any faster than Blade Dancers should. Imagine a core Elf unit, advance 6, 1 unit 10-25 models can buy Ambush, OS/DS 5, access to b…

  • Quote from Wesser: “Problem with Sylvan Archers is that they dont have a role. I find the other shooting units expensive for what they do, but they have a role and options that makes them sometimes worth it (despite all the RPS in the world). Sylvan Archers.... on a good day they are Wizard bunkers and clear chaff (although they arent super-reliable at it). They dont have the output to cause actual damage under any circumstances and SE dont have any synergy tools to increase their potential outp…

  • @funkyfellow views things in exactly the way I'd like to see the book. My heart bounces, selfishly and perhaps in jealousy, at seeing this thinking in the position of Sylvan ACS When I get some time post-exams I'll take a look at the Homebrew Full Army book you've got there in the signature, I expect great things! The only thing I disagree with you about is the temperament of the Forest Spirits, as I've always preferred the Forest Spirits to be suggestive of a Hive Mind mentality rather than ind…

  • Quote from DanT: “How do they fight in a (big) more conventional battle? (I'm thinking fluff/imagination, not mechanics/rules/points) What does the army look like? What might a typical order of battle be? How does it fight? ” The 6th edition (?) Wood elf army book was the singular most defining reason I started wargaming. Granted I first read it when I was probably 8 or so, but formative none the less. In this book there was a description of how the Asrai went to War, it was like a storm of leav…

Alexwellace - - Sylvan Elves (SE)

    Post

It's less about the bow shots, and more about the oppertunity cost. Skirmish is an actively detrimental rule to the kestrals (a spell I shall stick to out of spite), as it means during flank charges against 2 deep infantry units you can only get 2 models in. Skirmish also prohibits Kestrals from blocking LoS, as skirmishers never block LoS, which means that Kestrals can now no longer be used to block LoS from standard sized shooting into units hiding behind them, such as an Eagle King or a Shape…

I don't like ranged kestral knights. Heath Hunters are in core, are cheaper, and can perform the fast cav role better in my opinion. I would never use Kestrals in place of Heath Hunters. Where Kestrals excel is in units of 4 or 5, with shields and a champion, as a ludicrously mobile melee threat. T4 hard target 4+ armour save is about as resilient as we can expect. Working best in rush-down lists alongside other mobile combat threats, especially other threats that vanguard. I've enjoyed Kestrals…

  • What are your thoughts regarding the balance of the book vs a Sylvan Elves army? The ubiquitous Icon of the Inferno is gone! Elf/Avoidance style play can finally work against ID, hurray for al---wait. Whats that shadow looming behind me? *squelch* Icon is gone, the new arcane item makes 3 dice spells more viable, and the loss of their hereditary while retaining much of the flaming/flammable synergy inherently pushes ID away from Pyro towards Alch. This is good for us. However Plate armour *every…

  • Limbo - Eternal War was a kickstarter for a board game. I backed for 150 AUS almost two years ago, forgot about, and then it turned up a few days ago. 73 models, ranging from huge (the Gluttony, top pictre) to infantry size, all fantastic quality. kickstarter.com/projects/limbominiatures/limbo-eternal-war here is the kickstarter. Searching Facebook for Limbo Eternal War would find their page as well, where I so lovingly stole the pictures above from. The actual board game seems fairly high quali…
