Another just a little bit of practice tonight, mostly around scoping out weak points for printing. This will probably be a fine detail test.
With the pegs everything is connected, but the undercuts will have supports you may want or not want. You won't be able to remove them, so get more control.
Reduce the bugs to the bodies, save as a second legless version (select and delete legs and fill the gap). Then also remove some bodies and create a few leg objects. Give the base say 5 loop cuts in each direction, then manipulate those verts to get a bit of a mound and then position stuff all over.
Just turn and resize as needed but make sure each part is at least partially sunk into the base.
Then stick a few with legs on top (legs inserted into carapace), add some legs to the sides (twist and turn to position again). Finally subdivide the base with the subdivision surface modifier using simple. Save before you do and test out various raster sizes and the no subdivision but dyntopo function in sculpting.
Only use the first brush, the hook, flatten and smooth sculpting tools. Make the mound fit better for each bug removing undercuts (training to show and hide).
Nice skull by the way, where is it from?
