  • Team Canada Needs a Merc!

    BlackLancer - - ETC

    Post

Hey All, We unfortunately just had one of our players bail on us at the last minute and are now looking for a Merc. -> If you are hoping to play at ETC this year, please send me a message. Our team is hoping to be somewhat competitive. We've done quite well in a bunch of our online tournaments to prepare, but I don't think anyone expects us to win. Top 10 would be a great result for us. So we are serious, but not too serious. -> If you are interested, send me a message and I can share the detail…

  • Unbreaking VS

BlackLancer - - The Vermin Swarm (VS)

    Post

Quote from skipschnit: “ Why is it that other players think so poorly of the VS shooting? Is it because people aren’t using the right tools? Are people too focused on the magic phase? ” Not that I am doubting you, but could you post a couple of lists you are running? Any tournament results to show for these lists? Given that I'm seeing so few shooty VS lists, and in particular very few shooty VS lists doing well at tournaments, perhaps I am lacking imagination, but I just don't see VS shooting d…

  • Quote from Chronocide: “Quote from setrius: “In that case become in upgrades for Bloodfur Legate ” I think prefects should stay their own entry, as like a hero level character (legate is the lord level one, dictator is more of a special character) But I would suggest changing the VS senator to a Prefect upgrade (which does actually make sense with the VS fluff) rather than it's own Vermin Senator entry. ” I really, really love this idea. If you eliminate the Senator as an entry, but instead are …

  • Quote from The Unmarked: “Quote from WarX: “Why not to move back to idea that VS characters can't end up movement outside units? Simple and 100% effective against chaffing. ” The quick fixes for this crap aren't difficult and several have been proposed. Increased Special Item Allowance, Increased defense stats for the Prefects who are supposed to join fighty units (Fetthis, Skorchit), or more Orator's Togas per Army (0-3 would be great). Adding that self-inflicted damage doesn't count towards Co…

  • Missing Playstyle: Ranged/Combined Arms: I agree with everything @Todesbrot said above. All of our shooting options are generally not good enough. As such, both the guideline styles of 'combined arms' and 'ranged' are not especially viable. Additionally, our access to magic missiles is somewhat limited. (We generally have hand of heaven and wrath of god, but those two are not quite enough to make us a ranged focused army on their own. It would also help if our hereditary was less situational and…

  • If becoming unit champions is not an option, then I think the answer has involve making the Prefect's special rules better. As it stands, the rules are generally not worth their points... OR; perhaps they are close to worth their points, but the playstyle they would support is not exactly competitive. Lets look at the abilities: Fetthis Fleshmaster: - if you had access to a 100pt banner that gave a unit Swift stride, would you take it? Probably not, that is too expensive. Especially if you are p…

  • Quote from arwaker: “Community is split, everybody has different opinion. VS needs work, but none of the things you mention is an issue in my opinion. ” If you really think that, I don't think you are listening. The Pestilent Pulpit is not an issue? You might be the only person in the world who believes that. I also don't entirely buy the argument that the community is split. Sure, there is a divergence of potential solutions and not everyone will agree on the solutions, but there is also widesp…

  • Quote from Little Joe: “Quote from Little Joe: “ We are depending on the community to help find topics for the beta phase, concerns and demands for changes. Some changes may be very hard to implement. Change is not impossible (giant rats in core). [...] So why do we appear to not be listening? You can be assured we read all concerns and many get emphasis in the process when stakeholders flag topics. As mentioned above this is a collaborative process and more feedback from us to the community is …

  • Quote from Necrosa: “Quote from mr-modmoto: “But as this is in beta now, the changes should get less drastic and therefore morale setup should stay mostly like it is. ” Be sure I'm not doing here any evil spirit. There has never been any real "drastic" changes since the alpha 1. I'm actually thinking the problem is far more deeper. Or really earlier in the process : may be there is too much progresses in the design between guidelines and alpha 1. Guidelines open a lot of ways. Alpha 1 is the cho…

  • Questions for LAB team

BlackLancer - - The Vermin Swarm (VS)

