  • Saurian Ancients - Background and Theme

    Hi guys :)

For some reason the SA forum is missing the official pinned topic on background that is used by the background team to gather opinions and ideas about the background of the faction.

So to remedy that I am opening this topic and am looking forward to your cooperation as the BGT will soon work on finalising the SA background.

To help us out please answer the following questions and consult the already released parts of the background to get the sense of the general direction we will take with the Saurian Ancients.

    1) Choose 5 adjectives that in your opinion describe the Saurian Ancients the best

    2) What is your favourite theme/thrope associated with the SA like factions/creatures in fantasy

    3) What is your least favourite theme/thrope associated with the SA like factions/creatures in fantasy

Have fun and know that we are reading :)

  • Ok i'll start.

    1) Choose 5 adjectives that in your opinion describe the Saurian Ancients the best

    - Ancient (duh)
    - Wise
    - Vengeful
    - Enigmatic
    - Religious

    2) What is your favourite theme/thrope associated with the SA like factions/creatures in fantasy

That the different Lizard-like 'races' work well together to achieve a common goal. This includes the larger creatures (Taurosaur, Thyroscutus, Stygiosaur, Raptor, Carnosaur, Jungle Swarm, Spearback, Salamander, Pteradon, Rhamphodon, and equivalents etc), as well as the 'humanoid' races (Cuatl, Skink, Saurian, Caiman, Chameleon). Their civilisation works and prospers due to this cooperation. It makes them a legitimate threat on the battlefield, because it seems like the whole of the jungle's inhabitants are fighting alongside these intelligent beings, to kill you.

    3) What is your least favourite theme/thrope associated with the SA like factions/creatures in fantasy

That they are, essentially, legions of unthinking warriors who obey the words of the Cuatls/Slanns/leaders unquestionably. They should be free-thinking beings, who follow their leaders because they choose to (like EoS, KoE, HbE, SE, DE, DH, ID, OK armies), not be mindless robot armies controlled by one master (such as UD, VC, DL armies).
Each and every Saurian/Skink/Caiman/Cuatl should have a personality with Character, desires, (some?) emotions, aspirations, etc. This could lead to in-fighting between SA factions, and help justify why the Humans/Elves/Dwarves/Ogres see the SAs as 'evil' (?).

    2) What is your favourite theme/thrope associated with the SA like factions/creatures in fantasy

I´d like them to be seen as a nature power. The way the nature and its spirit has to face another races corruption, which are massively called to fight not for their own profit but for the good of the nature/living/world. An elder race, tough but at the same time more civilized than most people could think. Peaceful most times, but absolutely relentless and fierce when the fight arrives, with the help of many of the nature creatures (dinosaurs and beasts).

    3) What is your least favourite theme/thrope associated with the SA like factions/creatures in fantasy

I wouldnt like to see a swarm mind too or a civilitation ruled by just a few gods or godly beings. I would like a bit more intelligence for saurus as for skinks, able to be aware of their decissions, but also them having an innate skill for fighting as nature beings and deffenders. Powerful when they need too, peaceful (but not very sociable with other races) normally.

  • In contrast i am big fan of on aztec/ maya based theme for SA, wich was also used from GW in early editions. A strict caste system civilisation, in wich every caste has their role in this civilisation. Cuatl>Skinks>Saurus>Caimans

    Cuatl: religious leader, highpriests
Skinks: priests, politicians, monster (-egg) hunters, guerilla/tactical "warriors"
    Saurus: block soldiers/warriors, farmer, worker
    Caimans: breaking warriors, enshrined creatures

    1) Choose 5 adjectives that in your opinion describe the Saurian Ancients the best

    -religious
-cosmologic (planetconstelations/calendars) and scientific (toxology, chemistry, farming, architecture) practised (skinks)
    -born predators (SW and Caimans)
    -scaly skinned
    -coldblooded

    2) What is your favourite theme/thrope associated with the SA like factions/creatures in fantasy

    -Dinosaurs!!!
-mystic and withdrawn civilisation for foreigners
    -being a dying civilisation

Imo this actec/maya based theme would give SA a special touch wich differes them from other fractions. But i also think T9A-Staff and some members wants to create something completly new. Just my to cents.
  • 1) Choose 5 adjectives that in your opinion describe the Saurian Ancients the best
    Alien
    Ancient
    Brutal
    Fanatical
    Segregated

    2) What is your favourite theme/trope associated with the SA like factions/creatures in fantasy

It was heavily overdone with GW's stuff, but I do like the whole fallen from former glory/become stagnated and heavily ritualized trope. I think it fits best with SA over all of the other "elder races". I think though that better reasons could be used to justify that stagnation/fall; like the cuatl felt their social power slipping away (shifting to the "lesser" castes) and had to repress progress in order to maintain their "rightful" place as top of the pyramid.

