Interesting. As a total SE Beginner I was planning to play the two princes (shapeshifter, Forest guardian) too. So good to see that others also think it can work

I (List 8) played against List 1 and got soundly beaten at 20-0, the sacred seed combo was harder to avoid than what i though, then in retrospective i would have just needed to place my kestrels so that they touched the forest in which the forest guards were to prevent them teleporting

list 7 is a head scratcher, what was that guy thinking

My favourite is list 11.

List 10 however must be the weakest list Ive seen. What matches is is supposed to win?. Enemy SE?

Its probably because I never have or Will participate in a Team Tournament, and evaluate based on “all-comers”.

Its an avoidance list and the trouble with that is that when it have a good matchup its usually easy for the opponent to play for minor defeat.

If it has bad matchup (dont know how likely that is with Team Tournaments) it Will go very badly. I saw some VC Nosferatu lists with 3 Banshees.... Good luck

So sure.. partner it against a DE list if you can, but its overly matchup dependant

10 and 11 are my favorites although there is plenty of innovative choices throughout the lists. I don't do team play though.

Just recognized that there are no thicket beasts at all in the lists. Are they so bad (compared to the other units)?

That's something that I find remarkable as well. I have always included a unit of 5 with shepherd bsb, but now I also go for a much more mobile set of dancers with a dancer bsb. Thicket beast's problem for me is really their lack of mobility... What I like about them is that they are scoring, but they seem to synergise not as well with elven units.

Team Tournament makes for different types of list.

Most of the lists are shooty/avoidance (despite the normal state of such a build) or glass cannon.

Lets see the lists for the next Big singles tourney and see if Thickets are still out☺️

I’m the greatest thicket beasts fan often plying at least 2 units of them but I have to agree that now rangers are competing with them. I wouldn’t leave home without at least 5 thickets plus Shepherd because they are simply too solid and can win you objectives but every time I consider a second unit now I think rangers will serve me better and will allow me to avoid double strength buff.

A recap of my games (List 8)


Game 1 against SE
Map 1, Frontline Clash, Hold the Ground
Lost 0-20, i honestly had no idea on how to beat him, too many ranger and a shapeshifter that could just drop a unit of forest guard behind me were too much, on top of that he got the first turn and i misplayed my deployement.

Game 2 against WDG
I marked it as yellow because i missed that the wretched ones have irredemable and then found out when i was studying the pairings, so a pretty tough game

Map 3, Frontline Clash (i think), Capture the Flag
Lost 5-15 but this game was close, his general got away with 1 wound negating me about 600 points, my dancers and prince smashed the sloth warriors that unfortunately held steadfast with the shrine (exactly the number required to be steadfast) and the turn later the shrine passed a break test with a -2 and rolled like 11 and 12 for the grind in the 2 rounds of combat destroying my dancers and letting his general countercharge my prince that failed his fear test (bsb just died) and didn't manage to kill the dragon (already had 2 wound from pathfinders), a unit of wretched ones destroyed all my scoring units that i placed in a corner (no idea on how to deal with that) and the other unit i combo charged with kestrels on the flanks but he rolled very hig again with the grind and dealt heavy damage, one unit got out alive to charge the shrine on the second round of combat but the shrine survived with a couple of wounds.
Not much i would have done differently except maybe scattering the scoring units and reading the list better

Game 3 against VC
This i marked as yellow with some big variance because of fear everywhere, my kestrels, my prince and even my heath riders can reasonably kill a full hp shrieking horror on the charge if they don't fail their fear test so there would have been a lot of work on the flanks

Map 7, Encircle, Secure Target
I won 20-0 because of a couple of lucky moments, without those it would have probably been only a small win.
Basically i set up pretty much in the center with kestrels, maidens and heath riders on the flanks, on the left flank i had pretty much free reign cause there was only a unit of vamp knights and a shrieking horror toward the center and i had maidens, kestels and pathfinders.
We worked a bit on the flanks with me destroying the vamp knights, his horror damaging my kestrels and the dogs chaffing my heath riders, then a cast of swarm of insect not dispelled by 1 (he used 4 dice instead of the full 6) inflicted 6 wounds on a shrieking horror and that basically won me the right flank (tbh the turn before i failed to cast it with 3 dice and the turn later i casted it without causing damage), then he gave a charge with my kestrels on his master necromancer bunker that i took and managed to kill him in 2 rounds of combat, my prince got 3 wounds from a snipe (the d3 wounds one) and charged a 5 wounds shrieking horror to do something useful before dying and managed to kill it, then the vampire count charged the surviving prince with breath of corruption casted on him (i didn't dispell cause my prince would die anyway) and then surprise surprise my prince did two wound and took none thus killing the count and leaving his army without a master in turn 3, then he surrendered, i think that the charge with the count wasn't a very good move even if the kill was nearly assured because my prince cound easily do 1-2 wounds before dying and then i had pathfinders, sylvan archers and maidens in range to try to shoot him down (at this point he only had 1 arise since the necro was dead).
In this matchup having the maidens with master of heart were really beneficial because i could always force trough a missile per round, which was crucial with the horrors around.