    Post

    1. Why are the magic options so limited in the book? Were more varied setups originally discussed or has magic always been limited to 1.5 entries in the book? 2. Why is the plague side of of the book such a small part of the book. Are there any ideas still out there that might give the plague-side a larger role to play in the book? 3. Why are the shooting options in the book rarely selected in tournament lists? Is this by design? Can good shooting not work alongside life is cheap? Or; what else …

  • *Sigh... while most of the changes seem logical, this release leaves me extremely disappointed. None of the issues that have been widely discussed appear to have been addressed. If this is evidence that the book is moving towards completed status without addressing the core-issues, its hard to see the LAB as anything other than a colossal failure at this point If not now, when will we finally see progress towards the key issues in the book?

  • Quote from trasius: “Quote from rambage: “I'll chime in, but honestly I am depressed by all of this. We've been making THE SAME BLOODY COMPLAINTS from day1, and nothing changed. -Triumvirate is a neat idea but it shoots us in the foot. In execution, it is bad, it's underpowered, it eats a TON of points and all of that for a mediocre version of what every other army gets BASELINE. -Give us back the plague part of the army. We have exactly 1 unit that is ANTISYNERGIC with the hero it is supposed t…

  • Quote from Lagerlof: “Quote from BlackLancer: “Right now VS needs to spend around 650. ” That doesn't really feel accurate TBH. 295 - Swarm Priest, Wizard Adept, Thaumaturgy, Book of Arcane Mastery, Holy Triumvirate, Caelysian Pantheon 125 - Swarm Priest, Wizard Apprentice, Witchcraft, Holy Triumvirate, Caelysian Pantheon 125 - Swarm Priest, Wizard Apprentice, Thaumaturgy, Holy Triumvirate, Caelysian Pantheon That's 545 points, and you have access to 2 different paths, and +2 to cost for Wrath. …

  • Fair enough... But if you look at it many players are not using it for that purpose. Its seems too expensive to be used for the use case it was designed for. Its quite expensive with you go 3 casters + Cowl. I'm just looking for a way to pay around 450pts to get the power of a wizard master... Right now VS needs to spend around 650. There has to be a better option? Could it have a different cost for swarm priests instead of other characters?

  • No, it would help because you can satisfy the conditions for Triumvirate in a dictator list without having to get a 3rd wizard. So you take 2 swarm priests and another character with Cowl. This way you have a 6 spell magic phase and 2 of your casters can get level 5-6 spells.

  • One small change that would potentially help a couple of entries: Make the cowl very cheap, if not a free upgrade on non-swarm priests. - I realize that prior to the last update, it was cheaper than the triumvirate upgrade which caused problems, but if you make it a non-swarm priest item you fix this problem. When you build a Dictator list, it becomes really difficult to find a model you can put the Cowl on. In a Dicator list your characters are often something like this: -Dictator -Priest 1 (wi…

  • Quote from mr-modmoto: “While I agree that the changes are quite drastic, I also think that this is one of the better LAB books in general. And that is mainly because of the bold choices that where made to make the army a really unique 9th age army with very little ties to the old whfb books. I think this is a good thing as the 9th age has to evolve from a balance patch to a truly own game. Giving a model one strength or toughness more can change their role by quite a bit but it is not a very co…

  • Isn't that exactly the point? Catapults are pretty terrible in all except the VS on VS matchup? - why bother taking them? It also seems odd to me why flaming would be relevant against almost anything? VS has no way to make things flammable... -> Against something like trolls or thicket beasts that care about flammable: -You can get 6hits against Thicket Beasts, wounding on 5's with a re-roll and then they still get their 5+ and 5++. With a perfect hit you do 2wounds? Who cares... Against 8-troll…

  • Quote from Wesser: “I worry a bit over all those complains over shooting, which Ive so far seen as almost game-breaking. Maybe I need to see it post-Doomspark nerf… ” Hmmm - what parts of VS shooting do you see as game breaking? Specifics would help? Outside of the Doomspark when it was 195 points, VS shooting is not taken much, and I think the perception is that it is quite under powered? What are you seeing that everyone else is missing?
