Time for my third blog here.

For about a year now I've been meaning to start working on a new army (and the original idea for the army is much much older than that), but there seemed to always be another project that drew my attention instead. So I've postponed it while continuing to add things to my OnG and my VC. Lately I've also been very occupied with work and before that with terrain building. But now the time has finally come. With the Christmas holiday I have a bunch of free time so I've gotten to work on my brand new army, the Empire of Sonnstahl!

The theme of the army will be a bit of a mercenary force. The troops will be a bit rag-tag, with humans of different background and even some different species mixed in here and there. I plan to have it feature pirates, ogres, halflings dwarfs and even giants. I will still want to keep it somewhat coherent in style and colour, so I imagine the EoS having outfitted these mercenaries with proper uniforms for the most part, but more on that later.

For now I only have a little strip tease to show you, and I mean that literally.

Right, I've had some pictures ready to show you for a while now but I wanted to make sure that awful joke I started off with had really sunken in. With that out of the way, this blog can only become better.

So, the result of the stipping:


The parts on the left have been stripped, the parts on the right have not. I use Biltema Penseltvätt for the stripping ( @kollibri ). Its simply a solution used to wash dirty brushes in. Environmentally friendly and really effective at getting the paint off, on metal as well as plastic. My thanks to @Willman for giving me the tip to try it out.

I've also cleaned up a bunch of 6th ed State Troops from GW (though most were cleaned using a much less effective method using ordinary soap (såpa)):


I've got about 60 of these guys, though most still on sprues. I plan to use them and combine them with some newer state troops and some ogre fillers to make two units of 40+ dudes. These are the bases of the first unit, which will have halberds:



As you can see I've left room for two fillers, one for each of the ogres in the first image. They will be converted to carry halberds as well. I also have another ogre on my table but he won't be used until the next unit with swords and boards. I love the model though so I thought I'd share a pic of him anyway:

And then a bunch of humans converted slightly. Anyone like to guess what I'm trying to achieve with these conversions below?



Next I'll probably need to start putting models on bases and actually getting things done.

I'm puffing along with my Halberdiers. Earlier this week I got some heads in the mail from Statuesque Miniatures, and I got to work attaching heads to the guys and gals I had assembled so far. Also build a few more but not that many. Also placed a champion in the unit, but I am very unsure if I want him there, what do you think, does he fit?

Anways, onto the pictures, which are actually decent this week. I use the few last rays of sunlight to take them.

Indeed. I became inspired by the FAQ session with Sigmund Selig in The 9th Scroll issue #3. He is asked about women in Sonnstahl and claims they hold the same rights as men and that they can be found in the military, although not as plentiful as the men. I hope to make that come to life by having about 10-20% women in each unit.

The conversions were quite fun to do as well. I expanded their chests a bit, slimed out the waist on some and flesh out the hips a bit on a few. I also, of course, cut off the jewel patch from the crotch. The puffy sleeves and leggings help hide other features so those make it easier to imagine more feminine shapes underneath.

Thanks! I do try to keep it varied. I hate painting mono-pose near identical figures so I want to make them all a bit different. Using bits and bobs from different eras help a lot with that.

Well, this place has been silent too long. As usual assembling the models takes an insane amount of time for me, but I'm just about finished with the big infantry unit now.





Only thing left to do is some green stuff work on the banner attachment and some small bits and pieces here and there. Then it is on to painting!