Game 4 against DE
The matchup was reddder than red but i asked to be thrown to the wolves because that would have granted good matchups to my teammate and in a elf vs elf there's always a chance to turn the match around.

Map 13, Marcing Columns, Breaktrough
i lost 0-20 but the match was closer than the point suggests, i started pretty well keeping the black cloacks in check and casting chilling howl on the mage and auxiliaries, the disaster happened when i had to double flee with my kestrel (they exposed to kill 10 black cloacks) and by doing that i caused a panic on my 28 man forest guard unit that failed it and fled from the nearest unit that was a single black cloack fleeing, that made the flee trough the impassable in my deployement zone straight to the board edge, that caused a panic check on my druid that did the same end, at this point i was still in play though because that move exposed the flank of his dread prince to my prince, i charged but in 2 rounds of combat i failed to do any wound and he did 4 thus sealing my doom, i managed to destroy the big unit of legionnaires with altar, bsb and assassin with my blade dancers and forest guards (mybsb moved away cause he was debuffing the unit because of the ring of the obsidian thrones on his legate) but without my druid to buff them it was mutually assured destruction and the altar, the bsb and the assasin got out alive, i could still negate the objective to him but my heath riders failed a panic check that negated them possibility to escape from his prince and my bsb got shot down by the two assassins.

Game 5 against SA
Marked this as green since i didn't see anything too dangerous and a lot of thigs that i can confortably kill
Map 10, Frontline Clash, Spoils of War
I won 20-0, basically my opponent gave me a combo charge with prince and kestrels on his taurosaur and the overrun of the kestrels put them outside line of sight of anyone, then in turn 2 i had a charge with prince on a 4 wounds carnosaur that i took and a charge with blade dancers on the saurian warriors, with the right buffs i wiped the floor with everyone and the counter charge on the flank from the temple guards was met with a double flank charge with kestrels and at the end only the prince died from the carno but the forest guards did the remaining two wounds needed to kill him.
On the other flank, heath riders, briar maidens, forest guards and pathfinder deleted weapon beasts, caiman and pterodactil fliers.
A green matchup combined with some luck and a couple of mistake from the opponent basically played itself.


Speaking about my list :
Prince on eagle : he has a super unstable performance and dies a lot but not before doing his wounds, the only time he really dropped the ball was against DE but dices are cruel sometimes, also his zoning potential is always there and i need those Str 7 Ap3 attacks, the alternative would be a shapeshifter which has 1 more attack and is immune to fear but for now i'm fine with him.
Druid on eagle : does his job, it only died once because of the unlucky panic and another time because a wrong positioning, i can't fanthom why would i ever put him in a bunker when the eagle does so much for 40 points, shamanism keeps rocking, i kinda need the dancer in combat or a good target for chilling owl to make the most of the magic phase but that is usually not a problem
Bladedancer Bsb : a true glass cannon, either the opposition is wiped or he dies horribly, i need to use better the fact that he is light troops to bring the rerolls where they are needed, a bit too rps for me but i need a bsb.

Core in general : they are really there to score, rarely doing some wounds here and there and bring ranks (this usually translate in bleeding res), they do ok on their own when needed to secure a weak flank but i'm pretty much unimpressed with their performance, i suppose that any shot on them is not on the good units so there's that
28 Forest guards : the only game where they could shine they failed their panic test and ran out of the board, they can really hold 1 or 2 rounds against a decent unit and god forbid is something has fear,
15 Forest guards with sylvan blades : for their cost they are pretty good, they usually manage to kill the other scoring units they fight with on the weak flanks
10 Sylvan archers : they are pretty free to move since there are many other targets, so sometimes they get in short range and do some damage, other than that they sometimes manage to put a wound on something big and they earn their pay, sometimes they score, i'm not totally conviced on them but they consistently do something useful so they stay.
10 heath riders : they project a pretty good threath, but they are also need some skill to be used well, most of the time they don't really do anything but the opponent needs to use some resources to avoid them and that's good i guess, they have the benefit of the doubt since i don't know how to use them well

Blade dancers : my salvation, they are pretty much able to take head on every kind of infantry and their presence is enough to change lots of plans, between 14 mans and MR3 they consistently get into combat to bring the pain, they suffer disproportionately from grind attacks and the like but hey we can't get everything.
Kestrels : just their presence in my list warps the entire deployement plans of my opponent which cannot allow them to get in the back, so i enjoy having a lot of agency in the deployement, they hit hard, can hunt any stray mage, on the flanks are a real pain and they combo charge very well with the prince, i need to learn to move them better considering potentials flee moves but that's it

Briar Maides : what's not to love ? they can reliably deal with everything that's usually on the flanks, they don't die and they give me a couple additional spells and a channel
Pathfinders : they performed pretty well and i didn't expected that, they reliably put wounds where is needed and keeps cowboy honest, i was considering two units of 5 for the benefit in price and targeting but i'm not sure, there aren't still many situations where they are better than sentinels but i really need something to keep in check cowboys while on monsters i'm well covered
