    I use 5 FCG tribsmens with Iron fist and Discipline Banner. Enough for extra HP and protection from Cankons/other big hits. I use Discipline Banner because my BSB very often have other work to do

    small mortar have S7Ap4 in central hit, also Clipped Wings is important factor. Potential 36" range is enough to keep safe distance and if you are lucky you can do serious dmg to Dragons, Single Flyers, Chariots. Small farmer is good tool for flank, where your opponent don't have BSB or General range.

    Low chance to remove it but some chance to change rules like streamline it with other "palanquin" modela in Gold LABs. So I think we will consider: Tall, Cannot be stomped. I hope it don't change your imagination about this model.
