@all I guess the flip side that is useful to us is to tell us which parts of current designs are not useful or important to who/what the design in question is (and why). (We are always designing in the context of a particular level of coarse-graining, and with a need to efficiently represent the key aspects and differences. We are not designing something at RPG levels of detail.)

I think there are some crossed wires in these conversations. My take: If there is any price at which the current design of e.g. immortals or infernal weapons would be acceptable to you, then there is no design problem. if there is no price at which the current design of something is acceptable to you, then what WW is asking is "why is that design not acceptable to you?". Ideally, the answer to that why needs to be precise enough to be unambiguously actionable in the way you want. Because things …

@Winduck For clarity, to make sure I have understood, you are saying it is needed due to anti-flaming aegis saves? Out of interest, how did you solve this problem in the slim book? (Note: Asking questions doesn't mean I agree or disagree or anything else, just that I want to hear exactly what you are saying, to ensure it is carried correctly into internal discussions)

Maybe only overlord or the OC weapon alone. ” Can I get you to elaborate a bit here on why you want this or feel it is needed please? (Flavour? Specific mechanical role? Specific opponents you struggle with? etc etc)

I simply move them (with march rate) in front of an enemy unit, I shoot, I receive a charge, shoot again as a reaction, and wait to see if after 20 shots st5 ap3 and 11 attacks at st 6 ap3 the unit was worth its 480 points. I think it may be. ” Why not 12? Either way, something I like about the unit in this role is the ability to use them as …

And perhaps expand it a bit more generally to thoughts on the skill curve of DE, how flat/steep it is and why (and hence how players can mitigate it if it is deemed to be steep).

  • Quote from Crazydwarf: “- I really feel for you Tyranno, and the LAB team.. May there be an endless amount of midnight oil, if you need to find a good solution with all these restrictive rules ” FWIW I personally don't find the synergy restrictions vis-a-vis characters problematic at all, so need to feel for us This isn't what ID have been about or should be about. It is also worth noting that e.g. reduced eliteness onyx core is not required from the guidelines. As usual the problem is not reall…

Question/perspective: The keys to the citadel design is focussed on flexibility not eliteness. Ergo, the overlord will always have lower total eliteness then e.g. DH lords {with str10 vs res 5, D3 wound shenanigans), and onyx core will never reach the heights of what it was in the slim book, and the weapons that are in the ID book therefore are targeted at being of similar value to those in the arcane compendium. These are basically just all consequences of the initial choice of a flexibility de…

  • Weakest army? Yes please!

    DanT - - General Discussion

    Post

(not commenting in staff role) @JoshAfromNJ *shrug* it kinda depends what you want, because the armies have different skill curves. DH along with SE and EOS have most consistently been average or below in the data releases. But DH have the flattest skill curve, so they are rarely seen as weak amongst more casual or newer players. On the other hand e.g. HBE are very hard to play for most people, so are kinda opposite to DH. And pretty much every other army falls somewhere in between these two. Al…

Yes. For the titan, as opposed to the engine, the kadim has already "escaped" before it misfires: its already all burny, flowy metally, lavay etc (As ever there were various aspects to consider, including complexity, flavour, balance, feel etc etc. Overall we though this was best.)

Immortals are trapped by a ceiling in another book and units that trap immortals won't be able to improve in other roles because immortals trap them, even though they need to, especially DW. ” (my understanding based on experience on RT and past conversations with relevant people): If they were designed at the same time, this wouldn't change, because then the guideline from RT would have been…

I just want to be a little more precise on terminology. Competitiveness is not the same thing as, or a direct function of, eliteness. The constraints on immortal vis-a-vis deepwatch, at least as far as I understand it, are that they cannot have more defensive eliteness than DW (and should be in the same total eliteness area as DW & KG). Neither of these is a constraint on competitiveness. Rest assured that the LAB team and RT all want immortals to be competitive. No-one has any intention of them…

Quote from Galion: “thanks for the tip - I will @DanT to see if he could offer some wisdom here! ” I would say, the primary goals for a beginner at list building are to learn: (1) How to not "obviously" waste points. This means asking whether upgrades/extra bodies/entire unit configurations are actually making a difference on the table. (2) What are the obvious combinations and basic requirements of lists. (e.g. bodyguard plus 1-2 well defended characters is a good idea, armour save/defence on c…

"zero chance"? I don't think it is zero, but it is probably small. I guess it depends how literally you meant it... As I replied to another similar question: Being as honest and transparent as possible, we can never say 100% for sure until the book is gold. (And even then, in another whatever number of years when the book gets done again, something similar might exist). But as I say, in this instance, I think the chances are relatively small.
