How was it done so far?
In the past years, we have done balance updates to all armybooks following more or less the same formula. We collect data on the usage of each entry in a book, and we construct a tier list based on the armies' average performance at tournaments. Based on these two data sets, we adjust prices. Roughly speaking, over-used entries become more expensive and under-used entries cheaper, and the thresholds for what is considered over- and under-used depends on the tier ranking of the book.
In addition to this, we have surveyed the community for things to give extra attention to.

We have always self-limited the extent of the changes, in order to facilitate their appropriation by the players - including their opponents.

Hence, changes were primarily focused on what affects army construction, such as points, duplication limits, unit sizes, categories, and so on. Changes affecting how an entry works in-game, on the battlefield, were not considered (except in extraordinary circumstances). This is the so-called "rules freeze".


What's new?
What is special about the upcoming balance patch at the end of this year is that we will break this rules freeze, for armybooks and the arcane compendium - only the rule book will remain frozen. This will have a rather substantial impact on the way the balance patch is done.

The reason is that some units appear not to be fixable with mere point changes, as we found out and many in the community have told us repeatedly.

This year, we aim to get rid of these annoying imperfections, which tend to reduce the gaming experience and the fun.


Let's do it the T9A way, with you, the community!
The community will be asked to raise a couple of concerns as usual, but this year, these concerns will not be limited to price changes. You will also indicate entries in need of redesign. This won't be limited to your own armies, you will have a chance to indicate what frustrates you in your opponent's armies too. Finally, the rules team will also select their own redesign needs.

Overall, a majority of the redesign needs should come from the community.


Keep it simple!
We will also focus on complex rules in complex books. The game's overall complexity has steadily grown for a couple of years now, and we will take this unfreeze as an opportunity to make some rules a bit simpler.
With all this workload already on our shoulders, there will be fewer than normal price changes, and they will be more focused on the most problematic entries.


Make a better future.
After this balance patch, we will evaluate with the community how successful it was, and if it is something we should implement more often, or if we should return to how we have done balance patches in the past.
