Marcos turned the key and the lock opened with a distinct nostalgic click. The doors squealed on their hinges as stale air filled the innkeeper's lungs. It has been years since he stepped foot in the fabled establishment. The utter economic ruin of the neighbourhood following the race cart riots forced him to relocate his business but now it was time to return.

As he set his employees to clear out the trash a peculiar scrap of paper drew his attention. The sharp and wobbly letters indicated it was written in a rush.

RATED SUB-ROSA – FOR GENERAL STAFF

    948 AS, Damos 27th

The prevailing situation in Avranne is one of severe battle damage. The forces of the Republic of Dathen have inflicted thorough destruction and the town has suffered an exodus of refugees into the surrounding hills, straining the local infrastructure. Edmond Leguen, the Earl of Avranne, has accepted the offer of imperial aid. I believe this is in part to hasten a response from the Equitan court. The Earl has fallen out of favour with the privy council (Local Source). We judge that his cooperation with Aschau is an attempt to leverage the crown’s paranoia about imperial motives in the region. It is likely the Earl hopes to gain more assistance by forcing the crown to expedite aid in order to save face. We advise maintaining this approach.

The raid employed typical Daeb tactics. Eyewitnesses reported a sudden, impenetrable fog from the sea, within which floating masses emerged, approximately the size of houses.

It is likely the elves reconnoitred the city; they displayed uncanny knowledge of the guard’s routines, the city’s pattern of life and the timing of local tides.

The raid was heralded by forward elements of probable Black Cloaks. It is highly likely these agents were masquerading as merchants in the weeks preceding the raid in order to gather intelligence. Unfamiliar persons claiming to be Arandai (Local Source) were sighted in the city - however, my contacts among the Highborn merchant fleet claim no knowledge of any individuals fitting their description or their vessel (Reliable source).

No wonder it was so hard to read. Someone had made a copy of an inquisitorial report from more than a decade ago and Marcos was sure the means through which it had reached his establishment must have been illicit.

That was a hell of a summer in 948. The Dread Elves were on a warpath that year and it was good for business as adventurers and mercenaries gathered in the city to offer their services to many a frightened merchant. Gently fingering his coin purse with an avaricious grin Marcos thought it might not be that bad if it would happen again and help him revive his business in Avras.

The flames gently danced in the fireplace to the sound of crackling embers washing the faces of the gathered in a warm soothing glow. It was already the witching hour but the last few patrons still refused to leave. Iannis knew he would be getting an earful from Marcos come morning. Yet he could not tear himself away from the tale spun by the elderly adventurer closest to the fire. The grizzled veteran was allegedly an inquisitorial informant fourteen years ago and charged with obtaining one of the illicit documents circulating through the city's underbelly. The tome in question was apparently a translation of an elven book from beyond the great ocean detailing the land and the lives of those dreaded reavers. For all the terror they instil in the hearts of men from what he heard Iannis could not stop himself imagining people rather than monsters. Strange in their own way but also not that different from the colourful company he served this night.

Finally, we aim that the supplement to be created after the SA one will be released alongside the design guidelines of the next LAB.

Sebastianus descended down the stone staircase into the inn’s dark basement, as rats scampered away from the light cast by his lantern. After all these years, he was surprised how large the inn’s cellar was – no less than a dozen rooms suitable for lodging patrons. Once the cobwebs were cleaned out and the vermin exterminated, he was sure gold, wine and song would once again flow freely through the establishment.

It seemed some accommodations had been abandoned in a hurry following the riots and Lord Fontaine’s repression. In one room, he even found a journal that appeared to have belonged to a Sonnstahler agent within Avras. The fellow must have been chased out of Avras by Fontaine’s men, or have ended up on the gallows, to have abandoned his belongings so suddenly. With a frown, he began to read the latest entry.

Threat assessment – Otto Unterberger, agent of His Imperial Majesty’s intelligence service. Confidential. To be delivered with all haste to lord-chancellor Carl-Gustaf Reihart.

In recent years, there has been a sharp increase in sightings of vermin within Sunna’s holy empire. Their legions have been congregating in large numbers around the ruins of old Avrasi forts on our southern border. Armed conflicts have been minimal thus far. All imperial patrols have been advised to alert their state capital and await reinforcements before facing the ratmen in open combat, as they are often too numerous to engage. Their motives remain a mystery – the ruins are often vacated by the time sufficient regiments and artillery can be mustered. Either their characteristic cowardice in the face of imperial steel is not exaggerated, or they have some other design unknown to us.

The break-in the at the Imperial history museum is confirmed to have been the work of the ratmen. It appears the clandestine agents of House Sicarra were attempting to steal various historical artefacts from the ancient Avrasi exhibition and enchanted items from the museum vaults. They were discovered and repulsed by the Aschau city watch, who suffered considerable casualties before routing the thieves. A large number of artefacts are believed to be missing.

Cataloguing is still ongoing to assess the scope of the theft, but it seems the vermin mostly stole seemingly useless historical trinkets, as reiters that have set off in pursuit have managed to recover some objects. Sunna only knows why they’d bother to risk their lives for curiosities of Avrasi history.

The pursuit of these thieves and darker tales have brought me here, to Avras. Rumours abound that the city has become a hotbed for vermin activity under Fontaine’s rule. We must investigate the extent of their presence in and below the city, and assess if they have the strength to threaten Avras or the Empire once more. If the ratmen plot a return to the dark days before Sunna, we must be ready.

Sebastianus closed the journal with a frown. It made for grim reading indeed, considering the entry was dated a couple of years ago and the situation had not improved since then. Night-time sightings of ratmen in the city were no longer unheard of if drunks and gossips were to be believed. And the sewer rats had grown fat and bold, as the infestation of the inn’s basement proved.

Rummaging through the Sonnstahler’s satchel, he also discovered a pair of fine pistols of imperial make. His job was to begin cleaning the basement, catalogue its inventory and exterminate the common vermin he found there. With the pistols in hand, he opted to start with the latter task. Taking aim, he dispatched the first of many rats, sending the rest scurrying for cover. That was the problem with vermin – for everyone you saw, there were a dozen more hiding in the shadows.
