  • (not commenting in staff role) FWIW, since the conversation has gone that way, I find t9a core rules both more tactical&strategic and fun than 6th ed legacy. (With the only exception being that I sometimes play t9a without objectives, or with different objectives, because they are not my most favourite thing). For me personally, t9a blends elements of 6th&8th, and then has its own thing as well. This blend delivers better games for me personally than any legacy or rival equivalent. (I think goin…

  • Is the rocket battery op?

DanT - - Infernal Dwarves (ID)

    Post

@trasius I've been trying to understand what is at the root of your objections to the rocket battery. It seems to me that you don't think there should be artillery pieces as good against large units as there are against infantry or gigantic? Trebuchets, runed up catapults, cannons, can all swing games substantially if they get the right hit at the right time. And runed up catapults are pretty reliable, flexible, longer ranged than the rocket battery, and have less counterplay. So to me it seems …

(not commenting in staff role) @trasius It sounds like you are saying that the total eliteness is just too high? (Hidden Content) The bit I'm not following is why the specific eliteness of the rocket battery is too high, compared to (for example) a DH volleygun with an engineer, or a rune-crafted dwarf catapult with engineer? I.e. how should a designer know where to draw the line in general? What should the criteria be? Why is the rocket battery on one side of the line and those other elements a…

  • (not commenting in staff role) Quote from JordanBladen: “The other big thing is how popular and dominant skirmish games are in the industry. Almost all of the big ones are skirmish now and alot of people like the freedom and style. And rather begrudgingly - models on rounds look better. ” Yeah, all of this was very clear to me "in the trenches" when I was staff for GW. For GW's audience/market/business model over the last 10+ years, a ranked mass battle game was just the wrong choice for them. S…

(not commenting in staff role) @trasius It isn't clear to me exactly why in principle you think the rocket battery is OP (as opposed to just a good design with preferred targets)? If it was say 350pts, would you think it was fine? Some more details below about my take on "OP" generally/some further questions for you if you are interested. (Hidden Content)

(not commenting in staff role) Quote from StockFish85: “The book is very weak externally but also internally. There are several options in the book that stand-out as the competivie cookie cutter right now (old Stormfiends come in mind, old Stormvermin). Externally this army as it is right now most rely heavily on its first two turns with shooting and magic support. As soon as the enemy touches this army in CC it crumbles instantounsly. ” Huh. Interesting. This is basically diametrically opposed …

  • (not commenting in staff role; and apologies for brevity-I'm on holiday) @Thomashkis Hi Thanks for the thought that went into your post This reply to you is a pretty succinct and simple version of how things work: Quote from Adam: “There is no spreadsheet with price per attribute, instead they are priced by usage so if small units are played by large aren't then initial size gets increase while extra models get decrease. If the reverse situation is true then the opposite is applied. ” Let me add…

Quote from teclis2000: “@DanT Thinking a bit about your list, I was questioning myself what armies/builds would be most uncomfortable matchups for your list. I have some ideas (overall I think your list is very solid in most matchups), but I only know ID from playing against them. So, I would really be interested to hear your thoughts. ” I'll take this (and any other questions about my list) on my blog, so as not to fill up this thread with my pontifications

    Post

Indefinitely In the sense that I'm not gonna close the thread. I guess your question is more "if a new post is made here, could it influence internal discussions"? The answer to that is "in principle, the time where a post here could influence internal discussions has not yet passed". I can post when that time has passed if you want me to (and I don't forget to)? But of course, as always, remember the eternal caveat that "could influence" and "will/does influence" are not the same.

  • Quote from bigwilyt: “@DanT, i think i know what you mean, but would mind elaborating on what you mean by slow hobby and fast hobby? ” Erm... so... I wrote a long and rambling definition somewhere on the forum, but I don't know where it is right now, sorry Here are some bits and pieces off the top of my head (Hidden Content) I mostly just posted here to express my wish that the old world makes some people happy, because there is not enough mudita in the world

  • Honestly, I hope that the old world brings joy to gamers across the world, and scratches the itch that many are hoping it will scratch I don't understand how anyone can have any other response, to any company putting out any game I suspect I personally will likely not gel with it, because of the gradual move of GW from "slow hobby" to "fast hobby" over the last 30 years. I will doubtless try it (I play many game systems anyway), and I certainly hope that my hunch is not borne out. But as I say, …

    DanT - - General Discussion

    Post

@tiny I think you are misunderstanding what I consider "data" in this case, and the use case I envisage, and the precision required for that use case. (But let us not have that discussion here-let's talk internally or by PM and I can explain in more detail). But regardless, I agree there are hurdles. Nonetheless, I see no reason for members of the community (who are keen to try it) to not investigate it, beginning with a limited case. That way at least your concerns can be quantified and evaluat…

  • Quote from Altao: “ Quote from arwaker: “ At least my assumption was kinda confirmed. People playing a specific army have a tendency to feel LAB changes on their own army as a bit more restrictive than people not playing that army. ” You know what is funny? That there is also ID LAB, but it isn't mentioned. I wonder why ” For the record, there have been some incredibly vociferous complaints from numerous ID players about the new LAB, the things it has lost, problematic directions etc etc. We hav…

(not commenting in staff role) A caiman can just "bite his thumb" at the enemy, thus showing that he believes the saurians and their opponents are not alike in dignity. (Apologies to anyone who studied a different curriculum to me and has no idea what the reference is )
