  • Quote from ferny: “@SmithF - will you also run through T1 for the hbe army following that T1? The way it is described things look dire, and I'm imagining that scenario now as if it were sent to you by the hbe player. @Arthur - I like your tackling of this and am interested to see more on the topic. ” I think that the OnG are in a better position than the HBE after that turn 1, but things are not dire. The consequences of moving aggressively with the OnG are the following: - The HBE have to use t…

  • @Henrypmiller I think that this might be Scroll material. Dan, thank you very much for this! The end result is definitely a lot better than just base colours + army painter shader! I bet you could even cheat your way out of some best painted nominations as long as the bases look good/great.

  • I've got two replies so far, so that makes 3 different strategies including mine! I won't spoil it, though! To answer your question, I don't think there's a right and wrong way to go about it. But taking a risk with your fragile character bunker in order to target some ramphodons hanging out behind a rock is not something I would do. In the beginning of the game, these ramphodons do not represent a big danger for a couple of reasons: a) you have at least a couple of units more than capable of de…

  • And the second quiz for this week, again relating to how to approach pushing with a combat-heavy army. I've made a mock up of how the battlefield looks based on the pictures that @Baldin posted. The scenario is Capture the Flags and deployment type was Encircle. Note that the right flank of the Saurians may have looked different (it doesn't appear in the photos) but in any case we know that these units (skinks with Caimans, Taurosaur with engine) will not play a part in the battle for the first …

  • Awesome stuff guys! So I took the liberty of transforming @aus_lo 's picture into a UB map, it might help when discussing. the-ninth-age.com/community/ga…c5fe35b08669693b78b91ad1c I consider that the deployment is done, and that the Orcs have the first turn (since their opponent chose sides). Judging from the middle marker, the scenario is "Hold the Ground". As the OP mentioned, the elves have the upper hand when it comes to range, and closing the gap quickly and efficiently is very important. A…

  • I am very glad that his interests people, I think it will be a great learning experience for all! Quote from ArchangelusM: “So, do you want us marked ones to give you situations or to provide tactical decisions to the situations posted by the readers of your blog? ” I would say both: if you encounter situations that you find interesting, you can bring them forth. And, of course, I'd expect you to participate in the tactics discussion of every week's (?) topic. Quote from ArchangelusM: “If second…

  • Greetings, fellow generals! Allow me to present this idea of a thread/discussion to you: the ask Smith (and friends!) tactics discussion thread! What is it all about? I believe that while part of being successful in the game is a) building a good list and b) deploying in a good manner, there is a third and perhaps far more important part to it: making the right decisions at the right time. Even if you're faced with a very dire situation, there's always an optimal way to handle it, and this may s…

Simply beautiful, stunning painting! If I may venture some criticism, I do think that the conversion with the hooded Glade Guard heads and the Shadow Warrior bodies does your painting skills a disservice: it might be the angle, but it seems as if the models suffer from a case of "giraffe head", since the neck appears too long. That said, I could not come close to that level of painting/modelling even if I tried for years. Following!

  • Very good results, especially for speed painting! Eagerly awaiting that tutorial, you may be onto something!

  • Quote from PrinceCharming: “@SmithF and again no competition?:D ” Hahaha, you'd be surprised! First off, I thought I'd be the only player with a Dragon in the tournament, turns out that there are no less than four (!) dragon lists out of 32 players. Including an Imperial Dragon. So that's an extra challenge of sorts: best scoring Dragon list! My vote goes for @Sire Trencavel and his EoS dragonlist: fast, very decent scoring, good magic and shooting support! On the plus side: only 4 army lists wi…

@JimMorr Some suggestions regarding the syntax of your Indiegogo page. Bear in mind that I'm not a native speaker per se, so perhaps someone with an English language degree could help. Quote from JimMorr: “The 9th Age Fantasy Battles (T9A) is a free tabletop fantasy wargame that you can download from the T9A Project webpage. Their/A team of volunteers has been working on rules, art and background for almost three years. In the Fall of 2018, the Golden Edition will be released, and which will rem…

  • Quote from Clef: “ But hey, no bad spirit at the ETC! So I enjoyed a nice chat with some members of Team Belgium and especially @SmithF of course. It was a pleasure to finally meet you and swap shirts!(I didn't take the picture where I was the only one who did as he was told and looked silly ) 33615794wz.jpg And congratulations to finishing 5th Team Belgium! @Wesser: I hope you didn't miss the Löwenbräu in the last picture! ” Hey Clef! It was a pleasure meeting you guys! For what it's worth, you…

Quote from MicWobits: “Very nice dwarfs. How have you done your snow? It’s looks good. ” The snow is a mix of Citadel Snow with Water effects and PVA glue. Having no access to the same materials now, I tried instead the Snow from the citadel texture (Valhallan Blizzard). The verdict is that it's not as good, and gives a more "chalky" finish to the bases. I'll try mixing it with some water effects and see if I can improve it.

Thank you for this excellent report, great insight and food for thought! Druidism/Shamanism combo seems like a good choice: if you're going to spend dice regrowing stuff, it had better be 60-point Wild Huntsmen

  • Subscribed and following the discussion/feedback. However, let me point out something that keeps bugging me: Ever since T9A started I've noticed that tactical discussion has given way to 'how to change X or Y' discussions. I haven't been as active in the tactics threads for SE lately, mainly because my gaming focus has been Dwarven Holds this year. However, I believe that there is a lot of potential in the items/units that are considered unplayable. I would really love it if we could also have b…

  • Briar Maidens, Kestrel Knights, Wild Huntsmen all have very good chances against monsters: they are immune to stomp, have a high enough defensive skill to avoid most hits and a volume of attacks that makes sure that some wounds go through. 4 Wild Huntsmen charging a Taurosaur will deal 4 wounds on average. It's your job to make sure that the monster sustains a couple of wounds from shooting/magic before you charge it. On a similar note, most of our combat units can put a couple of wounds on mons…

  • Some comments regarding the last few posts: I think that Sylvan Elves are distinct in their combat ability compared to HBE or DE in that they don't rely on brute force. It is true that they don't get S6 on troops, not even on charging Wild Huntsmen. But on the other hand, the volume of attacks with a reasonably high AP makes up for it. There is certainly a psychological impact in saying that your unit has S6 and MW(2) against monsters. But I've found that my Bladedancers with their lowly S4 ap2 …
