    SmithF - - General Discussion

    Post

Quote from Cam: “ID are basically elves with their magic and monsters and such. ” That's the worst form of insult for any dwarf...so quite appropriate!

  • Quote from Merinus: “Do you have a kind of guideline for when to go first in the game or second? Like whenever you see VC, UD or VS you prefer to go second or sth like that? ” That's a great question! It is complicated, but here are some rules of thumb that I use: I try to assess whether my opponent having the first turn is something that will grant him a significant advantage. That would include magic/gunlines that have also denied you any good cover in deployment, fast lists that will be able …

  • So... is this thread dead, or is it just resting? I have the impression that being a pinned thread might not be doing this justice, as it tends to get lost among the other General discussion banter (are we getting a dedicated general Tactics subforum anytime soon? :D). I thought I'd re-launch this, hopefully there are some souls out there who have burning tactical questions to ask! I've been asked to do a piece in the next 9th scroll, and was hoping that some difficult situations from your games…

Were the Raptors ever particularly bad? I think that they are one of the best heavy cavalry out there, for a variety of reasons: - While they have a low number of rider attacks, the killer instincts, high weaponskill and lightning reflexes make these attacks highly reliable. - They have a better grinding potential than most other cavalry unit due to having R4, 2+ save and 3 attacks s4 per model. - They are immune to psychology when in combat, making them reliable against fear/terror causers Add …

  • Quote from BondageGoatZombie: “DE dragon looses against kraken, why would you take a ridden monster when you can get a better one without rider. (Although non-flying) I know @SmithF uses both. Care to share your opinion on the DE dragon and its role vs HE dragon? ” Sorry for the late reply. The original reason I started playing the dragon was because I wanted to use my dragon model in games. That said, after having played extensively with it lately, I have to say that dragons are very unique for…

Good points, everyone! Quote from Herminard: “Thats not a fair metric, you spicy souvlaki. The army also needs to be playable by people that cannot casually trick foxes out of their lair with the help of a trombone. ” Fair enough! That said, my comment was mainly aimed at external experts and task team members: if you had asked me 3 months ago what I thought about the power level of DE and units in need of help/buffs, my opinion would have been totally different than the one I have now. One of t…

I know that I might be alone in this, but here goes: I've been testing Medusas and the Beastmaster's Lash extensively for the past months. I found both to be very decently priced for what they do. I find it weird that a list that has allowed me to get top 5 finishes in two consecutive tournaments with very good opposition suddenly becomes around 100 points cheaper. I'm not complaining, really. But it says a lot about the process, and how hit-or-miss it can be. What I find more difficult is justi…

Targets against which S7 AP4 makes a difference, off the top of my head: - All dragons - Steam Tank and Infernal Engine - Sphinxes and Great Green Idol - Tusker Cavalry - Any T5+ monster - Any 1+ rerollable character and so on. S7 Ap4 helps push the Kingsguard from "ok" to "Can Opener" territory. Same with other dwarven elite. Charging with Dwarves takes some planning ahead, but when you manage it the reward is significant.

Quote from Cam: “The problem with great weapons is it’s expensive per model to field them, therefore you can’t take lots of bodies and a lot of times where you’re not hitting back with enough to win combat. I was running 27 kings guard with banner of shielding to get as many in as possible but they either done absolutely nothing as they died too quickly or Jesus were they good (especially on a hated unit). If you got them into S4 or S3 opponents they had more than enough to hit back with, with S…

You're right, only one unit can get vanguard. I can't believe I missed that! Still, the idea stands, although it will be considerably slower now. Regarding your list, too many command options I'd say. Dropping some of them would get you at least 3 more units. Who needs quality when you can have quantity of Off/Def 5 S6 R4 dwarves?

On a side note, I've been toying with this idea for a ranks and flanks DH army. Runic standard of the Anvil plays a big part in it, allowing the slower support elements to catch up with the vanguarding core. Something like: King w/ Rune of Smashing, 2x Rune of Iron, Shield Thane BSB, Shieldbearers, shield 2x 25 Dwarf Warriors, Shields, Vanguard, Full Command, Banner of the Anvil 15 Greybeards, Vanguard Great Weapons, Standard, Musician, Banner of Dismay 2 x 3 Hold Guardians, Standard, Runic Bann…

Quote from Squigkikka: “We didn't give them a makeover out of the blue- they were one of (if not The) most unpopular units in the book, and are about as popular now as they were back then (that is, counting after removal of the Master Engineer). ” I was as vocal about it then as I am now. Aside from my personal preference, I'd see them in other lists before. Ever since the change, the only player who has used them seems to be @grungimusic, and even he eventually dropped them from his list. The o…

Since Forge Wardens were mentioned, I'll take this opportunity to state that their previous design was perfectly usable whereas the current one not so much. The problem of this project is unfortunately that we don't give enough time to the players to figure out the combos apart from the obvious ones. Yes, the Forge Wardens had the same shooting output of an Organ Gun, and yes they can accomplish the same roles. But they were also scoring, Fireborn, and could act as a very decent flanker. Their S…

  • Quote from Pellegrim: “@SmithF After I removed the - perfectly suitable - discussion on transparency and funds (you asked for a discussion in the OP) I gave you some time to see if you'd remove the claim above; since you didn't, I will react on it. Never have I, no will I ever accuse people of using donated money for their own good unless I see someone stealing money in front of my own eyes. Let that be perfectly clear ” @Pellegrim I never asked you to remove anything, I just asked you to not us…

Thanks for the comments, guys! @Nanatoo you're right about the horns, I'll give it a try and report back! I'm preparing the army for a big team tournament that we'll have during the last weekend of November, so the paintjobs are as rushed as can be without ruining the models: I'll surely go back and correct details afterwards. Last night I was able to assemble and paint my third medusa, this one from Avatars of War. the-ninth-age.com/gallery/inde…a5c51f060a7f02376fef4c114 the-ninth-age.com/galle…

  • Congratulations @Pellegrim, you took a thread that I started with a positive outlook and trying to incite people to contribute, and crapped all over it to prove a point. You insinuated in this process that people who spend more than 20h per week to bring you that game that you play for free are doing this so as to put in their pocket a tiny amount of money in the grander scheme of things. I agree that -since the project is community supported- the finances should be transparent. But this wasn't …