    3) What is your least favourite theme/trope associated with the SA like factions/creatures in fantasy

I've always disliked the whole "secretly good guys/saviors of the world" theme, as well as the clone army deal. I think that these ancient anthropomorphic lizard people should have their own self-serving agendas and desires, and live within a heavily structured (and enforced) caste system (based primarily on race), with the cuatl being the religous/educated elite that rules over all the others through tradition, religion, and control of information.
  • 1) Choose 5 adjectives that in your opinion describe the Saurian Ancients the best

    Ancient, Determined, Alien, Patient, Violent

    2) What is your favourite theme/thrope associated with the SA like factions/creatures in fantasy

I like the Aztec theme, ancient beings sacrificing humans atop pyramids for a cause too grand to understand for someone with human lifespan

    3) What is your least favourite theme/thrope associated with the SA like factions/creatures in fantasy

Dinosaurs riding other dinasours, when the only appeal of SA is deploying cool huge dinosaur models.

What i liked in the old story was this: the main bad guy of the story (demons) was not (directly) opposed by knights in shiny armor or other cliches but by a race enigmatic and alien which, in the human p.o.v., is also a monster.

Mechanically i dont like it when what i can do is choose the most powerful from a list of dino models, i would like an army with high but conditional synergy which can achieve great things 'when the stars are right'
  • Here are my 5 adjective to give you a little insight into my thoughts.

    Primordial

    Inscrutable

    Predatory

    Ordered

    Savage

    Keep them coming guys

    Enigmatic race

    with Developed culture.

    Hierarchic organisation that is

    Matchless in many aspects.

    Unstoppable in their fury.

    2)

I enjoyed theme that these creatures despite looking savage on first sight, in fact they had highly developed culture with powerful mysterious artifacts and were fighting for the greater good. They didn't care about glory, rewards or even survival - they just had tasks that had to be done.

    3)

I didn't like very much how they were isolated from the others along with very low interaction.
  • 1) Choose 5 adjectives that in your opinion describe the Saurian Ancients the best

    Ancient civilization.
    Enigmatic.
    Mystic/religious.
    Fierce.
    Intelligent.

    2) What is your favourite theme/thrope associated with the SA like factions/creatures in fantasy:
I totally love the aztec/mayan aesthetics and influences. Also, the cuatl being the best spellcasters, able to cast global spells and to shape the world to their will. Their ferocity, and their work with dinosaurs and other creatures of the jungle, as if the whole nature were striking at the same time.
I like the fact that they don't die from old age, just by deseases or being killed, but they would have long time between reproduction periods or reduced amount of descendants.
I like their plans being long term ones, so that creatures like humans, with a "short lifespan", can't really underestand their plans

    3) What is your least favourite theme/thrope associated with the SA like factions/creatures in fantasy:
I do not mind them being "spawned" from spawn pools, but i'd rather those eggs coming from somewhere.
I do not like them to be mindless biological automatons, programmed to follow instructions. I'd rather like them to hace some free thinking, but having some instintive knowledge and having basic education and combat training from early ages.
I'd like them not to be so isolated from the other factions. In fact, I see them as natural allies for the Amazons (thats why them would have similar looks and believes).
  • 1) Choose 5 adjectives that in your opinion describe the Saurian Ancients the best
    Wisdom
    Fearless
    Specialised
    Religious
    Alien

    2) What is your favourite theme/thrope associated with the SA like factions/creatures in fantasy

    There are a couple:
Legendary magical might of the Cuatl beyond the understanding of civilized races. Tied to that their magic should really be tied to ‘bigger picture’ stuff rather than the likes of casting fireballs around the place. Tough to do in current mechanics, but think their magic should be heavy on buffs/hexes rather than petty direct damage stuff.
Absolute specialisation. Whole race exists to work for the Cuatl. Units should be very different from each other and be excellent at specific things, potentially with big weaknesses outside of their particular sphere of experience. Therefore, wide array of weird and wonderful things.
Alien/Religious – in some ways they are a cold blooded version of Undying Dynasties for me. They exist to serve their overlords. Things that interest mortal races are of absolutely no interest to these lizards.

    3) What is your least favourite theme/thrope associated with the SA like factions/creatures in fantasy

Trying to square the SA circle into conventional army norms.
    The lack of variety currently.
    Inflexibility of army design.
Lack of theme on Path access.

  • Determined
    Patient

    Vengeful
    Viscious

I like that it has always had the "old world" feeling like that of the Aztecs. I been to the Yucatan many times and the correlation between the two is inspiring. It has that lost world feel mixed with treasure island. I think of how Pandora could have been based on the SA background, the synergies with nature and the primal defense of her.

What I don't like is what I told the GW team for years....the frog used to be great, why so one dimensional now? I've always wanted to go back to the great fighting toad and with the passing of time his predatory rage gives way to wiser contemplations.

  • 1) Choose 5 adjectives that in your opinion describe the Saurian Ancients the best

    • Ancient
    • Unyielding/no surrender/utterly devoted
    • Patient
    • Calculated fury/savagery
    • Intelligent
    2) What is your favourite theme/thrope associated with the SA like factions/creatures in fantasy

I love the Aztec/Mayan influences in the models and fluff so that is something I like about the GW Lizardmen. When I see Lizardmen/SA fighting I see troops that are unbreakable, incorruptible, unyielding (Doom reference :p). They fight in a savage way without finess, dismembering and brutal. When disarmed they resort to claws, teeth and tails. When injured they continue to fight and simply refuse to die. That is the image I have always had with Saurian Warriors (inluding characters). Skinks are the scalpel of the army, going for weak spots and taking out elements that are in a bad position. Guerilla warfare, but just as savage.

They are tactical, and wait until the perfect timing to release the beast (literally and figuratively).

    3) What is your least favourite theme/thrope associated with the SA like factions/creatures in fantasy

SA troops are not dumb robots that are controlled by the Cuatl. To me they should be freethinking individual creatures that are utterly devoted to their Cuatl.
  • 1) Choose 5 adjectives that in your opinion describe the Saurian Ancients the best
    - Unyielding
    - Far-seeing (5,000 year plan and all)
    - Dispassionate
    - Orderly
    - Diverse/Specialized

    2) What is your favourite theme/thrope associated with the SA like factions/creatures in fantasy
It's hard to pick one, so I'm going to say two:
    - The tough-as-nails kind of feel. If all Saurian Warriors were Unbreakable, that would probably be bad for balance, but it would be entirely appropriate for character. I see no reason why they would ever cut and run. The "cold-blooded" and "scaly skin" rules play into that, creating an image of an unyielding wall of reptilian scales and fury. I agree with @Haemoglobin on the image of patient fury, waiting until the right moment to release a hellstorm of blades, teeth and dinosaurs.
    - The diversity and specialization of creatures, creating the essential synergy of the army, with very different creatures each working in their particular role. Picture the Covenant from Halo.

    3) What is your least favourite theme/thrope associated with the SA like factions/creatures in fantasy
    - Primitive. I don't mind a little "fallen from former glory", but I don't like the idea that these guys have no idea how the world works anymore, and they just soldier on in their ritualized path. In particular, with a Mayan- and Aztec-based feel, I think this is important. Portraying a Mayan/Aztec parody society as advanced beyond human knowledge is a nice break from the historical European conception of those people as primitive and subhuman.
    - Evil? I guess reptiles, thanks to their very alien feel, usually get assigned to be bad guys, but I really liked the idea that this society consists of the ultimate servants of Order, and are conceived of as the first line of defense against the Daemons. They don't need to be the "robot army" people have mentioned here, but I really dislike the portrayal of SA as the tyrants of a former age. I hope that the Lesser Races simply misunderstood the situation, and that their collective memories make it seem worse than it was. They probably had no idea just how bad the Daemonic threat was in those days!
  • Fun thread that made me think for a while.

    1) Choose 5 adjectives that in your opinion describe the Saurian Ancients the best

    1. Resilient
    2. Unrelenting
    3. Vicious
    4. Very low in intelligence
    5. Narrowminded

    2) What is your favourite theme/thrope associated with the SA like factions/creatures in fantasy
Alright, this is something that I really explored awhile back, which always made me smile. I argued that Skink Priests are actually the true masterminds of the race. They use the Slanns as puppets to lead the saurus and protect their homelands. The Skink Priests have seized power a long time ago when the Slanns fell silent and have kept the status quo by commanding in their stead. I like how time has passed them by and they have no place in the modern world. I also like how the world is no longer theirs and they are degrading and becoming more and more lizards and less and less man. It reminds me how dinosaurs used to rule the world and now we have domesticated their ancestors to lay eggs for us to eat every day. Truly tragic.

    3) What is your least favourite theme/thrope associated with the SA like factions/creatures in fantasy
Their cavalry: lizards riding lizards. Its like if human cavalry was just a dude riding a fatter dude :)
